The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training, commonly known as DET, is the full professional teaching qualification for anyone working or planning to work in the Further Education and Skills sector, including colleges, training providers, adult education, and the wider skills sector.

This Level 5 qualification is awarded by NCFE and quality-assured by Ofqual, requiring 120 credits in total: a minimum of 75 credits from mandatory units covering teaching, learning and assessment theory, and at least 45 credits from optional units that let you specialise in your subject area or a particular teaching context.

What you'll need

Entry requirements

You should already hold, or be working towards, a Level 3 Award in Education and Training or equivalent introductory teaching qualification, though this is not always mandatory depending on your experience.

You will need access to a minimum of 100 hours of teaching practice in a real classroom, training room or workshop setting, which can be through existing employment or a placement arranged with support from your provider.

GCSE English and Maths at grade 4 or above, or equivalent Functional Skills qualifications, are usually expected.

Assessment

How you're assessed

Assessment is through written assignments, a teaching practice portfolio, and observed teaching sessions assessed by a qualified observer. There are no written exams.

You must achieve a minimum of 120 credits, including at least 61 credits at Level 5, with a minimum of 75 credits from mandatory units and 45 from optional units.
