Tuition vs exam fees
When you home educate, you pay for teaching and for the exam, and the two are easy to confuse. At Lift College, the Study option covers teaching, practice and tutor support each month; your child learns the specification, but you book and pay for the exam seat yourself at a centre of your choice. The +Exams option includes the exam entry and centre fee in the monthly price, so one payment covers teaching and the exam series. Lift College enters your child and books the seat at one of ten Tutors & Exams centres in England.
If you book the exam yourself on Study, the centre charges its published private-candidate fee per subject for the whole series. That fee is paid to the centre, separate from tuition. Exam centre fees are set by each centre and published on its website, and there is no state funding for exam fees in England. Awarding bodies such as AQA publish the entry fees they charge centres, which are not the same as a private candidate's price. For more detail, see our guide to GCSE exam fees. The table below shows the monthly tuition price for each option and the standard Tutors & Exams 2026/27 private-candidate fee if you book yourself on Study. Standard fees apply before the first entry deadline (7 February 2027 for summer 2027 GCSE and A Level entries); late entries cost more.

There is no state funding for exam fees in England; parents who home educate bear the cost, and any help is at each council's discretion. Some councils in Wales reimburse fees. Exam centre fees are set by the centre and published on its website.
