UCAS Points Calculator

Estimate points for A levels, AS levels, selected Pearson BTEC National qualifications and the EPQ. Values are checked against the UCAS Tariff Tables 2027. A total does not guarantee university eligibility.

  • Selected qualifications, with a clear points breakdown
  • Checked against UCAS 2027 tables, on 9 September 2026
  • A planning estimate, not an admissions decision

How UCAS Tariff points work

UCAS Tariff points turn eligible Level 3 grades into one comparable number. An A* at A-level is worth 56 points, an A 48, a B 40, a C 32, a D 24 and an E 16, so AAA totals 144. Selected BTEC National Extended Diploma grades run from PPP (48) to D*D*D* (168). Use the calculator for planning, then check each course's published entry requirements and the official UCAS Tariff.

How to use this calculator

Three steps, no sign-up, no email needed.

01

Add your qualifications

Pick A level, BTEC, EPQ or AS grades from the dropdowns. Leave unused fields blank and avoid double-counting overlapping awards.

02

See your total instantly

Read the points breakdown for your selected grades. The running total updates as you change each dropdown.

03

Check the course requirements

Compare your exact qualifications, subjects and grades with the university's published entry requirements. A total is not a university-entry band or an offer guarantee.

Enter only the qualifications you want to include, leaving unused fields blank. Do not count an AS and A level in the same subject or a smaller BTEC award contained within a larger one. Check which qualifications your chosen course accepts.

A Levels

Enter up to three separate A level subjects. Check whether your university limits which subjects or results count.

AS Level

Do not add an AS level to an A level in the same subject. Use the exact AS grade below, not a fraction of an A level’s points.

BTEC National Extended Diploma

Pearson Level 3 National Extended Diploma, first teaching September 2016 (1,080 GLH). Check the exact qualification title and grade.

BTEC National Diploma

Pearson Level 3 National Diploma, first teaching September 2016 (720 GLH). Do not add an award contained within a larger qualification.

Extended Project (EPQ)

Include only if your chosen course accepts the EPQ towards its offer. It does not replace a required subject or grade.

Access to HE Diploma

Enter 45 graded Level 3 credits in total, in multiples of 3. Exclude ungraded credits. Leave all three fields blank or zero to omit this qualification.

0Estimated UCAS Tariff points

Planning estimate only

This is an arithmetic estimate only, not an offer or a guarantee of acceptance.

Universities and colleges decide which qualifications, subjects and grades they accept and count. Check the exact course requirements for your entry year, including any required Access credit profile; a points total does not replace these conditions.

Do not double count overlapping content. For an AS and A level in the same subject, count only the A level; for nested BTEC awards, count only the highest award. Subjects and overlap are not captured here, so distinct subjects are not automatically deduplicated.

Frequently asked questions

What are UCAS Tariff points?
UCAS Tariff points attach numerical values to eligible qualifications and grades. Check the exact qualification in the official UCAS Tariff tables and read the university's course entry requirements; a points total is not a guarantee of admission.
How many UCAS points is an A* at A level?
An A* at A Level is worth 56 UCAS Tariff points. Three A* grades give 168 points under the UCAS Tariff tables.
What grades are 168 UCAS points?
Three A Levels at A*A*A* give 168 UCAS Tariff points (56 each). A Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma at D*D*D* also gives 168 points. Matching the total does not make the qualifications interchangeable for every university course.
How many UCAS points is a full A at A level?
An A at A Level is worth 48 UCAS Tariff points, so three A grades give 144 points. Check the university's individual subject and grade requirements rather than assuming that one points total applies to a group of universities.
How many UCAS points is a BTEC Extended Diploma?
For a Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma, D*D*D* gives 168 UCAS Tariff points, DDD 144, DDM 128, MMM 96 and PPP 48. Check the exact qualification title and size; these figures should not be applied to every qualification with BTEC in its name.
How many UCAS points is the EPQ worth?
Check the grade for your Extended Project Qualification in the official UCAS Tariff tables. Whether an EPQ contributes to an offer or an alternative entry route depends on the university and course; read their published requirements.
Do EPQ points count towards a university offer?
Check the individual university course requirements to see whether an EPQ counts towards its offer. Do not assume that extra points replace a required A-Level subject or grade.
Are UCAS Tariff points the same as university entry requirements?
No. Many universities set subject-specific or grade-specific conditions alongside an overall tariff (for example, requiring an A in Biology, or a minimum of BBB). Reaching a tariff total on paper does not guarantee an offer if the course specifies particular subjects or minimum grades. Always check the course page before applying.
How many UCAS points do you need for university?
There is no single UCAS points requirement for university. Look up your chosen course and entry year, including any required subjects, grades and additional conditions. Ask admissions if the offer wording is unclear.
Do GCSEs give you UCAS Tariff points?
No. GCSEs and other Level 2 qualifications do not contribute UCAS Tariff points. The Tariff covers eligible Level 3 and SCQF Level 6 qualifications. Universities may still require particular GCSE subjects and grades, which must be checked separately.
How many UCAS points is an AS level?
An AS gives 20 points at A, 16 at B, 12 at C, 10 at D and 6 at E. Do not count both an AS and a full A level in the same subject. Check your exact qualification and the university's requirements.
Which UK universities use the UCAS Tariff for entry offers?
Check the entry requirements for each university course rather than relying on a general list. If both grades and a points total are shown, confirm whether they are alternative routes or whether additional subject and grade conditions also apply.
How do I calculate my UCAS points?
Look up each exact qualification and grade, then add the eligible values. Do not double count overlapping qualifications. This calculator covers selected A level, AS, BTEC and EPQ routes; use the official UCAS calculator for other qualifications.
How many UCAS points is a Merit?
A Merit does not have one universal UCAS Tariff value. For example, MMM in a Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma gives 96 points. Check the exact qualification title, size and grade profile before applying that figure to your own result.
What grades are 120 UCAS points?
Three A Levels at grades BBB give 120 UCAS Tariff points (40 + 40 + 40). For a Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma, DDM gives 128 points, not 120. Check the exact qualification title and grade profile in the UCAS calculator, and read the university's subject and grade requirements as well as its points offer.
