How to become a paramedic in the UK
Registered paramedics in the UK are regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and typically enter the profession via an approved BSc in Paramedic Science. Newly qualified NHS paramedics join Agenda for Change Band 5, earning £32,073 to £39,043 in England in 2026/27, and progress to Band 6 with specialist practice.
What a paramedic does
Paramedics are autonomous clinical practitioners who deliver emergency, urgent and primary care. They work across NHS ambulance services, GP practices, urgent care centres, hospital emergency departments and specialist critical care teams, responding to 999 and 111 calls and managing patients on scene, in transit and in place.
- Assess and triage patients at scene.
- Deliver advanced life support, trauma care and pain management.
- Make decisions about hospital conveyance versus community management.
- Provide primary care in GP and urgent care settings as a specialist or advanced paramedic.
Registration and regulator
Every practising paramedic in the UK must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Registration requires completion of an HCPC-approved paramedic programme and evidence of good health and character. Paramedics renew their registration every two years and must meet HCPC standards for continuing professional development.

Salary
Most newly qualified NHS paramedics in England start on Agenda for Change Band 5, which pays £32,073 to £39,043 in 2026/27. After two years in service, paramedics progress to Band 6 (£39,959 to £48,117), with specialist, advanced and consultant paramedic roles at Band 7 and above. High Cost Area Supplements add up to around £8,750 in Inner London.
Entry routes
There are three main routes into paramedic practice in the UK:
- School leaver: A levels including a science into an HCPC-approved BSc (Hons) in Paramedic Science.
- Adult learner: An Access to HE Diploma (Paramedic Science) — a Level 3 QAA-regulated diploma, widely accepted as an alternative to A levels.
- Paramedic degree apprenticeship: Employer-funded route combining paid work with an HCPC-approved paramedic degree, typically delivered by an NHS ambulance trust.
Access to HE — the adult route in
The Access to HE Diploma (Paramedic Science) is a Level 3 qualification designed for adults returning to education without A levels. It is accepted by UK paramedic science programmes as an entry qualification and can be studied online. Successful completion is typically enough to meet the academic entry requirement for an HCPC-approved BSc (Hons) in Paramedic Science.
