An AS-level is a standalone qualification worth 40% of a full A-level. If you complete the full A-level in the same subject, only the A-level points count. They do not stack.

The EPQ is worth half an A-level and does stack with your A-level points, which is why many adult learners add one to strengthen a university application.

Worked examples

Universities publish offers in grades or points. A points-based offer (for example "112 points from 3 A-levels") gives you flexibility in how you reach it.

  • Three A-levels, ABB: 48 + 40 + 40 = 128 points
  • Three A-levels, AAA: 48 + 48 + 48 = 144 points
  • Two A-levels plus EPQ, BB + A: 40 + 40 + 24 = 104 points
  • Retaking one A-level from C to A: adds 16 points (32 to 48)
