Studying A Level Biology online as an adult

Yes. Adults of any age can study AQA 7402 online with Lift College and sit the same papers as school candidates (three 2-hour papers of 91, 91 and 78 marks, weighted 35/35/30), as a private candidate at a Tutors & Exams centre. The course is open to anyone aged 14 or over (under 18s enrol with a parent or guardian's permission and support) and there are no formal entry qualifications. The recommended starting point is GCSE Biology or Combined Science at grade 6 or above and GCSE Mathematics at grade 5 or above, because at least 10% of the marks test maths skills; this is recommended, not required. A Levels are examined once a year, in the May/June series, and all papers are sat in the same series. The practical endorsement is assessed at a Tutors & Exams laboratory venue against the Common Practical Assessment Criteria and reported separately as a Pass on your certificate. It sits alongside the written A Level and is included on +Exams & CPAC; on Study or +Exams you take the written papers only. Most learners spend 8 to 12 hours a week and finish in 12 to 18 months, or faster if they study more each week. On +Exams we enter you before AQA's deadline and book your seat at one of ten Tutors & Exams centres in England; exam entry is only on +Exams. Our guide to A Level private exam centres explains the process, and can you do A Levels online? covers how online study and in-person exams fit together.

Who this is for

This course is for you if

  • You want the A Level for medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, nursing, midwifery, biomedical or sports science, or a degree apprenticeship that asks for it.
  • You are resitting or returning to study and want the same A Level, from the same awarding body, that is sat in UK schools and colleges, with UCAS points on results day.
  • You have GCSE Biology or Combined Science and want to go deeper, with the option of the practical endorsement universities look for.
  • You are an adult returning to study who wants a recognised A Level at your own pace, with a tutor who marks your work and a clear route to the exam.
What you will need

Entry requirements

  • Open to anyone aged 14 or over. Under 18s enrol with a parent or guardian's permission and support. There are no formal entry qualifications.
  • Recommended starting point: GCSE Biology or Combined Science at grade 6 or above and GCSE Mathematics at grade 5 or above, because at least 10% of the marks test maths skills. This is recommended, not required, and the first unit revises the key ideas.
  • A computer, tablet or phone with internet access, a scientific calculator (allowed in all three papers), a ruler and a pencil.
  • The ability to attend a Tutors & Exams centre in England for your written papers and a school laboratory for the practical endorsement.

There is no minimum study time. Most learners spend 8 to 12 hours a week and finish in 12 to 18 months, or faster if you study more each week. Assignments are for feedback and do not count towards your grade.

The 12 required practicals

The practical endorsement is assessed at a Tutors & Exams laboratory venue against the Common Practical Assessment Criteria and reported separately as a Pass on your certificate. It sits alongside the written A Level and is included on +Exams & CPAC.

  1. Investigation into the effect of a named variable on the rate of an enzyme-controlled reaction
  2. Preparation of stained squashes of cells from plant root tips, use of an optical microscope to identify the stages of mitosis and calculation of a mitotic index
  3. Production of a dilution series of a solute to produce a calibration curve with which to identify the water potential of plant tissue
  4. Investigation into the effect of a named variable on the permeability of cell-surface membranes
  5. Dissection of an animal or plant gas exchange or mass transport system, or of an organ within such a system
  6. Use of aseptic techniques to investigate the effect of antimicrobial substances on microbial growth
  7. Use of chromatography to investigate the pigments isolated from leaves of different plants
  8. Investigation into the effect of a named factor on the rate of dehydrogenase activity in extracts of chloroplasts
  9. Investigation into the effect of a named variable on the rate of respiration of cultures of single-celled organisms
  10. Investigation into the effect of an environmental variable on the movement of an animal using either a choice chamber or a maze
  11. Production of a dilution series of a glucose solution and use of colorimetric techniques to produce a calibration curve with which to identify the concentration of glucose in an unknown sample
  12. Investigation into the effect of a named environmental factor on the distribution of a given species
Step 1Learn the required practicals as you go

Each of the 12 required practicals is taught with a video demonstration, a method sheet and real data, then examined through marked questions in the style of the papers.

Step 2Add the practical endorsement if you need it

Universities usually ask for a CPAC Pass for science degrees. On +Exams & CPAC the endorsement is assessed at a Tutors & Exams laboratory venue; the written papers stand alone on +Exams.

Step 3Sit all three papers in one series

On +Exams your entry and your seat at a Tutors & Exams centre are booked for you and the fees are included.

Assessment

How is A Level Biology assessed?

A Level Biology is assessed through three written examination papers. Paper 1 and Paper 2 each contribute 35% of your final grade. Paper 3 contributes 30%. A separate practical endorsement is available. There is no coursework. All exams are taken in person at an approved centre.

Three written papers of 2 hours, all sat in the same May/June series. Paper 1 (91 marks, 35%) covers topics 1 to 4 and relevant practical skills, with short and long answer questions plus a 15 mark extended response. Paper 2 (91 marks, 35%) covers topics 5 to 8 and relevant practical skills, with a 15 mark comprehension question. Paper 3 (78 marks, 30%) covers any content from topics 1 to 8: structured questions on practical techniques (38 marks), critical analysis of experimental data (15 marks), and one essay chosen from two titles (25 marks). Practical endorsement (CPAC): alongside the written A Level you complete 12 required practical activities, assessed against the Common Practical Assessment Criteria and reported separately as a Pass on your certificate. On +Exams & CPAC the practical assessment takes place at a Tutors & Exams laboratory venue. At least 15% of your written marks assess practical skills. Grades run from A* to E, with U below E; the practical endorsement is reported separately.

Is A level Biology hard?

A level Biology is a Level 3 academic qualification and is at the same difficulty as the same A level taught in any UK school or sixth-form college. Most learners study around 8 to 12 hours per week and complete in 12 to 18 months.

How old do I need to be?

Open to anyone aged 14 or over. Under 18s enrol with a parent or guardian's permission and support. There are no formal entry qualifications.

How is the A level assessed?

Through three written papers sat in the May/June series at an approved exam centre. The practical endorsement (CPAC) is assessed separately at a Tutors & Exams laboratory venue on +Exams & CPAC; on Study or +Exams you take the written papers only.

What is CPAC and do I need it?

CPAC is the Common Practical Assessment Criteria, the practical endorsement that sits alongside the written A Level in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. It is reported separately on your certificate as a Pass and does not affect your grade. Universities usually ask for it on science degree courses, so check the entry requirements of the course you want. On +Exams & CPAC the endorsement is assessed at a Tutors & Exams laboratory venue and the fees are included; on Study or +Exams you take the written papers only.

When can I sit the exams?

A Levels are examined once a year, in the May/June series. All papers are sat in the same series, and any non-exam assessment is submitted in the same year. On +Exams we enter you and book your seat at a Tutors & Exams centre for the series you are ready for; on Study you can arrange your own entry as a private candidate.

Where will I sit the exams?

At one of the ten Tutors & Exams centres across England: Birmingham, Bolton, Coventry, Doncaster, High Wycombe, Mitcham, Newcastle, Romford, St Neots and Taunton. Use the centre finder on this page to see your nearest. Exams are always sat in person at an approved centre; no A Level can be sat online.

How does paying work?

You pay monthly by subscription, or annually up front at the price shown in the plan card, which saves 15% against paying monthly. Every option starts with a 7-day free trial, there is no contract and no credit agreement, and you can cancel from your account at any time. Every payment is covered by 14-day money back. On +Exams the awarding body entry fee and the Tutors & Exams centre fee are included in the price. We do not offer Advanced Learner Loans, student finance or third-party credit; the subscription is the only way to pay.

What does the Study option include?

The full course, your named UK tutor, marked practice in every unit, mock papers and AI Study Support.

What if I stop paying?

You simply stop studying. There is no contract, no credit agreement and no debt. You can cancel from your account at any time and there is 14-day money back on every payment.

Can I sit the exams as a private candidate?

Yes. Lift College learners are entered as private candidates. On +Exams we handle the entry and book your seat at a Tutors & Exams centre, and the entry and centre fees are included. On Study you can enter yourself at a centre that accepts private candidates; you are responsible for that entry, the fees and any non-exam assessment arrangements.

Are these A levels accepted by UK universities?

Yes. Our A Levels are awarded by AQA (WJEC Eduqas for Film Studies) and are identical to those taught in UK schools and colleges. UK universities assess the grade and subject on your certificate, not where you studied, and the grades earn the same UCAS points (up to 56 per A Level at A*). Check the entry requirements of the course you want.

How long does an A level take?

You typically study one A level in 12 to 18 months. Many learners take two or three A levels alongside each other across two years to apply for university the following autumn.

How much does A Level Biology cost online with the exams included?

On Lift College's +Exams plan, A Level Biology is £89.99 a month or £917.99 a year, with your AQA entry and Tutors & Exams centre fees included and your seat booked for you. +Exams & CPAC, at £119.99 a month or £1,223.99 a year, adds the CPAC practical endorsement at a Tutors & Exams laboratory venue. The Study plan is £49.99 a month or £509.99 a year; exam entry is only on +Exams.

Can I study A Level Biology online and sit the exam as a private candidate in the UK?

Yes. You study AQA 7402 online with a named UK tutor and sit the written papers in person at an approved centre as a private candidate, in the May/June series. On +Exams Lift College makes the entry and books your seat at one of ten Tutors & Exams centres in England, with the fees included; on Study you can enter yourself at a centre that accepts private candidates.
