What you'll learn

A Level Chemistry is one of the most demanding, and one of the most valuable, A Levels adults can study. It is a required subject for undergraduate medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and veterinary science, and it is central to chemistry, biochemistry, materials science, and chemical engineering degrees. Many adult learners take Chemistry online because they have decided later in life to pursue a healthcare or science career and need to add the qualification to their existing profile.

The course is awarded by AQA (specification 7405) and quality-assured by Ofqual under the national A* to E grading scale. All theory teaching, worked examples, past-paper practice, and structured tutor support is delivered entirely online, covering the full specification: physical chemistry (atomic structure, bonding, thermodynamics, kinetics, equilibria, electrochemistry), inorganic chemistry (periodicity, group 2, group 7, transition metals), and organic chemistry (alkanes through aromatics, carbonyls, amines, polymers, synthesis, and spectroscopy).

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements, but a grade 6 or above in GCSE Chemistry (or the higher tier of GCSE Combined Science) and a grade 5 or above in GCSE Maths are strongly recommended, given the mathematical and quantitative content of A Level Chemistry. There is no upper age limit.

You will need to register separately as a private candidate with a JCQ-approved UK exam centre that offers both the written papers and the AQA practical endorsement. Fewer centres offer the endorsement than the exam-only route, so confirming your centre early in your studies is important.

Assessment

How you're assessed

A Level Chemistry is assessed through three externally-examined written papers set and marked by AQA, each two hours long, plus a separately-reported practical endorsement graded Pass or Fail. All papers are sat in person at an approved exam centre at the end of your course of study. Papers 1 and 2 cover the theoretical content, and Paper 3 tests practical skills and synoptic understanding across the full specification.

The practical endorsement requires demonstration of the twelve AQA-defined required practicals under supervision at an approved centre. Not every private-candidate exam centre offers the endorsement, so early confirmation of your centre is essential. Fees for the endorsement are set by the centre and paid directly to them; the endorsement is a Pass or Fail outcome reported alongside the A* to E grade.
