Level 2 maths means a maths qualification at Level 2 on GOV.UK's list of qualification levels: usually GCSE Maths at grade 4 or above (grades 9 to 4, the old A* to C), or Functional Skills Maths Level 2. Both sit at Level 2, so when an employer, college or apprenticeship asks for "Level 2 maths", either may meet it, although some universities and courses ask for GCSE by name. Lift College teaches both online: Functional Skills Maths Level 2 from £39.99 a month with exam entry and one sitting included, and GCSE Mathematics (AQA 8300) on Study from £39.99 a month, each with a 7-day free trial.
What is Level 2 maths equivalent to?
GOV.UK's list of qualification levels for England, Wales and Northern Ireland puts "GCSE grades 9 to 4 (or A* to C)" and "level 2 functional skills" together at Level 2. One step down, Level 1 includes GCSE grades 3, 2 and 1 (D to G) and Functional Skills Level 1.
So a GCSE grade 3 in maths is a Level 1 result, and a grade 4 or above is Level 2. The Department for Education calls grade 4 a "standard pass" and grade 5 a "strong pass". Ofqual says the bottom of grade 4 is comparable to the bottom of the old grade C.
Being at the same level does not make them identical: employers, colleges, universities and apprenticeship funding rules decide which they accept. Read is Functional Skills Level 2 equivalent to GCSE?

GCSE Maths and Functional Skills Maths Level 2: the difference
Content. GCSE Maths covers the full AQA 8300 specification, and content from any part of it can be assessed on any paper. Functional Skills maths follows Department for Education subject content whose purpose is "to provide a qualification for work, study and life". Ofqual's rules give 75% of the marks to problem solving and 25% to underpinning skills, and the Level 2 content includes money and budgeting, percentages, ratio, measures, shape and data.
The exam. The three GCSE papers are 80 marks each, Paper 1 is non calculator, and all three are sat in the same series at an approved exam centre. Functional Skills Maths Level 2 with TQUK is onscreen, with remote invigilation from home or at a TQUK approved centre.

Which one do you need?
- Apprenticeships. The 2026 to 2027 funding rules accept GCSE or Functional Skills maths up to Level 2. English and maths are mandatory only for apprentices aged 16 to 18; for those aged 19 and over they are optional.
- Jobs and colleges. Employers and colleges commonly accept Functional Skills Maths Level 2 where a Level 2 in maths is asked for.
- Universities and teacher training. Some universities, degree courses and teacher training providers ask for GCSE Maths by name, so check the entry requirements before you choose.
- A Level Maths. If you plan to go on to A Level Maths, GCSE is the better preparation.
- Students aged 16 to 19. Full time students on 16 to 19 study programmes with a GCSE grade 3 are required to sit GCSE maths again instead of a Level 2 Functional Skills qualification (Ofqual, 2024).
If nothing names GCSE, Functional Skills Maths Level 2 is the shorter route. If anything you are aiming for names GCSE, take the GCSE.
