About this qualification

What you'll learn

A Level English Language is a Level 3 qualification that treats English as evidence. Instead of studying a fixed set of literary works, you look at how language actually behaves in newspapers, transcripts, adverts, digital messaging, older documents and children's speech, then explain what you find using the analytical methods set out in the specification.

The version offered here is AQA specification 7702, the AQA Advanced Level GCE in English Language, Ofqual accreditation number 601/4640/0. AQA sets the papers, marks the two written exams and moderates the non-exam assessment. The qualification is linear, so all assessments are taken at the end of the course in a single May or June series.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements. AQA confirms that specification 7702 has no previous learning requirements, and that any requirements for entry to a course based on the specification are at the discretion of the centre. You do not need to hold GCSEs to enrol.

AQA does recommend that students have the skills and knowledge associated with a GCSE English Language course or equivalent, because the papers ask for extended analytical writing under timed conditions. If you have not studied English formally for some time, a GCSE English Language course first is a sensible step, though it is not a condition of enrolment. You should be 18 or over, comfortable studying online, and able to attend an approved exam centre for the written papers.

Assessment

How you're assessed

AQA assesses 7702 through two written papers and one non-exam assessment. Paper 1, Language, the Individual and Society, lasts 2 hours 30 minutes, carries 100 marks and is worth 40 per cent of the A level. It covers textual variations and representations in Section A, and children's language development from 0 to 11 years in Section B. Paper 2, Language Diversity and Change, also lasts 2 hours 30 minutes, carries 100 marks and is worth 40 per cent, covering diversity and change in Section A and language discourses plus a directed writing task in Section B.

The third component, Language in Action, is the non-exam assessment. It carries 100 marks and is worth 20 per cent of the A level, and totals 3,500 words: a language investigation of 2,000 words excluding data, and a piece of original writing with commentary totalling 1,500 words. It is assessed by teachers and moderated by AQA. Because the qualification is linear, all assessments are taken at the end of the course, and A level exams are available every May and June for the life of the specification.
