How an HLTA course works, free or paid
There are two different things called "HLTA", and they are paid for in different ways.
HLTA status. This is a professional status, awarded by the HLTA National Assessment Partnership (HNAP) through regional assessment providers such as HLTA North and HLTA South. You are assessed against the 33 HLTA standards in your current role. The providers we read ask for your headteacher's endorsement or full support from your school, and Level 2 English and maths. The University of Chester says its candidates are assessed by an online interview with an assessor, the headteacher or a representative and another teacher, with no classroom observation. The programmes we read pair a short preparation course with the assessment.
The Level 4 HLTA certificate. This is a regulated qualification, such as the TQUK Level 4 Certificate for Higher Level Teaching Assistants (RQF), built on the same HLTA standards. You study the knowledge, then build a portfolio from your own classroom work. It is separate from HLTA status: the certificate does not award the status, and the status providers we read did not list the certificate as an entry requirement.
HLTA is not a teaching qualification. For the pay difference between TA and HLTA grades, see how much a teaching assistant earns in the UK.

Is there a free HLTA course online?
Government funding. We found none. The University of Northampton says of its HLTA status programme: "There is no Government funding", and that HLTA status is not part of the Apprenticeship Levy scheme.
School-funded. This is the real free route. The University of Chester says "Some candidates are funded, either in full or part, by their employers", while others pay for themselves. Because HLTA status needs your school's support anyway, ask your headteacher or business manager whether the school will pay for the preparation and assessment, or for a Level 4 certificate, as part of your development.
Free trial, not a free course. Some paid providers let you try before you pay. Lift College has a 7-day free trial: you pay £0 today and nothing is charged until day 8.

So what does paying add?
- HLTA status is assessed against the 33 standards in your current role, so you apply for it once you are already working at HLTA level with your school behind you.
- A Level 4 certificate adds structured study of the HLTA standards, a portfolio from your own classroom, and a regulated qualification on the Ofqual register in your name. It suits teaching assistants building towards HLTA work, or who want a regulated Level 4 qualification for its own sake.
- Paying yourself means you do not need to wait for a school budget, and the qualification goes with you if you change schools.
If your school will pay for HLTA status, take that. If you want the Level 4 qualification and your school will not fund it, a paid course is the way to get it.
What you get with Lift College
The Lift College Level 4 HLTA Certificate is the TQUK Level 4 Certificate for Higher Level Teaching Assistants (RQF), 603/1432/1: 36 credits from seven mandatory units, mapped to the 33 national HLTA standards.
- What it requires. You must be working or volunteering in a school as a teaching assistant, with at least 50 hours in a relevant role. Units 5, 6 and 7 need observation or witness testimony in class. An enhanced DBS check is normally arranged by the school.
- Pay monthly or yearly. £59.99 a month or £539.99 a year when you pay today, with your price fixed for life, or £69.99 a month after a 7-day free trial. No contract, no credit check, cancel any time, and 14-day money back on every payment.
- A named UK tutor. Work is marked in 5 to 7 working days, and you resubmit at no extra cost until every criterion is met.
- Portfolio, no exams. Typically 9 to 12 months at 6 to 10 hours a week.
- TQUK registration and certificate included.
You need to be 16 or over, with Level 2 English and maths recommended. It prepares you for HLTA status, which is assessed separately by the HLTA National Assessment Partnership's regional providers. New to school support work? Start with a Level 3 teaching assistant qualification.
Which should you choose?
- Ask your school first if you are already covering classes and leading groups: it may fund HLTA status preparation and assessment.
- Pay for a Level 4 certificate if you want a regulated qualification on the HLTA standards and your school will not fund one.
- Choose Lift College if you work or volunteer in a school, can complete at least 50 hours and be observed for units 5 to 7, and want to pay monthly with a named tutor.
