Yes, you can do a free bookkeeping course online, but free usually means the basics, or a funded place if you qualify. Lift College's Level 2 Bookkeeping Course is a paid option at £29.99 a month or £269.99 a year when you pay today, or £34.99 a month after a 7-day free trial. It is a Lift College certificate course, not a regulated qualification. Free short courses such as OpenLearn's 8 hour introduction give a statement of participation, not a qualification. In England, adults earning below £26,800 can often get a regulated AAT Level 2 course funded by a college. Paid courses we checked cost £224.25 to £719.
How a bookkeeping course works, free or paid
Bookkeeping courses come in two kinds, and the difference matters more than the price.
Regulated qualifications. The AAT Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping (qualification number 603/6343/5) is approved and regulated by Ofqual. It has two units, Introduction to Bookkeeping and Principles of Bookkeeping Controls, and two computer-based assessments of 1 hour 30 minutes each. AAT says it usually takes around three months. On top of a training provider's fee (AAT gives £150 to £900), AAT charges a £73 registration fee and £67 for each of the two assessments: £207 in total.
Non-regulated courses. Short free courses, CPD courses and certificate courses such as the Lift College Level 2 Bookkeeping Course are written and certified by the provider. They teach the same core method (double entry, VAT, the bank reconciliation, the trial balance), but they are not on the Ofqual register.
Each employer sets its own requirements. If a job advert names AAT or another regulated qualification, take that. If you want the skills to keep books, for your own business or for a first role, either kind can teach you.

Free bookkeeping course online: the options
Funded college places (Adult Skills Fund, England). The gov.uk Adult Skills Fund rules for 1 August 2026 to 31 July 2027 let colleges fully fund adults aged 19 and over who earn below £26,800 a year for qualifications up to and including level 2, and fund some unemployed learners in full. Colleges decide what they run. For example, East Sussex College Group lists an AAT Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping delivered 100% by e-learning, with a standard fee of £650 and a fee waiver if you earn less than £26,800 or are unemployed and on certain benefits, subject to a postcode check. You sit the exams at an approved AAT centre. Harlow College notes that its funding "only covers the tuition fee", so check whether AAT registration and assessment fees are extra.
Free Courses for Jobs (England, level 3). gov.uk says adults aged 19 or over who earn below £25,750, or are unemployed, can get a free level 3 qualification in subjects including accounting and finance. Government funding letters for 2026 to 2027 have been published. This is a level 3 offer, so it suits people moving on from Level 2. Use the National Careers Service course finder to see what is free near you.
Skills Bootcamps. gov.uk describes Skills Bootcamps as free courses for adults typically lasting up to 16 weeks. The Skills for Careers page we read did not list bookkeeping as a subject, so check what runs in your area.
Free short courses. OpenLearn's Introduction to bookkeeping and accounting is a free Level 1 (introductory) course of 8 hours covering the numerical skills and the rules of double entry, with a free statement of participation on completion.
Software providers' free training. QuickBooks says free onboarding sessions are offered to all newly subscribed customers and trialists. Xero runs its own learning site, including a self-paced Xero associate certification; the page we read did not show a price, so check before you start.
Employer-funded. AAT says all accounting apprenticeships are fully funded, and employers may pay AAT costs. AAT also runs a bursary for people facing financial hardship.

So what does paying add?
What a regulated Level 2 qualification adds. An AAT certificate is on the Ofqual register, and carries a qualification number employers can check. AAT says its bookkeeping qualifications can lead to its associate bookkeeping membership (AATQB), and the Level 2 leads on to Level 3. It is also the kind of course a college can fund. In return you sit two timed exams, and at some providers you pay the £207 AAT fees on top.
What a paid tutor-marked course adds. A free short course shows you the method. A full paid course makes you use it: you keep sets of books, get them marked and fix what is wrong. At Lift College a named UK tutor marks every assignment, and you finish by keeping a small business's books for a full month.
What free routes do not give. OpenLearn gives a statement of participation, not a qualification. Funded places depend on your earnings, your postcode and what your local college runs, and may not cover exam fees.
What you get with Lift College

- A named UK tutor. Every assignment is marked in 5 to 7 working days. It is pass or refer, and you resubmit at no extra cost.

- Certificate of achievement issued by Lift College, with a unique number an employer can verify. It is not a regulated qualification and has no Ofqual number.
You need to be 16 or over, with no previous experience. Only want the essentials for your own books? Bookkeeping Basics is 6 hours in 6 short modules for £19.99, pay once, with a CPD certificate issued by Lift College the day you pass.
Which should you choose?
- Take a free route if you want to try bookkeeping first (OpenLearn), if you live in England and earn below £26,800 and a local college runs a funded AAT course, or if your employer will pay.
- Pay for an AAT course if a job advert names AAT, or you want the Ofqual-regulated route to Level 3.
- Choose Lift College if you want to learn the full method from scratch with a named tutor, from home, with no exams, paying monthly while you study.
