Is CMI Level 7 worth it? What you get, what it costs and who it suits

Who CMI Level 7 suits

• Senior managers, directors and leaders, or managers moving into a strategic role. CMI says its Level 6 and 7 qualifications are for senior managers who translate organisational strategy.
• People aged 19 or over. That is CMI's minimum age for Level 7.
• People who can write at master's level in English, including critical analysis and referencing.

CMI sets no formal entry requirements. At induction Lift College talks through your goals and experience so you start on the right size.

What it involves

Lift College teaches four units: 701, 704, 702 and 705. Each unit is one written assignment on a CMI brief, marked Pass or Refer by Lift College assessors. There are no exams.

Word counts are CMI's guidelines, with a 10% allowance above or below. You have up to 5 years from CMI registration to finish.

What you get

• A regulated qualification. Each size is on the Regulated Qualifications Framework with its own number: Award 603/4833/1, Certificate 603/4834/3, Diploma 603/4837/9.
• Level 7. On GOV.UK's list, Level 7 is the same level as a master's degree. CMI Level 7 is a professional qualification, not a master's degree.
• CMI membership while you study. If you are not already a member, you get free CMI Affiliate membership until you finish your studies.
• Letters after your name, through membership. CMI says the Associate grade (ACMI) is for people who have completed a CMI Certificate or Diploma through an Approved Centre. It is renewed each year, and CMI's page shows £189.00 a year.
• A route to Chartered Manager. With the Level 7 Certificate or Diploma, completed in the last 5 years, and at least 3 years of management experience, you can apply for Chartered Manager (CMgr) through CMI's Fast Track. CMI's fast track to Chartered status costs £162+VAT, plus membership fees where applicable.

Are CMI qualifications recognised?

CMI qualifications are regulated qualifications, each with its own number on the Regulated Qualifications Framework. CMI is the chartered professional body for management. GOV.UK's Regulated Professions Register lists CMI as the chartered body for the protected title Chartered Manager (CMgr). How much a particular employer values CMI is up to that employer, so check the job adverts in your sector.

Reasons CMI Level 7 may not be right for you

• The job asks for a degree or an MBA. CMI Level 7 is not a master's degree. If a role or a promotion asks for a degree or an MBA, an MBA may be required.
• Your employer prefers a different body. If your employer prefers ILM or another awarding body, check before you enrol.
• You are newer to management. If you manage a team or a service rather than set strategy, the CMI Level 5 in Management and Leadership may fit better.
• Time. The Diploma is 380 hours and four assignments of 4,000 to 4,500 words. That is about 38 weeks at 10 hours a week.
• You want letters straight away. The qualification does not give letters on its own. Letters come with CMI membership grades, which have yearly fees.
