Level 3 childcare qualification explained: routes, cost and what counts in 2026

What a Level 3 childcare qualification is, which titles count as full and relevant, how long it takes, what it costs and how to get it free or online in 2026.

Short answer: A Level 3 childcare qualification is the Department for Education's practitioner standard for working with children from birth to five in England. The current title is the Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Educator, and it is the qualification that lets you count as a Level 3 adult in EYFS staff-to-child ratios, lead a room and be left in charge. You can get it through a college course, an apprenticeship or online. Lift College's Level 3 Early Years Educator course online is Ofqual regulated (qualification number 610/3598/1), awarded by TQUK, studied with a named UK tutor, and starts with a 7-day free trial with nothing charged until day 8.

What is a Level 3 childcare qualification?

"Level 3" is a rung on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), the same level as A levels. In childcare, a Level 3 qualification trains you to plan and lead children's learning under the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), observe and assess development, keep children safe and work with parents. It is the level nurseries recruit for most actively, because every ratio group in a setting must contain at least one Level 3 member of staff.

Several older titles still appear on job adverts: NVQ Level 3 in Children's Care, Learning and Development, CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Education, BTEC National in Children's Play, Learning and Development. Most are still recognised as "full and relevant" if they appear on the DfE Early Years Qualifications List, but no provider enrols new learners on them. The current qualification is the Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Educator (EYE), offered by awarding bodies including TQUK and NCFE CACHE.

Which Level 3 childcare qualifications count as full and relevant?

Only qualifications the DfE lists as full and relevant let you count in ratios at Level 3. The quick way to check any title is the gov.uk early years qualifications checker; we explain how it works in our early years qualification checker guide.

The last row matters most for online shoppers. Many "Level 3 childcare courses" advertised online are awards or certificates with no placement. They can be useful introductions, but they do not make you a Level 3 practitioner and do not count in ratios.

Do you need a Level 2 first?

No. There is no requirement to hold a Level 2 childcare qualification before starting Level 3, and most adult learners go straight to the Diploma. Level 2 suits school leavers who want a shorter first step and is explained in our Level 2 childcare qualification guide. To be counted at Level 3 in ratios you do need a Level 2 English qualification, which is GCSE English at grade 4 (C) or above or Functional Skills English Level 2. Since January 2024 the Level 2 maths requirement applies to managers rather than practitioners. If English is the gap, Lift College's Functional Skills courses can be studied alongside the Diploma.

How do you get a Level 3 childcare qualification?

There are three live routes. All three end with the same full and relevant Diploma; the difference is who pays, where you learn and how long it takes.

Online

An online Level 3 childcare qualification means the theory, assignments and tutor support are online, while the placement hours happen in a real nursery, pre-school or childminding setting. Lift College's Diploma is assessed by portfolio and observation with no exams, takes 12 to 18 months, and requires at least 300 placement hours in an Ofsted registered setting that follows the EYFS. If you already work in a setting, those hours come from your job. For a side-by-side look at online providers and prices, see our Level 3 childcare course online comparison.

College

Further education colleges run the Diploma full time or part time over one to two years, usually with a placement day each week. This is the traditional route for 16 to 18 year olds and is often free for them. Adults may qualify for a free place (see below) but have to fit a fixed timetable.

Apprenticeship

The Level 3 Early Years Educator apprenticeship standard combines employment with the Diploma. You are paid, the training is funded, and you finish with the same qualification plus experience on your CV. The trade-off is time and pay: it typically takes 18 to 24 months and apprentice wages are low in year one. Our childcare apprenticeships guide weighs the two routes in detail.

How much does a Level 3 childcare qualification cost?

Costs vary by route. College fees for adults who are not eligible for funding run into the low thousands of pounds, and online providers list prices from around £1,200 to £1,850 paid up front. Lift College charges a monthly subscription with nothing to pay in the first 7 days, no contract and a 14-day money back guarantee on every payment. The live price is always on the Level 3 Early Years Educator course page.

Can you get a Level 3 childcare qualification for free?

Sometimes. In England, Free Courses for Jobs can fund a Level 3 qualification in childcare and early years if you are aged 19 or over and you earn below £25,750 or are unemployed (gov.uk, updated 29 July 2025). Some areas set a different earnings cap, and the rules on qualifications you already hold can differ, so check with the provider. The free place has to be delivered by a provider on the free-courses list, usually a college, and some of those courses can be studied part-time or online on that provider's timetable. A self-paced diploma from a provider that is not on that list is not covered. Our guide to free courses for adults explains how to apply.

What jobs can you do with a Level 3 childcare qualification?

A full and relevant Level 3 opens the roles that require ratio status: nursery practitioner or early years educator, room leader, deputy manager (with experience), pre-school leader and registered childminder with Level 3 status. It is also the entry point for Level 4 and Level 5 early years qualifications and for early years degrees. Our early years qualification levels 2 to 5 guide shows what each step unlocks; for current pay, see early years and nursery pay 2026.

Which Level 3 childcare course should you choose?

  • You are 16 to 18 or want to be paid while you train: choose the apprenticeship. Search the government's Find an apprenticeship service and ask local nurseries directly.
  • You are 19 or over, earn below £25,750 or are unemployed, and can attend a college timetable: ask your local college whether its Early Years Educator course is funded under Free Courses for Jobs.
  • You already work or volunteer in a setting, are changing career, or need to study around a job or children: choose an online Diploma from an Ofqual regulated provider with tutor support. Lift College's Level 3 Early Years Educator is TQUK awarded, has no exams, and you can start today with a 7-day free trial.
  • You are weighing up teaching assistant work instead: compare the two in our Early Years Educator Level 3 guide, or browse every option on the childcare courses online hub.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Level 3 childcare qualification equivalent to A levels?

Yes in level, not in content. Level 3 on the RQF is the same level as A levels, and the Early Years Educator Diploma carries UCAS tariff points for university applications in early years and related subjects. It does not replace GCSE English, which you still need at grade 4 (C) or Functional Skills English Level 2 to count in ratios.

How long does a Level 3 childcare qualification take?

Online, 12 to 18 months at Lift College, with your own placement hours running alongside. At college, one to two years. Through an apprenticeship, usually 18 to 24 months.

Is NVQ Level 3 childcare still available?

No. NVQs in childcare were replaced by the RQF Diploma. Existing NVQ Level 3 holders remain full and relevant if their title is on the DfE Early Years Qualifications List. New learners take the Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Educator.

Can I do a Level 3 childcare qualification without working in a nursery?

You need placement hours in an Ofsted registered setting to complete the Diploma, but you do not need to be employed. Voluntary placements count, and many learners arrange one or two days a week with a local nursery or pre-school while they study online.

What is the difference between Level 3 childcare and Level 3 Early Years Educator?

They are the same thing in today's system. "Level 3 childcare qualification" is the everyday phrase; "Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Educator" is the regulated title that appears on your certificate and on the DfE list.
