Level 2 Childcare Qualification: Do You Need One in 2026?

Published 5 min read

Answer first: A Level 2 childcare qualification, usually the Level 2 Diploma for the Early Years Practitioner, qualifies you to work in a nursery or pre-school as an assistant under the supervision of a Level 3 practitioner. It takes around six to twelve months, counts in EYFS staff ratios at Level 2, and has no entry requirements. You do not need it before Level 3: most adults go straight to the Level 3 Early Years Educator.

What is a Level 2 childcare qualification?

Level 2 sits on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) at the same level as GCSE grades 4 to 9. In early years, the main Level 2 options are:

What is a Level 2 childcare qualification?
QualificationAwarding bodiesTypical sizeWho it is for
Level 2 Diploma for the Early Years PractitionerNCFE CACHE, City & Guilds and othersAround 290 guided learning hours plus placementLearners who want to work in a setting as an assistant now
Level 2 early years certificates, for example the NCFE CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Working with Children in Early Years and Primary SettingsVarious awarding bodiesSmaller than the Diploma; placement requirements varySchool leavers or career changers testing the sector
Level 2 Early Years Practitioner apprenticeshipEmployer plus training provider12 to 18 months, paidLearners aged 16 and over who already have a nursery job

Only qualifications on the DfE Early Years Qualifications List count as "full and relevant" for ratio purposes, and the title on your certificate must match the list exactly. For courses started now, that means an approved Level 2 Diploma or the Level 2 Early Years Practitioner apprenticeship. Level 2 certificates are not on the list, and nor is the knowledge-only pathway of the NCFE CACHE Diploma, so they are useful preparation but do not count you as a Level 2 member of staff.

Level 2 staff work alongside a Level 3 practitioner. You cannot be a key person on your own, lead a room, or be counted in the Level 3 half of a nursery's ratio. For current rates by role see our early years and nursery pay guide.

How does Level 2 count in EYFS ratios?

The EYFS statutory framework sets staff-to-child ratios by age and requires that at least half of all staff counted in ratios hold a full and relevant Level 2 qualification, and that at least one member of staff in each ratio group holds a full and relevant Level 3. So a Level 2 Diploma makes you countable, but a room still needs a Level 3 lead. The full table is in our EYFS ratios and qualification requirements guide, and the framework itself is explained in what the EYFS framework is.

The honest answer for most adults is Level 3. It has no Level 2 prerequisite, it is the qualification nurseries advertise for, and the extra six months of study buys you the right to lead. Choose Level 2 if you are 16 or 17, want a shorter first step, or are not yet sure the sector is for you. Our qualification levels compared guide goes into the detail.

Can you study Level 2 childcare online?

Yes, but the Diploma still requires a placement in a real setting, so "online" means the theory is online and you arrange supervised hours in a nursery or pre-school. Some Level 2 courses advertised online, including free ones, are certificates or knowledge-only pathways that are not on the DfE list and do not count in ratios. Check the exact qualification title and number against the DfE Early Years Qualifications List before you enrol.

Lift College does not currently offer a Level 2 childcare course. Our online route is the Ofqual-regulated TQUK Level 3 Early Years Educator, which you can start without a Level 2, with a free 7-day trial and nothing charged until day 8.

Do you need GCSEs for Level 2 childcare?

No. Level 2 childcare qualifications have no formal entry requirements. Colleges may ask for GCSE grades 3 or above in English and maths for the full-time Diploma, but this is a college policy rather than an awarding body rule. Since January 2024, Level 3 practitioners no longer need a Level 2 maths qualification to count in ratios, but they still need a suitable Level 2 English qualification, such as GCSE English at grade 4 or above or Functional Skills English Level 2. Managers appointed on or after 4 January 2024 need Level 2 maths, or must achieve it within two years.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Level 2 childcare qualification worth it?

It is worth it if you need to be employable in a nursery quickly, are under 18, or want a short first step. If you can commit 12 to 18 months, Level 3 gives you a broader role and higher pay.

Can I go straight to Level 3 childcare without Level 2?

Yes. The Level 3 Early Years Educator has no Level 2 prerequisite. Most adult learners and career changers start at Level 3.

What is the difference between Level 2 and Level 3 childcare?

Level 2 trains you to support children under supervision; Level 3 trains you to plan, assess and lead. Only Level 3 lets you be the qualified lead in an EYFS ratio group.

Is NVQ Level 2 childcare still available?

No. NVQs were phased out, first by the QCF and then by the RQF, which has been the single framework since 2015. The modern equivalent is the Level 2 Diploma for the Early Years Practitioner. See our NVQ vs RQF explainer.

How much does a Level 2 childcare course cost?

Full-time college places are free for 16 to 18 year olds. Adult learners may qualify for funding, and private online providers set their own prices. The Level 3 Early Years Educator at Lift College is £89.99 a month.
