Early Years Qualification Levels 2 to 5: What Each One Unlocks

Early years qualifications in England run from Level 2 (assistant) through Level 3 (Early Years Educator, the practitioner standard) to Level 4 (advanced practitioner) and Level 5 (lead practitioner, room leader and manager routes). Only Level 2 and Level 3 change how you count in EYFS ratios; Levels 4 and 5 are career and leadership steps. Level 3 is the one most employers ask for first.

What is a Level 2 early years qualification?

Level 2 is the entry qualification for working in a nursery or pre-school under supervision. The listed titles are the Level 2 Diploma for the Early Years Practitioner and the Level 2 apprenticeship of the same name. It covers child development, safeguarding, play and the EYFS, and includes placement hours. Level 2 staff make up the "at least half" of ratio staff that the EYFS requires to be qualified. Lift College does not offer a Level 2 course; most learners with any experience can start at Level 3.

What is a Level 3 early years qualification?

Level 3 is the Early Years Educator (EYE) standard and the qualification nurseries recruit for most. A full and relevant Level 3 lets you lead a room, act as key person for a group of children and be counted as the Level 3 member of staff in each ratio group. It is also the minimum for a setting manager, together with two years' experience. The Level 3 Early Years Educator course at Lift College is the Ofqual-regulated TQUK diploma, studied online with placement hours, with a free 7-day trial and nothing charged until day 8. Check any Level 3 title with the early years qualification checker.

What is a Level 4 early years qualification?

Level 4 is an advanced-practitioner step rather than a licence to practise. Titles vary by awarding body and usually include "advanced practitioner"; check any Level 4 title on the DfE Early Years Qualifications List. It deepens knowledge in areas such as SEND, observation and leading practice, and suits a practitioner who wants a senior role without moving into management yet. Level 4 does not change ratio status: holders are counted at Level 3.

What is a Level 5 early years qualification?

Level 5 is the leadership tier. The two common routes are the Level 5 Early Years Lead Practitioner apprenticeship (a work-based standard for experienced Level 3 staff who lead practice across a setting) and Level 5 leadership diplomas for the early years workforce, the usual route for deputy and nursery managers. Foundation degrees in early years also sit at Level 5. Level 5 is what nursery groups ask for when they advertise manager and lead practitioner posts, but it is not required by the EYFS itself; the statutory manager requirement is a full and relevant Level 3 plus experience.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need Level 2 before Level 3 in childcare?
No. The Level 3 Early Years Educator has no Level 2 prerequisite. Learners aged 16 and over can start at Level 3 directly.
Does a Level 5 childcare qualification count as Level 5 in EYFS ratios?
There is no separate Level 5 ratio status. Level 4 and Level 5 holders are counted at Level 3; only Level 6 (early years teacher or listed degree) changes the ratio to 1:13 for three to five year olds.
What is the Level 5 Early Years Lead Practitioner?
A Level 5 apprenticeship standard for experienced practitioners who lead early years practice across a setting, with a typical duration of 24 months alongside work (standard ST0551).
Is a Level 5 childcare qualification a degree?
No. Level 5 sits below a bachelor's degree (Level 6). A foundation degree in early years is at Level 5; a full BA in early childhood studies is Level 6.
What qualification does a nursery manager need?
The EYFS requires a full and relevant Level 3 and at least two years' experience. Most employers also ask for a Level 5 leadership qualification.
