You can do banksman training online in the UK with Lift College. Banksman Training is 2 hours of learning in 5 short modules on guiding reversing vehicles and mobile plant safely, written for yards, depots, warehouses, construction sites, waste sites and delivery operations in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. It costs £19.99 pay once, gives you a CPD certificate issued by Lift College the same day you pass, and comes with a free refresher every 3 years. It is a knowledge course: most sites also assess you in person on their own vehicles and signals before you work as a banksman, and signalling for crane lifts is a different role with its own practical training. Employers look for a certificate that records the course, hours, completion date and refresh date, and Lift College's certificate shows each of these.
What employers look for in an online banksman certificate
Your employer decides the vehicle marshalling training its site needs, based on its workplace transport risk assessment and HSE guidance HSG136. The Health and Safety at Work Act and the Workplace Regulations expect anyone who guides vehicles to be trained and competent. When an employer checks a certificate, they usually look for:
- Content that follows the law and HSE guidance. The Health and Safety at Work Act, the Workplace Regulations on traffic routes, PUWER on mobile work equipment, the Safety Signs and Signals Regulations and HSE's HSG136 workplace transport guidance.
- A clear, verifiable record. The course name, hours of learning and completion date, with a way to confirm the certificate.
- The essentials of the banksman role. Keeping pedestrians and vehicles apart, blind spots, where to stand, stopping a manoeuvre, the standard hand signals and radio use, and the visibility aids and PPE the job needs.
- A refresh date. Vehicles, site layouts and people change, so a refresh date matters.
Lift College's certificate does each of these. It records Banksman Training, 2 hours of learning, your completion date and a recommended refresh date 3 years on, with a unique certificate number and a verification link. The course gives the knowledge; many employers then confirm competence with a short practical assessment on their own site and vehicles, and your employer decides whether that is needed. If your job includes slinging loads and signalling for crane lifts, that needs practical training and assessment on site, usually through a plant operator card scheme.

What the Lift College course covers
There are 5 short modules, each with a knowledge check, then a final test with an 80% pass mark and unlimited free retakes.
- Introduction to the banksman role. What a banksman, reversing assistant or vehicle marshal does, why reversing vehicles kill and injure people, the Health and Safety at Work Act, the Workplace Regulations on traffic routes, PUWER on mobile work equipment and HSE's HSG136 guidance. How the role differs from a crane slinger signaller.
- Safe management of vehicles and mobile plant. Safe site, safe vehicle, safe driver. Separating pedestrians and vehicles, traffic routes, one-way systems, designated reversing and loading areas, speed limits, lighting, mirrors and cameras, reversing alarms, and the risk assessment that decides when a banksman is needed and when the manoeuvre should be designed out instead.
- Blind spots, positioning and stopping a manoeuvre. The blind spots of lorries, vans, forklifts, dumpers, excavators and refuse vehicles, where the banksman stands so the driver can see them in a mirror, keeping clear of the swing and the path of the vehicle, the rule that the driver stops if they lose sight of the banksman, and controlling the area so nobody else walks into it.
- Communication and hand signals. Agreeing the plan with the driver before the manoeuvre starts, the standard hand signals for start, stop, emergency stop, come towards me, move away, turn left and right and the distance remaining, keeping signals clear and large, using a radio with simple agreed words, and what to do when communication breaks down.
- Training, visibility aids and PPE. What training a banksman and a driver need and how the employer records it, high visibility clothing to the right standard, safety footwear, head protection and hearing protection where needed, working in the dark, rain and fog, fatigue, and the limits of the role: when to refuse a manoeuvre and who to tell.
By the end you can explain the banksman role and when one is needed, describe how a workplace keeps pedestrians and vehicles apart, identify the blind spots of lorries, vans, forklifts and construction plant, stand where the driver can always see you and know what to do if sight is lost, use the standard hand signals and a radio clearly, carry out the checks before a manoeuvre, and know the training, visibility aids and PPE the role needs and when a manoeuvre should not go ahead.
The law and guidance it is written around
- Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, section 2 (England, Wales and Scotland). Employers must provide the information, instruction, training and supervision needed to keep employees safe, so far as is reasonably practicable, which includes anyone who guides or works near moving vehicles. Northern Ireland has the same duty in the Health and Safety at Work (Northern Ireland) Order 1978.
- Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, regulation 17 (England, Wales and Scotland). Every workplace must be organised so that pedestrians and vehicles can circulate safely. Traffic routes must be suitable for the people and vehicles using them, sufficient in number and size, and kept separate or protected where pedestrians and vehicles share them. This is the regulation behind one-way systems, reversing areas and the decision to use a banksman. Northern Ireland has the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1993.
- Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (England, Wales and Scotland). PUWER applies to lorries, forklifts and construction plant used at work as well as to fixed machinery. Equipment must be suitable, maintained and used only by people with adequate information, instruction and training, and the mobile work equipment rules cover the risks to people carried on or working near moving vehicles. Northern Ireland has PUWER (Northern Ireland) 1999.
- Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 (Great Britain). These regulations set out the standard hand signals for directing vehicle and lifting movements at work, alongside safety signs and acoustic and verbal signals. Using the standard signals means a driver from another company understands your banksman the first time.
- HSE HSG136: Workplace transport safety, a brief guide for employers (Great Britain). HSE's guidance on managing vehicles at work, built around a safe site, safe vehicle and safe driver. It covers traffic routes, reversing, visibility aids, the use of banksmen and the training drivers and pedestrians need. Guidance rather than law, but it describes what HSE expects employers to do.
