Free NVQ Level 3 Health and Social Care vs paid: the Level 3 Adult Care Diploma online

You can get a free NVQ Level 3 Health and Social Care, now called the Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care, through your job. On a care apprenticeship you do not pay for training, and employers in England can claim the cost back through a government scheme. Some colleges fund places for adults who qualify. Every route, free or paid, needs you working or volunteering in adult care. Paid courses we checked cost £579 to £2,500. At Lift College the Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care is £69.99 a month or £629.99 a year when you pay today, or £79.99 a month after a 7-day free trial.

Decision guide

How the Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care works, free or paid

The Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care is the modern replacement for the NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care. It is the qualification for senior care workers and lead practitioners in England. Look for a regulated diploma on Skills for Care's approved qualifications list.

It is a work based qualification. You must be in paid or voluntary work in an adult care setting for the whole course, because your skills are observed in real practice. Several units must be observed in person, not remotely. Your employer normally arranges an enhanced DBS check, and you need their agreement to observations on shift.

That shapes the free vs paid choice. There is no free route that lets you skip the workplace, and no paid route either. The difference is who pays, who chooses the provider, and whether the qualification is tied to one employer's programme.

New to care? The diploma is not the starting point. Begin with the Care Certificate, the induction standards for new care workers, and look for paid or voluntary care work.

An adult care apprenticeship. The Lead adult care worker apprenticeship is a Level 3 route. Nottingham College lists it as typically 18 months, including the "Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care approved by Skills for Care". Entry needs an enhanced DBS check and the Care Certificate standards, and you need Level 2 English and maths before the end-point assessment. The government's apprenticeships site says "As an apprentice, you do not have to pay for any training you have", and you earn at least the National Minimum Wage for apprentices. GOV.UK says apprentices get time for training of "at least 20% of your normal working hours". You need a care employer to take you on as an apprentice.

Employer-funded, with the Learning and Development Support Scheme. The Department of Health and Social Care's Learning and Development Support Scheme (LDSS) lets adult social care employers in England claim towards the cost of eligible courses and qualifications for non-regulated care staff. The employer claims, not the learner. GOV.UK says courses "must be paid for before reimbursement can be claimed", and the employer needs an up-to-date Adult Social Care Workforce Data Set account with Skills for Care. The 2026 to 2027 scheme covers training paid for between 1 April 2026 and 31 March 2027. Maximum amounts are set in the scheme's eligible courses list, so ask your employer what they can claim.

A funded college place (Adult Skills Fund). The Adult Skills Fund rules for 2026 to 2027 say learners aged 19 to 23 with no full level 3 "must be fully funded" for a qualification on the level 3 legal entitlement or Free Courses for Jobs list. Free Courses for Jobs is for people aged 19 or over who earn below £25,750 or are unemployed. Colleges decide which care qualifications they offer this way, so ask a local college or adult education service whether its Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care is funded for you. The college courses we checked need you to be working in care.

So what does paying add?

If your employer will fund the diploma, or take you on as an apprentice, that is a good offer. You get the same kind of regulated diploma without paying. The trade-offs:

  • Your employer chooses. On a funded or apprenticeship route, your employer usually picks the provider and the timing.
  • You need the employer first. LDSS claims and apprenticeships both depend on a care employer who is willing to take part.
  • College places depend on eligibility. Age, past qualifications, earnings and where you live all decide whether a college place is free.

Paying yourself means you can start when you choose, with the provider you choose, and keep the pace you want. You still need a care setting that agrees to observations. If your employer later agrees to pay, the Lift College diploma is eligible for Skills for Care LDSS claims.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get NVQ Level 3 Health and Social Care free?
Yes, sometimes. The NVQ Level 3 is now the Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care. You can get it free on an adult care apprenticeship, through an employer who pays and claims through the Learning and Development Support Scheme, or through a funded college place if you qualify.
Is there a level 3 health and social care online free course?
Not without a care setting. Funded routes still need you working or volunteering in adult care, because your practice is observed. Several providers we checked offer online study, but who pays depends on your employer, an apprenticeship or college funding.
How much does the Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care cost online in the UK?
Paid courses we checked on 26 October 2026 cost £579 to £2,500. Lift College is £69.99 a month or £629.99 a year when you pay today, or £79.99 a month after a 7-day free trial, with all fees included.
Can my employer claim back the cost of a Level 3 adult care diploma?
Yes, if they are eligible. Adult social care employers in England can claim towards eligible qualifications for non-regulated care staff through the Learning and Development Support Scheme, after paying for the course. The Lift College diploma is eligible for LDSS claims.
Do I need to work in care to do the Level 3 diploma?
Yes. You must be in paid or voluntary work in an adult care setting for the whole course, so your skills can be observed in real practice.
Is NVQ Level 3 the same as the Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care?
Yes. The Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care is the modern replacement for the NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care, and employers treat the two as the same qualification.
I am new to care. Where should I start?
Start with the Care Certificate, the induction standards for new care workers. Lift College's Care Certificate course is £19.99, pay once, with 12 hours of learning.
