Yes, if you work in adult social care in England and want to move into a senior care worker or lead practitioner role: the Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care is the qualification employers expect for those jobs, and it is the entry point to the Level 5 management diploma. Lift College offers the TQUK Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care (RQF), qualification number 610/6988/7, for £69.99 a month or £713.99 a year with all fees and the TQUK certificate included, assessed by portfolio with no exams, with a 7-day free trial, nothing charged until day 8, no contract and a 14-day money-back guarantee on every payment. Below is what it qualifies you for, who it suits, how assessment works and what the pay figures say.
What the Level 3 Diploma qualifies you for
The Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care is an Ofqual-regulated qualification worth 59 credits, made up of 40 credits from 15 mandatory units plus at least 19 credits from optional units. It is listed by Skills for Care as the Level 3 qualification for the adult social care workforce, and it is the qualification care employers ask for when recruiting:
- Senior care workers who lead shifts, supervise care workers and take responsibility for care plans.
- Lead practitioners who specialise in an area such as dementia, learning disability or end-of-life care and support colleagues to deliver it.
- Deputy roles in some smaller services, where employers may ask for the Level 3 before you progress to the Level 5.
It is also the usual step before the Level 5 Diploma in Leading and Managing an Adult Care Service, which is the qualification CQC expects for registered managers. See How to become a senior care worker, then a care home manager for the full progression.
Who it is for, and who it is not for
The diploma is for people aged 16 or over who are already working or volunteering in an adult care setting in England, with Level 2 English and maths recommended. Lift College's course page is clear about who should not enrol:
- People who are not yet working in a care setting, because the evidence comes from your own practice.
- People who want the Level 5 management qualification straight away.
- People who need the Care Certificate induction standards, which is a separate short course.
If you are new to care, the Care Certificate at £19.99, pay once, is the right first step, and the Level 3 follows once you are in post.
How portfolio assessment works
There are no exams. You pass the diploma by building a portfolio of evidence that shows you have the knowledge and can demonstrate the skills in each unit. Assessment has three parts:
- Written evidence for the knowledge units: reflective accounts, written answers and case studies submitted to your tutor.
- Observation of practice on shift for the skills units. Several units cannot be observed remotely, so an assessor sees you at work.
- Professional discussion with your assessor to confirm understanding and fill any gaps.
Grading is pass only. Marking is internal, with external quality assurance by TQUK. At Lift College work is marked by a named UK tutor in 5 to 7 working days, and AI Study Support is available between tutor contact.
How long it takes
Lift College's typical study time is 12 to 18 months at about 8 to 12 hours a week. The qualification is 496 guided learning hours, with a total qualification time of 590 hours. Because the course is a monthly subscription with no contract, finishing in 12 months costs £839.88 and 18 months costs £1,259.82, or £713.99 if you pay annually. Starting now without the trial gives 15% off for life.
What senior care workers earn
Lift College publishes these figures with their sources on its course pages:
| Role | Pay | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Care worker | £12.60 an hour, median | Skills for Care, independent sector, England, December 2025 |
| Senior care worker or lead practitioner | £13.33 an hour, median | Skills for Care, independent sector, England, December 2025 |
| Senior care worker, full-time | £29,381 a year, median | ONS Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings 2025, provisional |
| National Living Wage | £12.71 an hour from April 2026 | UK Government |
On these figures the hourly median gap between a care worker and a senior care worker is £0.73, or about £1,400 a year at 37 hours a week. The National Careers Service profile for senior care worker gives a range of £24,000 for a starter to £29,000 with experience. The bigger financial gain comes from what the Level 3 unlocks: the Level 5 and management roles, where the ONS median for residential, day and domiciliary care managers is £42,700. Full tables are in the UK care worker pay 2026 guide.
So is it worth it?
For a care worker who wants to stay in care and progress, yes. The diploma is the recognised route to senior roles, it is assessed on the job you already do, and at Lift College it costs less than most senior care workers earn in a week each month. It is not worth it if you are not working in care, or if you want a management qualification immediately. Compare all three Lift College care courses on the health and social care hub.
