CPD guide

You can do customer service training online in the UK with Lift College. Customer Service Training is 3 hours of learning in 6 short modules, written for front-line staff, team leaders, new starters and apprentices in retail, hospitality, contact centres, care, public services and offices in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. It covers first impressions, finding out what the customer needs, handling complaints, consumer law and serving every customer well. It costs £19.99 pay once, gives you a CPD certificate issued by Lift College the same day you pass, and comes with a free refresher every 3 years. Employers look for a certificate that records the course, hours, completion date and refresh date, and Lift College's certificate shows each of these.

What employers look for in an online customer service training course

There is no legal requirement for a customer service certificate, so your employer decides what training each front-line role needs. What the law does set are the rules staff work within: goods and services must meet the Consumer Rights Act 2015, staff must not mislead or pressure customers, and disabled customers must not be treated less favourably. When an employer looks at online customer service training, they usually look for:

  • The skills customers notice. First impressions in person, on the phone and in writing, listening and questioning, managing expectations and saying no without losing the customer.
  • A clear way to handle complaints. Listen, apologise, find out, agree a fix and follow through, with clear points for when to involve a manager and how to record what happened.
  • The rules front-line staff work within. Consumer rights to a repair, replacement, price reduction or refund, the unfair trading rules on misleading and aggressive practices, and reasonable adjustments for disabled customers under the Equality Act 2010.
  • A clear, verifiable record. The course name, hours of learning and completion date, with a way to confirm the certificate.
  • A refresh date. Consumer law, policies and the channels customers use all change, so a refresh date matters.

Lift College's certificate does each of these. It records Customer Service Training, 3 hours of learning, your completion date and a recommended refresh date 3 years on, with a unique certificate number and a verification link. Your employer will also show you its own returns, refunds, complaints and data protection policies, and the course prepares you to follow them.

What the Lift College course covers

There are 6 short modules, each with a knowledge check, then a multiple choice final test with an 80% pass mark and unlimited free retakes.

  1. What customer service is and why it matters. Internal and external customers, what customers expect, the cost of losing a customer and the value of a loyal one. How organisations measure service: satisfaction surveys, complaints, reviews and repeat business.
  2. First impressions and communication. Greeting, appearance, tone and body language. Telephone manner, holding and transferring calls, and writing emails, messages and chat replies that are clear, polite and quick. Matching your style to the customer.
  3. Understanding what the customer needs. Active listening, open and closed questions, summarising and confirming. Managing expectations, explaining what you can and cannot do, and saying no without losing the customer.
  4. Problem solving and complaints. Why customers complain and what they want from you. A step by step approach: listen, apologise, find out, agree a fix, follow through. Staying calm with angry customers, when to involve a manager and how to record and learn from complaints.
  5. The law, policies and procedures. Consumer Rights Act 2015: goods as described, satisfactory quality, fit for purpose, services with reasonable care and skill, and the right to repair, replacement or refund. Unfair trading rules on misleading and aggressive practices. Working within your employer's returns, refunds, complaints and data protection policies.
  6. Serving every customer well. Equality Act duties to disabled customers and reasonable adjustments. Serving customers who are deaf, blind or partially sighted, have a learning disability, are autistic, are older or whose first language is not English. Vulnerable customers, patience and dignity.

By the end you can explain what good customer service is and how it is measured, make a good first impression in person, on the phone, by email and in chat, find out what a customer actually needs, spot frustration before it becomes a complaint, handle a complaint to a resolution, explain the main consumer rights and what staff must not do, and adapt your service for disabled customers and people who need extra support.

The law and guidance it is written around

Customer service training is not required by law, but the course is written around the law below.

  • Consumer Rights Act 2015 (UK). Goods sold to consumers must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described, services must be carried out with reasonable care and skill, and digital content must meet the same standards. Where they do not, the consumer has rights to a repair, replacement, price reduction or refund, which front-line staff are often the first to deal with.
  • Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008. Banned misleading actions and omissions, aggressive selling and a list of practices that are always unfair, such as false claims about limited availability or ignoring a request to leave. From April 2025 these rules were carried into the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 with the same principles. Staff who mislead or pressure customers can put their employer in breach.
  • Equality Act 2010 (England, Wales and Scotland). Anyone providing goods, services or facilities to the public must not discriminate because of a protected characteristic, and must make reasonable adjustments so disabled customers are not at a substantial disadvantage, for example by offering help, information in another format or more time. Northern Ireland has separate equality law, including the Disability Discrimination Act 1995.

Frequently asked questions

Which online customer service certificate do UK employers accept?
There is no legal requirement for a customer service certificate, so your employer decides what it accepts. Look for a certificate that records the course, hours, completion date and refresh date and can be verified. Lift College's certificate shows all of these, with a unique number and verification link your employer can use.
Is online customer service training valid?
Yes. The skills and consumer law knowledge front-line roles need can be learned online and then put into practice with real customers. This course covers first impressions, listening, complaints, consumer rights and inclusive service. It is a CPD course, and your employer will also show you its own policies and systems.
How often should customer service training be refreshed?
There is no legal interval. Consumer law, your employer's policies and the channels customers use all change, so Lift College recommends refreshing every 3 years, and the refresher is free. Refresh sooner if you move into a team leader role or start handling complaints.
How do I handle an angry customer?
Let them finish, acknowledge how they feel, apologise for the experience without arguing about blame, ask questions to find out exactly what went wrong, then agree a fix and a time, and follow through. Keep your voice low and slow and bring in a manager if the customer makes threats or you cannot resolve it within your authority. Module 4 covers this step by step.
What rights do customers have under the Consumer Rights Act 2015?
Goods must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described, and services must be carried out with reasonable care and skill. Where they are not, the customer has rights to a repair, replacement, price reduction or refund. Module 5 explains these at the level front-line staff need.
What does good customer service look like?
Customers remember how they were treated, especially when something went wrong. Good service means a warm first impression, listening to find out what the customer actually needs, being clear about what you can and cannot do, and fixing problems before they become complaints. Module 1 also explains how organisations measure it through surveys, complaints, reviews and repeat business.
Does it count towards my CPD?
Yes. The course is 3 hours of learning, shown on your CPD certificate issued by Lift College, so you can log the hours in your CPD record. The certificate also shows your completion date and a recommended refresh date 3 years on, with a unique certificate number your employer can verify.
