About this course

Customer Service Training

You can do customer service training online in the UK with Lift College's Customer Service Training course. It is 3 hours of learning in 6 short modules, covering what good customer service looks like and why it matters to the business, first impressions and communication in person, on the phone and in writing, finding out what the customer actually needs, solving problems and handling complaints, the consumer law and policies you work within, and serving every customer well, including disabled customers and people who need extra time. It costs £19.99, pay once, and your CPD certificate issued by Lift College is ready the same day you pass. Lift College recommends a refresh every 3 years, and the refresher is free.

Customers rarely remember the product. They remember how they were treated, especially when something went wrong. A poor experience is shared with friends, posted online and reported to the business's regulator or trade body, and a lost customer costs far more to replace than to keep. Businesses that sell goods, services or digital content also have legal duties: goods must be as described and of satisfactory quality, services must be done with reasonable care and skill, and staff must not mislead or pressure customers. Service providers must not treat disabled customers less favourably and must make reasonable adjustments.

This course covers the skills and the rules together. You learn how to make a good first impression, listen and ask the right questions, explain things clearly, stay calm with an angry customer, turn a complaint into a resolved problem, know when to say no and when to escalate, and apply your employer's policies and the law on refunds, returns and fair trading. It is written for front-line staff, team leaders, new starters, apprentices, people returning to work and anyone preparing for a management course across the UK.

By the end you can
  • Explain what good customer service is, why it matters to the business and how it is measured
  • Describe how to make a good first impression in person, on the phone, by email and in chat
  • Apply listening and questioning to find out what a customer actually needs
  • Recognise the signs that a customer is becoming frustrated and respond before it becomes a complaint
  • Carry out a structured approach to handling a complaint and agreeing a resolution
  • Identify the main rights customers have under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and what staff must not do under the unfair trading rules
  • Apply reasonable adjustments and inclusive service for disabled customers and people who need extra support
  • Explain when and how to escalate, record and learn from customer feedback

The law

The law this course supports

Consumer Rights Act 2015

Applies across the UK. Goods sold to consumers must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described, services must be carried out with reasonable care and skill, and digital content must meet the same standards. Where they do not, the consumer has rights to a repair, replacement, price reduction or refund, which front-line staff are often the first to deal with.

Read the legislation →

Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008

Banned misleading actions and omissions, aggressive selling and a list of practices that are always unfair, such as false claims about limited availability or ignoring a request to leave. From April 2025 these rules were carried into the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 with the same principles. Staff who mislead or pressure customers can put their employer in breach.

Read the legislation →

Equality Act 2010

Applies in England, Wales and Scotland. Anyone providing goods, services or facilities to the public must not discriminate because of a protected characteristic, and must make reasonable adjustments so disabled customers are not at a substantial disadvantage, for example by offering help, information in another format or more time. Northern Ireland has separate equality law, including the Disability Discrimination Act 1995.

What our learners say

Stories from Lift College learners on our qualifications, in their own words.

“I had been a care assistant for four years without a formal qualification. Lift College made the whole process straightforward, my assessor visited regularly and I completed my Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care in just over a year. I was promoted to senior care worker the month after I qualified.”
SharonLevel 3 Diploma in Adult Care (RQF)
“My employer was clear, I needed GCSE English to move into a supervisory role. Lift College helped me find the right exam board and an exam centre five minutes from home. Passed grade 4. Got the promotion.”

“My employer needed me to have Level 2 maths before they could register me on the Level 3 apprenticeship programme. Lift College was fast, the tutor was brilliant, and I resit my maths once after a near-miss and passed the second time. The whole thing took twelve weeks.”

FAQ

Questions about Customer Service Training

Is online customer service training valid for my job?

Your employer decides what training each role needs; there is no legal requirement for a customer service certificate. This course gives you the skills and the consumer law knowledge that most front-line roles expect, and your CPD certificate issued by Lift College records the course, 3 hours of learning and your completion date with a verification link. It is a CPD course, not a regulated qualification.

Who needs customer service training?

Anyone who deals with customers, clients, patients, residents or members of the public, in person, on the phone or in writing. That includes retail and hospitality staff, receptionists, contact centre agents, care and public service staff, and the team leaders who set the standard. It is also a sensible step for new starters, apprentices, people returning to work and anyone preparing for a management course.

How often should customer service training be refreshed?

There is no legal interval. Consumer law, your employer's policies and the channels customers use all change, so Lift College recommends refreshing every 3 years, and the refresher is free. Refresh sooner if you move into a team leader role or start handling complaints.

What does this course not cover?

It does not cover sales techniques, product knowledge for a particular industry, or your employer's own systems and scripts. It explains consumer rights at the level front-line staff need, not the detail a legal or compliance team would use, and it covers the non physical handling of angry customers only. For situations that may turn aggressive, see our conflict resolution course.

How do I handle an angry customer?

Module 4 gives you a structure: let them finish, acknowledge how they feel, apologise for the experience without arguing about blame, ask questions to find out exactly what went wrong, then agree a fix and a time, and follow through. Keep your voice low and slow, stick to what you can do, and bring in a manager if the customer makes threats or you cannot resolve it within your authority. Recording the complaint afterwards helps your employer stop it happening again.

How long do I keep access?

You keep your access for as long as Lift College offers the course, and never less than 3 years from the day you buy. Your certificate PDF is yours to keep.

What is the free refresher?

Lift College recommends refreshing this course every 3 years. When your date comes round, you can retake the latest version free and get a new certificate. We email you 30 days before.

Does it count towards my CPD?

Yes. The course is 3 hours of learning, shown on your CPD certificate issued by Lift College, so you can log the hours in your CPD record.

Can I get my money back?

Yes. Ask within 14 days of paying and we refund you in full.

Can my employer pay?

Yes. Your receipt shows the course, the date and the amount paid, and you can pass it to your employer. Buying for a team? Open a free organisation account: every course is £16.99, and you can pay by card or invoice with your PO.
