CPD guide

You can learn food hygiene online free, and the law does not require food handlers to hold a certificate. At Lift College, Food Hygiene Level 2 is £19.99, pay once: 3 hours in 7 modules, with a CPD certificate issued by Lift College the same day you pass. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) offers free online allergen training with a CPD certificate, but says it does not provide a food hygiene course or certificates. safefood offers a free basic food safety course for small food businesses. Paid Level 2 certificates we checked cost from £10.00 +VAT to £20 +VAT, and Level 3 from £89.00 +VAT to £130 +VAT.

How a food hygiene certificate works, free or paid

The law asks for training, not a certificate. Food businesses must make sure food handlers "are supervised and instructed and/or trained in food hygiene matters commensurate with their work activity" (Regulation (EC) No 852/2004, Annex II, Chapter XII). The FSA puts it plainly: "In the UK, food handlers don't have to hold a food hygiene certificate to prepare or sell food." It says training can be on the job, through self-study or from relevant past experience.

So why do most people get one? A certificate is the usual way to show your employer, and an environmental health officer at an inspection, what you learned and when. That is why many employers ask new staff for one.

The same regulation adds one more rule. People who develop and run a business's food safety procedures must have "received adequate training in the application of the HACCP principles". Level 3 courses cover this.

Which level suits which role?

  • Level 1: front of house, waiting and bar staff, kitchen porters, and people selling wrapped food.
  • Level 2: anyone who prepares, cooks or serves open food, such as chefs, cooks and kitchen assistants, and food staff in care homes, nurseries and schools.
  • Level 3: supervisors, head chefs and managers who run food safety procedures and train a team.

Your employer decides the level your role needs.

Free options: can you get a Level 2 food hygiene certificate free?

FSA free online training. The FSA says: "We provide free online food allergy training." It is suitable for all staff, and once you pass the tests you can download a CPD certificate. The FSA also lists free root cause analysis training. It does not offer a food hygiene course: "We do not provide a food hygiene course or certificates." Some councils also list FSA labelling, traceability and vacuum packing courses.

safefood for Business. safefood describes this as a "FREE online training programme in basic food safety" for "small food businesses in food service, catering, retail and manufacturing". You get a completion certificate when you finish the course. Belfast City Council lists it as free Level 2 food hygiene training for food businesses.

Your council or employer. The FSA says your local authority may provide or recommend food hygiene courses in your area. Some councils run courses, others do not. Many employers also pay for or run training for their staff.

We did not find a free Level 3 food hygiene certificate from an official body.

So what does paying add?

The free routes are useful, but they cover allergens or basic food safety, not a full food hygiene course at a set level. Paying adds:

  • A certificate at the level your job asks for. Level 1, 2 or 3 is named on the certificate, which is what employers usually ask to see.
  • Full course content. Paid Level 2 courses cover temperature control, cross-contamination, cleaning, personal hygiene and allergens in one place. Level 3 adds HACCP.
  • A record for inspections. A dated certificate gives your employer evidence of your training.
  • A set price. Level 2 runs from £10.00 +VAT to £20 +VAT in our table. Level 3 shows the biggest spread, from £19.99 at Lift College to £130 +VAT.

What you get with Lift College

It shows your hours, completion date and a recommended refresh date 3 years later, with a unique number and verification link. The refresher is free. You keep access for at least 3 years, and you can ask for a full refund within 14 days of paying. Training a team? It is £16.99 a course on a free organisation account. Learners must be 16 or over.

Which should you choose?

Take the free route if you want to learn about allergens, you run a small food business and want basic food safety training for your staff, or your employer already trains you on the job.

Pay for a course if your employer or a job advert asks for a Level 1, 2 or 3 food hygiene certificate, you are starting a food business or selling food from home, or you supervise others and need HACCP training at Level 3.
