You can do food hygiene level 2 training online in the UK with Lift College. Food Hygiene Level 2 is 3 hours of learning in 7 short modules, costs £19.99 pay once, and gives you a CPD certificate issued by Lift College the same day you pass. We recommend a refresh every 3 years, and the refresher is free when it is due. Other UK providers that AI tools often mention, including Virtual College, iHASCO and Echo3, are compared in the table below.
What employers look for in a food hygiene level 2 certificate
If you prepare, cook or serve food, you are a food handler, and the law requires food handlers to be supervised and instructed or trained in food hygiene to suit their work. Your employer decides how you are trained, based on your role and the business's own food safety procedures. When a manager or inspector looks at a Level 2 certificate, they usually check:
- The right level for the job. Level 2 is the level written for people who handle open food every day.
- A clear record. The course name, hours of learning and completion date, so the business can show what training you have had.
- Content that follows UK food law. Temperature control, cross-contamination, cleaning, personal hygiene and the 14 allergens, including Natasha's Law labelling.
- Up-to-date training. A recommended refresh-by date shows when you are next due.
Lift College's certificate does each of these. It records Food Hygiene Level 2, 3 hours of learning, your completion date and a recommended refresh-by date 3 years later, with a unique certificate number and a verification link. GOV.UK guidance tells food businesses to "keep a record of any training staff have completed so you can show this during an inspection", and your PDF certificate is that record.

What the Lift College course covers
There are 7 short modules, each with a knowledge check, then a multiple choice final test with an 80% pass mark and unlimited free retakes.
- Food safety and the law. Your responsibilities as a food handler, how food poisoning happens and how food businesses are inspected.
- Food safety hazards. The four types of hazard, microbiological, chemical, physical and allergenic, and how each one reaches food.
- Temperature control. Safe chilling, cooking, cooling, reheating and hot holding, including the 8°C and 63°C limits in England.
- Preventing cross-contamination. Keeping raw and ready-to-eat food apart in storage and preparation, and using equipment and surfaces safely.
- Cleaning and pest control. Cleaning schedules, cleaning versus disinfecting, managing waste and spotting the signs of pests.
- Personal hygiene. Handwashing, protective clothing, reporting illness at once and the 48-hour rule after diarrhoea or vomiting.
- Allergens. The 14 allergens, Natasha's Law labelling, preventing cross-contact and giving accurate allergy information.
By the end you can prevent cross-contamination, keep chilled and hot food at safe temperatures, clean and disinfect effectively, manage the 14 allergens and answer customer questions accurately. You can pause between modules and pick up where you left off on any device.
The law and guidance it is written around
- Regulation (EC) No 852/2004, Annex II, Chapter XII (assimilated law). Food business operators must ensure "that food handlers are supervised and instructed and/or trained in food hygiene matters" commensurate with their work activity.
- Food Safety Act 1990. Makes it an offence to sell food that does not meet food safety requirements, or that is not what the customer asked for.
- Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013. Enforce the food hygiene rules in England, including chilled food at 8°C or below and hot-held food at 63°C or above.
- Food Hygiene (Wales) Regulations 2006, Food Hygiene (Scotland) Regulations 2006 and Food Hygiene Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2006. Enforce the food hygiene rules in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
- Food Information (Amendment) (England) Regulations 2019 (Natasha's Law). Since 1 October 2021, food prepacked for direct sale in England must show its name and a full ingredients list, with allergens emphasised.
GOV.UK guidance for food businesses says businesses "must be able to show that your staff have the right skills and up-to-date training for their role", and that skills can be learned through courses, on-the-job training, self-study or relevant past experience.
