CPD guide

You can get free manual handling training. If your employer needs you to be trained, HSE says health and safety training must be free for employees and take place in working hours. HSE's own guidance and assessment tools are free to download, and some websites offer a free manual handling course online. HSE's guidance comes with no certificate, and free courses may charge for one. Paid courses from the providers we checked cost from £20 + VAT to £32.50 + VAT. At Lift College the Manual Handling Training course is 5 modules and 3 hours of learning for £19.99, pay once, with a same-day CPD certificate.

How manual handling training works, free or paid

The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 ask employers to avoid hazardous manual handling where they can, assess what cannot be avoided and reduce the risk. HSE's legal guidance on the regulations, L23, explains how to avoid, assess and reduce the risk of injury.

HSE is clear that a course is only part of the answer. Its training page says: "Training can be important in raising awareness and reducing risk, but it won't ensure safe manual handling on its own." It says training should be relevant to the work, and should cover risk factors and how injuries happen, mechanical aids, good handling technique, systems of work for your tasks, and "practical work so the trainer can identify anything the trainee is not doing safely and put it right". It also says technique training "should be tailored to the tasks the workers carry out".

So is an online course enough? Not on its own. HSE's training page does not mention online learning. An online course, free or paid, covers the knowledge. Your employer still needs to show you the loads, equipment and tasks in your own job and check your technique in practice.

Moving people is manual handling too. In care, the Skills for Health Level 2 Patient course page puts it plainly: "This course supports the practical training you need. It does not replace it." The same is true of the Lift College Moving and Handling of People Training: your employer completes the practical assessment with you.

Free options for manual handling training online

Your employer. HSE's guide for employers says: "Health and safety training should take place during working hours and must be free for employees." If your job involves lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling, ask your manager what training they provide.

HSE's free guidance. You can download these from HSE at no cost:

  • L23, Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, guidance on regulations (fourth edition, 2016).
  • INDG143, Manual handling at work, a leaflet for employers with practical advice and simple risk filters for lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling.
  • INDG383, the Manual Handling Assessment Charts (the MAC tool), which help identify high-risk handling tasks.

These are guidance, not a course, and do not come with a certificate.

NHS elearning for healthcare (elfh). The elfh Hub says its elearning "can be accessed for free, 24/7 by health and care professionals". It hosts a Moving and Handling Level 1 session that meets the learning outcomes for Moving and Handling Level 1 in the Core Skills Training Framework (England).

Free courses with an optional paid certificate. Alison offers a free Essential Safe Manual Handling Skills course (1.5 to 3 hours). Alison says "All learning on Alison is free" and that you can pay "a nominal fee" for a digital certificate. Its FAQ page does not show the price.

So what does paying add?

Free and paid courses both teach the theory. Neither replaces the practical, task-specific instruction HSE describes. What paying adds:

  • A certificate in your name. The paid courses in our table give you a certificate when you finish, which you can show a new employer or add to your CPD record.
  • A set price. In our table, the paid manual handling courses cost from £20 + VAT to £32.50 + VAT.
  • A test with a pass mark. You can see you have covered the knowledge before your employer checks your technique.

If your employer already trains you, start there. If you are job hunting, self-employed, or want a certificate of your own before you start, a paid course gives you that.

Work in care? Moving and Handling of People Training is 2 hours in 6 modules for £19.99, pay once, covering assessing the person and the task, slide sheets, hoists and slings, and banned techniques. Lift College recommends a refresh every 12 months, and the refresher is free.

Which should you choose?

Take the free route if your employer provides manual handling training, if you work in health or care and can use elfh, or if you only want to read HSE's guidance before a new job.

Pay for a course if you want a certificate in your own name, your employer has asked you to arrange training yourself, or you want a set test and a refresh date. Whichever you choose, expect your employer to check your technique on the tasks you do.
