CPD guide

You can do manual handling training online in the UK with Lift College. Manual Handling Training is 3 hours of learning across 5 short modules, covering what the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 expect workers to know, the TILEO factors and a step-by-step lifting technique. It costs £19.99, pay once, and you get a CPD certificate issued by Lift College the same day you pass, with a free refresher every 3 years. Other UK providers are compared in the table below.

What employers look for in an online manual handling certificate

Your employer decides what manual handling training you need, based on its own risk assessment of the handling tasks in your job. Under the 1992 Regulations, employers avoid hazardous manual handling where they can, assess what remains and reduce the risk, and training is part of how they do that. When an employer looks at an online certificate, these are the things that matter:

  • It records what you did. The certificate names the course, the hours of learning and the completion date.
  • It can be checked. A unique certificate number and a verification link let a supervisor or auditor confirm it quickly.
  • The content is current. It follows current UK law, naming the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 and the duties they set.
  • It is refreshed on schedule. A recommended refresh-by date shows when the next update is due, and training is updated when risks change.

Lift College's certificate does each of these. It records that you completed Manual Handling Training, shows 3 hours of learning, your completion date and a recommended refresh date 3 years later, and carries a unique certificate number and a verification link. It is issued as a PDF the same day you pass. Your employer then shows you the specific tasks and equipment in your job.

What the Lift College course covers

The course has 5 short modules, 3 hours in total, with a knowledge check after each one.

  1. What manual handling means: lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying and moving loads, and how injuries build up over time.
  2. The law: avoid, assess, reduce: your employer's duties under the 1992 Regulations and your duty to use the safe systems of work provided.
  3. Assessing risk with TILEO: the task, the individual, the load, the environment and other factors, and how each one changes the risk.
  4. Good handling technique: planning the lift, a stable stance, a good hold, keeping the load close and avoiding twisting.
  5. Pushing, pulling and aids: using trolleys and handling aids well, team lifts, and knowing when to stop and ask.

The final test is multiple choice, 80% to pass, with unlimited free retakes. By the end you can describe the avoid, assess, reduce approach, use TILEO to think through a handling task, plan a lift before you start and use the safe systems of work and equipment your employer provides.

The law and guidance it is written around

The Lift College course page cites three pieces of UK law.

  • Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992: regulation 4 requires employers to "so far as is reasonably practicable, avoid the need for his employees to undertake any manual handling operations at work which involve a risk of their being injured". Handling that cannot be avoided must be assessed and the risk reduced to the lowest level reasonably practicable. Under regulation 5, employees must make full and proper use of the system of work provided.
  • Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, section 2: employers must provide "such information, instruction, training and supervision as is necessary to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health and safety at work of his employees".
  • Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, regulation 13: employers must give adequate health and safety training when people start work and when they are exposed to new or increased risks.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I do manual handling training online in the UK?
Lift College offers Manual Handling Training online: 5 modules, 3 hours of learning, £19.99 pay once, with a CPD certificate issued by Lift College the same day you pass. Other UK providers are compared in the table above.
Is online manual handling training valid?
Your employer decides what training you need. This course covers what the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 expect workers to know, and your employer will show you the tasks and equipment in your job.
What does TILEO stand for?
Task, Individual, Load, Environment and Other factors. These match the factors the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 list for assessing handling risks.
Is there a maximum weight I can lift at work?
The regulations do not set a single legal weight limit. Your employer assesses each task, looking at the load, the task, the environment and the person doing it.
How often should manual handling training be refreshed?
Health and safety training should be repeated periodically where appropriate and updated when risks change. Lift College recommends refreshing this course every 3 years, and the refresher is free.
