What Level 1 maths unlocks
Functional Skills Level 1 is not a job in itself. It is a step: the level many entry roles, Level 2 apprenticeships and college courses ask for, and the starting point for Level 2.
Many entry roles ask for maths at Level 1 or above on the application. Requirements are set by each employer, so check the job you are applying for.
Many Level 2 apprenticeships and their providers commonly ask for Level 1 maths at entry or expect you to work towards it. For apprentices aged 19 and over, English and maths are optional under the 2026 to 2027 funding rules, though many providers still ask.
Many college courses at Level 1 and Level 2 commonly ask for Level 1 maths, or set a skills check at enrolment. Check the course you are applying for.
Level 1 builds the number, measures and data skills that Functional Skills Maths Level 2 and GCSE Maths assume, so you start Level 2 ready for it.
Requirements are set by each employer, college and apprenticeship and change; check the one you are applying for. Lift College does not publish salary figures for Functional Skills because the qualification is a requirement, not a role.
Try it free. Stay while it works for you. Leave whenever you like.
There is no course fee to find, no finance agreement to sign and no debt to worry about. Your first 7 days are free, then you pay for the month you are in, and every payment is covered by the 14-day money back guarantee. Prefer to pay today? Skip the trial and save up to 17%, with your price fixed for life, with the same 14-day guarantee.
You never sign a credit agreement with us, so there is no debt and nothing for anyone to chase. If you stop paying, you simply stop studying. No finance company, no loan and no letters.
What is Functional Skills Maths Level 1?
Functional Skills Maths Level 1 is a practical maths qualification at Level 1, the same level as GCSE grades 3 to 1 (D to G) on GOV.UK's list of qualification levels. At Lift College it is the TQUK Functional Skills Qualification in Maths at Level 1 (610/2623/2), awarded by Training Qualifications UK. You sit one exam in two sections in a single sitting: Section A is 30 minutes non calculator and Section B is 90 minutes with a calculator, graded pass or fail. Most learners study online with a named UK tutor for 8 to 16 weeks at 6 to 12 hours a week, from £39.99 a month when you pay today, with exam entry and one sitting included, or try it free for 7 days first.
The exam is set and marked by TQUK. You sit it onscreen from home with remote invigilation, or at a TQUK approved centre, when your tutor confirms you are ready, and results come in about six working days. 75% of the marks are for problem solving and 25% for underpinning skills, and the Department for Education content is written for work, study and life: money, percentages, measures, shape and data. At Level 1 the problems are straightforward, needing one step or a few connected steps, and some draw on two of the three content areas.
People take Level 1 when their maths is not yet at Level 2 standard, or when a job, a Level 2 apprenticeship or a college course asks for Level 1 maths. It is the step before Functional Skills Maths Level 2, the level many apprenticeships, nursing and teaching routes ask for, and Level 1 on its own does not meet a Level 2 or GCSE grade 4 requirement. Adults aged 19 or over in England who have not got a GCSE grade 4 or C in maths are legally entitled to fully funded maths courses up to Level 2 at colleges and training providers that offer them: see Functional Skills Level 2 funding and eligibility, or see every course in the Functional Skills hub.
How hard is the Level 1 exam?
It is a Level 1 qualification, the same level as GCSE grades 3 to 1 (D to G). A quarter of the marks are in Section A, where you cannot use a calculator, and the content includes fractions, decimals and percentages, simple interest and discounts in steps of 5%, area, perimeter and volume of simple shapes, the mean and range, and simple probability. TQUK does not publish a fixed pass mark: there is no pass mark per section, and your combined mark must meet the pass mark set for that paper. If you do not pass, you can resit as many times as you need (a resit fee applies). Your tutor sets a timed mock so you only book the exam when you are ready.

- Are 16 or over; most learners are adults
Think again if
- You already work at Level 2 standard in maths; take Functional Skills Maths Level 2 instead
- The course or employer you are applying to asks for GCSE Maths grade 4 or Level 2 maths; Level 1 does not meet that
- You need Entry Level maths first; ask an adviser for a free skills check
There is no placement. You sit one on-screen exam when your tutor confirms you are ready.
- Booked on the TQUK platform when your tutor confirms you are ready
- Remote invigilation from home, or a TQUK-approved centre
- A computer with a webcam and a quiet room for remote invigilation

This Ofqual-regulated TQUK qualification is one 120-minute sitting, and online you use the calculator built into the exam platform for Section B. Pass or fail, with the pass mark set by TQUK.
Is Functional Skills Maths Level 1 the same with every awarding body?
Yes, at the same level. City & Guilds, Pearson Edexcel, NCFE, Open Awards and TQUK all assess the same Department for Education content, so a Level 1 pass carries the same weight whichever body issues it. Lift College learners sit the TQUK exam.
What can I do after Functional Skills Maths Level 1?
Most learners go on to Functional Skills Maths Level 2, the level many apprenticeships, nursing and teaching routes and employers ask for. TQUK also lists GCSE Mathematics and further study at a suitable level as progression routes.
Is this the qualification employers ask for?
Functional Skills Maths Level 1 is a Level 1 qualification, the same level as GCSE grades 3 to 1 (D to G). Many employers, college courses and Level 2 apprenticeships commonly ask for Level 1 maths at entry. It does not meet a requirement for GCSE Maths grade 4 or Level 2 maths; for that, take Functional Skills Maths Level 2. Check the one you are applying for.
What does the price include?
One price covers the full course: a named UK tutor, marking in 5 to 7 working days, AI Study Support, and exam entry and one sitting of your TQUK exam, booked for you. A resit fee applies only if you need another attempt.
What is Pay today?
The default is a free 7-day trial with your first payment on day 8. If you would rather pay today, skip the trial and save up to 17%, with your price fixed for life. Your 14-day money-back guarantee still applies: change your mind for any reason within 14 days and we refund the full payment.

Who issues the certificate?
Training Qualifications UK (TQUK) issues the certificate. Lift College is a TQUK recognised centre.
What is Functional Skills Maths Level 1?
Functional Skills Maths Level 1 is a practical maths qualification at Level 1, the same level as GCSE grades 3 to 1 (D to G) on GOV.UK's list of qualification levels. At Lift College it is the TQUK qualification 610/2623/2, assessed by one exam in two sections: 30 minutes non calculator and 90 minutes with a calculator, graded pass or fail. Most learners take 8 to 16 weeks, from £39.99 a month when you pay today, with exam entry and one sitting included, or try it free for 7 days first.
How long is the Functional Skills Maths Level 1 exam?
The TQUK exam is 120 minutes in one continuous sitting: Section A is 30 minutes without a calculator and Section B is 90 minutes with a calculator. Section A carries 25% of the marks and Section B 75%. Results come in about six working days.
What is Functional Skills Maths Level 1 equivalent to?
Functional Skills Maths Level 1 is at Level 1 on GOV.UK's list of qualification levels, the same level as GCSE grades 3 to 1 (D to G). It is not a GCSE, and it is not a Level 2 qualification, so it does not meet a request for a GCSE grade 4 or for Level 2 maths. It is the step before Functional Skills Maths Level 2, and many employers, college courses and apprenticeships ask for Level 1 maths at entry; check the one you are applying for.
Is Functional Skills Level 1 equivalent to a GCSE?
It is at the same level as GCSE grades 3 to 1 (D to G), but it is not a GCSE. Where an employer, college or apprenticeship asks for a GCSE grade 4 (C) or a Level 2 in maths, you need Level 2, either GCSE Maths at grade 4 or Functional Skills Maths Level 2. Level 1 is the usual step towards that. For a fuller answer, see what Functional Skills Level 1 is equivalent to.
What topics are in Functional Skills Maths Level 1?
Three content areas, the same for every awarding body because they follow the Department for Education subject content: using numbers and the number system, using common measures, shape and space, and handling information and data. Numbers covers large numbers up to one million, negative numbers, fractions, decimals and percentages (including simple increases and decreases in steps of 5%), simple ratio and direct proportion, and simple formulae in words. Measures, shape and space covers simple interest and discounts in multiples of 5%, converting units, scales on maps and drawings, area and perimeter of shapes made from rectangles, volume of cubes and cuboids, and angles. Handling information and data covers tables and charts, grouped data, the mean and range, and simple probability. Problem solving runs through all three and carries 75% of the marks.
Can I use a calculator in Functional Skills Maths Level 1?
In Section B, yes: the 90 minute section allows a calculator, and it carries 75% of the marks. Section A, the first 30 minutes, is non calculator and carries 25%. If you sit the exam on screen you use the calculator built into the TQUK platform; on a paper exam you bring a basic, non scientific calculator.
How hard is Functional Skills Maths Level 1?
It is set at Level 1, the same level as GCSE grades 3 to 1 (D to G), and the content is everyday maths: number, money, measures, shape and data. The problems are straightforward: each needs one step, or a few connected steps, and some draw on two of the three content areas at once. A quarter of the marks are in the non calculator section. There is no pass mark per section: your combined mark must meet the pass mark set for that paper. You can resit as many times as you need (a resit fee applies), and your tutor sets a timed mock so you only book the exam when you are ready.
Can I do Functional Skills Maths Level 1 for free?
You can if you qualify for funding, through a college or adult learning service rather than Lift College. In England, adults aged 19 or over who do not hold a GCSE grade 4 (old grade C) or equivalent in maths have a legal entitlement to fully funded maths study up to Level 2, and that funding is delivered by colleges and adult learning services, not by private online providers. Lift College's online course is self-funded, from £39.99 a month when you pay today, and every plan starts with a 7-day free trial, with nothing charged until day 8. The entitlement covers study up to Level 2, so it includes Level 1: check whether you qualify in Functional Skills Level 2 funding and eligibility.
Are there Functional Skills Maths Level 1 past papers?
Yes, mostly as official sample and practice assessments, because live papers are not released the way GCSE papers are. NCFE publishes Level 1 maths sample and practice assessments with mark schemes that run in your browser, VTCT Skills publishes Level 1 maths practice exams, and City & Guilds publishes a Level 1 maths example exam and familiarisation test. All follow the same Department for Education content, so they are useful whichever awarding body you sit with. On the Lift College course your tutor marks your practice papers and sets a timed mock exam before your TQUK exam is booked.
Should I do Functional Skills Maths Level 1 or Level 2?
Take Level 2 if a job, apprenticeship, university or college course asks for Level 2 maths or a GCSE grade 4, and you can already work with percentages, fractions, area and averages with some confidence. Take Level 1 if you are not yet at that standard, or if the route you are applying for asks for Level 1. Level 2 adds topics such as compound interest, any percentage change, circles and cylinders, the mean of grouped data and the probability of combined events, and its problems use all three content areas. An adviser can tell you which level suits you after a free skills check.
Can I go straight to Functional Skills Maths Level 2?
Yes. There is no rule that you must pass Level 1 first, and you can enrol on Functional Skills Maths Level 2 directly. Lift College recommends Level 1 standard before you start Level 2, so if your maths is rusty, Level 1 builds the number, measures and data skills that Level 2 assumes.
How much does Functional Skills Maths Level 1 cost online?
Functional Skills Maths Level 1 with Lift College is £39.99 a month when you pay today, with exam entry and one sitting of the TQUK exam included, or £0 today on the 7-day free trial and then £44.99 a month. Most learners take 8 to 16 weeks, so about £80 to £160 in all if you cancel once you have your result. Checked on their own websites on 1 November 2026: Open Study College and Pass Functional Skills charge £355 to £429 for the course, paid in full or in instalments. With Lift College you can start for £0 today.
Can I start Functional Skills Maths Level 1 today?
Yes. You can start Functional Skills Maths Level 1 with Lift College today on the 7-day free trial: you pay £0 today, start the course with your named UK tutor, and nothing is charged until day 8. Prefer to pay today? Skip the trial and save up to 17%, with your price fixed for life. The 14-day money back guarantee applies either way.
What is a Level 1 maths qualification?
A Level 1 maths qualification is at the same level as GCSE maths grades 3 to 1 (D to G) on GOV.UK's list of qualification levels. Functional Skills Maths Level 1 is the one most often asked for at entry to jobs, Level 2 apprenticeships and college courses. Lift College teaches the TQUK Functional Skills Maths Level 1 (610/2623/2) online, with the exam included.
How do I pass Functional Skills Maths Level 1?
Practise problem solving, because 75% of the marks are problem solving and 25% underpinning skills, and practise without a calculator for Section A. Your named tutor marks your practice papers in 5 to 7 working days and sets a timed mock, and your exam is only booked when you are ready. If you miss, you can resit (a resit fee applies).
A UK adviser calls you back within 2 working hours, Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm. No sales script.
