About this course

Electrical Safety Training

You can do electrical safety training online in the UK with Lift College's Electrical Safety Training course. It is 1.5 hours of learning in 4 short modules, covering how electricity injures and kills, the common causes of electrical accidents at work, what the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require of employers and employees, how fuses, residual current devices and earthing protect you, how to use, check and maintain portable electrical equipment safely, and what to do if someone receives an electric shock or an electrical fire starts. It costs £19.99, pay once, and your CPD certificate issued by Lift College is ready the same day you pass. Lift College recommends a refresh every 3 years, and the refresher is free.

Electricity cannot be seen, heard or smelt, and the ordinary 230 volt mains supply in every UK workplace is enough to kill. Each year people are killed and many more are burned or shocked at work, usually through damaged cables and plugs, overloaded sockets, work near overhead or buried lines, or equipment that was never checked. Electrical faults also start fires. Almost all of these incidents trace back to something a trained person would have spotted, which is why the regulations put the duty to prevent danger on everyone at work, not only electricians.

This course covers what the regulations and HSE guidance expect of people who use or manage electrical equipment but are not electrically qualified. You learn how electricity harms the body, the main hazards in offices, shops, kitchens, warehouses, care settings and sites, what the law requires, how the protective devices in a circuit work, how to carry out a user check of a plug, cable and appliance, when equipment needs a formal inspection or test by a competent person, how to work safely near electricity, and the right first response to a shock, burn or electrical fire. It is written for non-electricians across the UK. It does not qualify anyone to carry out electrical work, repairs or portable appliance testing.

By the end you can
  • Explain how electricity injures the body and the factors that decide how severe a shock is
  • Identify the common electrical hazards in ordinary workplaces, from damaged leads and overloaded sockets to wet conditions and overhead lines
  • Describe what the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require of employers and of everyone who works with or near electricity
  • Explain how fuses, circuit breakers, residual current devices, earthing and insulation protect people
  • Carry out a visual user check of a plug, cable and appliance before use and know what to do with a faulty item
  • Recognise when equipment needs a formal visual inspection or combined inspection and test by a competent person, and what records to keep
  • Describe how to work safely near electrical equipment, including isolation and the limits of what a non-electrician may do
  • Apply the correct first response to an electric shock, electrical burn or electrical fire
Modules

4 short modules, 1.5 hours in total.

  1. How electricity harms and where the dangers are

Voltage, current and resistance in plain words. Electric shock, burns, arcing, fire and explosion, and the factors that make a shock worse. Common hazards: damaged cables and plugs, overloaded sockets and adaptors, wet or dusty conditions, trailing leads, DIY repairs, work near overhead and buried services.

    Knowledge check
  2. Electricity and the law

The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, the duty to prevent danger and the meaning of so far as is reasonably practicable. Who the regulations cover, including employees and the self employed. HSE guidance HSR25, HSG85 and INDG236. How the Health and Safety at Work Act and PUWER apply to electrical equipment.

    Knowledge check
  3. Protection, user checks and maintenance

How fuses, miniature circuit breakers, residual current devices, earthing, double insulation and reduced voltage protect people. User checks before each use, formal visual inspections and combined inspection and testing of portable equipment, sensible frequencies based on risk, labelling, taking faulty items out of use and keeping records.

    Knowledge check
  4. Working safely and emergencies

Safe use of extension leads, adaptors and equipment in wet or outdoor conditions. Isolating equipment before cleaning or clearing a blockage, and what a non-electrician must not attempt. What to do if someone is shocked: switching off, not touching the casualty while live, calling for help and first aid. Electrical fires and the right extinguisher. Reporting under RIDDOR.

    Knowledge check
  5. Final test and your certificate

Multiple choice, 80% to pass, unlimited attempts. Your CPD certificate is issued by Lift College the day you pass.

The law

The law this course supports

Electricity at Work Regulations 1989

Applies in England, Wales and Scotland. Employers, the self employed and employees must prevent danger from electricity so far as is reasonably practicable. Electrical systems must be constructed and maintained to prevent danger, work near live conductors must be controlled, and no one may do work that needs technical knowledge or experience unless they have it or are properly supervised. Northern Ireland has the same rules in the Electricity at Work Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1991.

Read the legislation →

HSE HSR25: Memorandum of guidance on the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989

The HSE's official guidance on each regulation. It explains what the duties mean in practice, including maintenance, working near live equipment and competence. It is guidance rather than law, but following it is a good way to show you have met the regulations.

Read the legislation →

HSE HSG85: Electricity at work, safe working practices

Guidance for managers and supervisors on planning electrical work safely, isolating equipment, proving it is dead and deciding who is competent to do what. It is aimed at those who control electrical work, and makes clear that live working is only justified in narrow circumstances.

Read the legislation →

HSE INDG236: Maintaining portable electric equipment in low-risk environments

Short HSE guidance on keeping portable and movable equipment safe in offices, shops and similar workplaces. It explains user checks, formal visual inspections and when combined inspection and testing is needed, and makes clear that the law does not require a fixed testing interval; frequency should be based on risk.

Read the legislation →

Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974

Applies in England, Wales and Scotland. Employers must provide and maintain plant and systems of work that are safe, and give the information, instruction, training and supervision needed to keep employees safe, so far as is reasonably practicable (section 2). Northern Ireland has the same duty in the Health and Safety at Work (Northern Ireland) Order 1978.

FAQ

Questions about Electrical Safety Training

Is online electrical safety training valid?

Your employer decides what training you need, guided by its risk assessment. The Electricity at Work Regulations require anyone who works with or near electricity to have the knowledge to avoid danger, and an awareness course like this covers that for non-electricians. It does not make you an electrician and does not qualify you to carry out electrical work, repairs or portable appliance testing; those need recognised electrical training and assessment.

Who needs electrical safety training?

Anyone who uses electrical equipment at work, which in practice is almost everyone, and especially supervisors, managers, facilities, caretaking, cleaning and maintenance staff who are not electrically qualified. It is also useful for people who decide what inspections and tests a workplace needs.

How often should electrical safety training be refreshed?

The regulations do not set an interval, but knowledge must be kept up to date as equipment, tasks and workplaces change. Lift College recommends refreshing every 3 years, or sooner if your role or the equipment you use changes. The refresher is free.

What does this course not cover?

It does not teach you to carry out any electrical work, from changing a socket to wiring a plug on fixed installations, and it does not qualify you to do portable appliance testing. Those tasks need a competent person with the right electrical training and, for testing, the right instruments. The course tells you how to recognise danger, do simple user checks and know when to call that competent person.

How do I check an appliance before I use it?

Look at the cable for cuts, kinks, taped repairs or exposed wires, the plug for cracks, bent pins or signs of overheating, and the appliance for damage, loose parts or burn marks. Check that the cable is gripped firmly where it enters the plug and the appliance, and that the equipment is suitable for where it will be used. If anything is wrong, do not use it, label it and report it. The course walks through this check step by step.

How long do I keep access?

You keep your access for as long as Lift College offers the course, and never less than 3 years from the day you buy. Your certificate PDF is yours to keep.

What is the free refresher?

Lift College recommends refreshing this course every 3 years. When your date comes round, you can retake the latest version free and get a new certificate. We email you 30 days before.
