About this course

Infection Prevention and Control Training

You can do infection prevention and control training online in the UK with Lift College's Infection Prevention and Control Training course. It is 1.5 hours of learning in 5 short modules, covering how infections spread, the chain of infection, standard precautions, hand hygiene, personal protective equipment, cleaning and decontamination, safe handling of waste, linen and sharps, and what to do in an outbreak. It costs £19.99, pay once, and your CPD certificate issued by Lift College is ready the same day you pass. Lift College recommends a refresh every 12 months, and the refresher is free.

Infections pass between people, surfaces and equipment every day, and in care, health and childcare settings the people most at risk are the ones least able to fight them off. Good infection prevention is not complicated, but it has to be done the same way by everyone, every time. Regulators expect staff to be trained in it.

This course covers the standard precautions every worker in a care, health or childcare setting needs. You learn how infection spreads and where the chain can be broken, when and how to wash your hands, when to use gloves, aprons and masks and how to put them on and take them off, how cleaning and decontamination work, how to handle waste, linen and sharps safely, and how to recognise and respond to an outbreak. It is written for settings across the UK.

By the end you can
  • Describe how infections spread and the six links in the chain of infection
  • Apply standard precautions in every interaction, not just with people known to be infected
  • Wash and sanitise your hands at the right moments using the right technique
  • Select, put on, remove and dispose of personal protective equipment correctly
  • Clean and decontaminate surfaces and equipment using the right products and colour coding
  • Handle waste, linen and sharps safely and deal with spills of blood and body fluids
  • Recognise the signs of an outbreak and know who to tell and what to do

Which online infection control certificate do employers accept?

Your employer decides what infection control training you need. In England the Health and Social Care Act 2008 Code of Practice expects registered providers to make sure staff are trained in infection prevention and control, and the Care Quality Commission inspects against it. Health and safety law across the UK, including COSHH, expects employers to control the risk from biological agents at work. A good certificate records the course, hours, completion date and refresh date, and can be verified. The content should cover the chain of infection, hand hygiene, personal protective equipment, cleaning and waste, and standard precautions.

Lift College's certificate does each of these: it names Infection Prevention and Control Training, shows 1.5 hours of learning, your completion date and a refresh date 12 months on, with a unique number and verification link. The refresher is free.

FAQ

Questions about Infection Prevention and Control Training

Is online infection prevention and control training valid?

Your employer decides what training you need. This course covers the knowledge regulators expect of staff in care, health and childcare settings. Your employer will add the policies, products and procedures for your own setting, and may observe your hand hygiene and PPE technique.

How often should infection prevention and control training be done?

Most care and health employers expect an annual refresher, and inspectors look for it. Lift College recommends every 12 months, and the refresher is free.

What are standard precautions?

The basic measures used with every person, every time, whether or not they are known to have an infection: hand hygiene, PPE, safe handling of sharps and waste, cleaning, and respiratory hygiene. They protect you and the people you care for.

When should I use hand sanitiser and when soap and water?

Sanitiser is fine for visibly clean hands. Use soap and water when hands are visibly dirty, after using the toilet, and when caring for someone with diarrhoea or vomiting, because sanitiser does not kill norovirus or Clostridioides difficile spores.

Does this course cover the Care Certificate standard?

It covers the knowledge in Standard 15 (infection prevention and control). Your employer still observes you in practice. If you are new to care, the Care Certificate course covers all 15 standards.

How long do I keep access?

You keep your access for as long as Lift College offers the course, and never less than 3 years from the day you buy. Your certificate PDF is yours to keep.

What is the free refresher?

Lift College recommends refreshing this course every 12 months. When your date comes round, you can retake the latest version free and get a new certificate. We email you 30 days before.
