PPE Training
You can do PPE training online in the UK with Lift College's PPE Training course. It is 1 hour of learning in 4 short modules, covering what personal protective equipment is and where it sits in the hierarchy of controls, what the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 require and how the 2022 amendment extended them to more workers, how to assess the need for PPE and choose equipment that fits the person and the hazard, and how to use, store, maintain and replace it so that it keeps protecting. It costs £19.99, pay once, and your CPD certificate issued by Lift College is ready the same day you pass. Lift College recommends a refresh every 3 years, and the refresher is free.
PPE is the last line of defence. It only protects the person wearing it, it only works if it fits and is worn correctly, and it fails quietly when it is damaged, dirty or the wrong type for the hazard. Across UK workplaces people lose their sight, hearing, skin and lungs to hazards that the right equipment, worn properly, would have stopped. Employers who provide PPE that does not fit, charge workers for it, or fail to show people how to use it are breaking the law.
This course covers what the regulations and HSE guidance L25 expect of employers and of the people who wear PPE. You learn when PPE is the right control and when it is not, how to assess what is needed for a task, how to choose equipment for the head, eyes, ears, lungs, hands, feet and body, why fit and compatibility matter, including for women, people of different builds and people with religious dress or facial hair, and how to store, check, clean and replace equipment and keep the records. It is written for workers, supervisors and managers across the UK.
- Explain what personal protective equipment is and where it sits in the hierarchy of controls
- Describe what the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 require and who they protect after the 2022 amendment
- Identify the hazards in a task that call for PPE and the types of equipment that protect against them
- Describe how to select PPE that is suitable for the hazard, the task, the environment and the person
- Recognise why fit, comfort and compatibility between items decide whether PPE actually protects
- Apply the correct way to put on, wear, remove, store and clean common items of PPE
- Recognise when PPE is damaged, out of date or no longer suitable and what to do about it
- Explain the duties of employees to wear PPE as instructed and report loss or defects
4 short modules, 1 hour in total.

Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992
Applies in England, Wales and Scotland. Where a risk cannot be adequately controlled in other ways, employers must provide suitable PPE, assess it, keep it maintained and stored properly, give information, instruction and training on its use, and make sure it is used. Employees must use the PPE as trained and report loss or defects. Northern Ireland has equivalent rules in the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1993.
Read the legislation →Personal Protective Equipment at Work (Amendment) Regulations 2022
From 6 April 2022 the duties under the 1992 regulations were extended from employees to limb (b) workers: people who do casual or irregular work for an organisation under a contract but are not self employed in business on their own account. Employers must now assess, provide and maintain PPE for these workers in the same way, free of charge.
Read the legislation →HSE L25: Personal protective equipment at work, guidance on the regulations
The HSE's guidance on each regulation. It explains how to assess the need for PPE, choose suitable equipment that fits, make sure items are compatible, maintain and replace them and train the people who use them. Following it is a good way to show you have met the regulations.
Read the legislation →Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, section 2
Applies in England, Wales and Scotland. Employers must provide safe systems of work and the information, instruction, training and supervision needed to keep employees safe, so far as is reasonably practicable. Northern Ireland has the same duty in the Health and Safety at Work (Northern Ireland) Order 1978.
Read the legislation →Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, section 9
An employer cannot charge an employee for anything done or provided to meet a specific health and safety requirement. PPE required by the regulations must therefore be provided free, and workers cannot be asked to pay a deposit or have the cost deducted from pay.

What our learners say
Stories from Lift College learners on our qualifications, in their own words.
“I had been a care assistant for four years without a formal qualification. Lift College made the whole process straightforward, my assessor visited regularly and I completed my Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care in just over a year. I was promoted to senior care worker the month after I qualified.”
“My employer was clear, I needed GCSE English to move into a supervisory role. Lift College helped me find the right exam board and an exam centre five minutes from home. Passed grade 4. Got the promotion.”
“My employer needed me to have Level 2 maths before they could register me on the Level 3 apprenticeship programme. Lift College was fast, the tutor was brilliant, and I resit my maths once after a near-miss and passed the second time. The whole thing took twelve weeks.”
Questions about PPE Training
Is online PPE training valid?
Your employer decides what training you need, based on its risk assessment. The regulations require employers to give adequate information, instruction and training to anyone who has to use PPE, and an online course is an accepted way to cover the knowledge. Your employer may add a practical demonstration for specific items, and tight fitting respiratory protection always needs a face fit test for the individual wearer.
Who needs PPE training?
Anyone who wears PPE at work and anyone who issues, selects or manages it. That includes workers in construction, manufacturing, warehousing, agriculture, catering, cleaning, care and healthcare, and the supervisors and managers responsible for them. Since April 2022 the duties also cover limb (b) workers such as casual and agency staff.
How often should PPE training be refreshed?
The regulations do not fix an interval, but training must be adequate and kept up to date as equipment, tasks and risks change. Lift College recommends refreshing every 3 years, or sooner when you start using a new type of PPE. The refresher is free.
What does this course not cover?
It is an awareness course. It does not replace the face fit test that each wearer of a tight fitting respirator must have, the manufacturer's instructions for a particular item, or the task specific training for harnesses and fall arrest equipment. Your employer decides what else is needed for the PPE you use.
How do I check that PPE fits properly?
Fit means the item covers what it is meant to cover, stays in place while you work and does not interfere with other PPE or with the task. The course explains how to check fit for helmets, eye protection, gloves, footwear and clothing, why one size does not fit all, and why respirators that seal to the face need a formal fit test. If PPE does not fit, tell your employer; they must provide something that does.
How long do I keep access?
You keep your access for as long as Lift College offers the course, and never less than 3 years from the day you buy. Your certificate PDF is yours to keep.
What is the free refresher?
Lift College recommends refreshing this course every 3 years. When your date comes round, you can retake the latest version free and get a new certificate. We email you 30 days before.
Does it count towards my CPD?
Yes. The course is 1 hour of learning, shown on your CPD certificate issued by Lift College, so you can log the hours in your CPD record.
Can I get my money back?
Yes. Ask within 14 days of paying and we refund you in full.
Can my employer pay?
Yes. Your receipt shows the course, the date and the amount paid, and you can pass it to your employer. Buying for a team? Open a free organisation account: every course is £16.99, and you can pay by card or invoice with your PO.
Can my team do this course in another language?
Yes, on an organisation account with 10 or more places. Your team can study PPE Training in Polish, Romanian, Punjabi, Urdu or Welsh, prepared within 1 working day of your order. The final test and the certificate stay in the English course name, so the certificate is the one every employer recognises. Tell us the languages you need when you order or ask for a quote.
