What it unlocks

What Level 2 maths unlocks

Functional Skills Level 2 is not a job in itself. It is the piece of paper that removes a barrier. These are the routes that ask for it.

Apprenticeships

Apprentices aged 16 to 18 on Level 3 and higher apprenticeships must hold or achieve Level 2 maths and English before they can complete. For apprentices aged 19 and over, English and maths are optional under the 2026 to 2027 funding rules, though many providers ask for them at entry.

University and Access to HE

Accepted by many colleges and Access to HE providers, including Lift College, and by some universities in place of GCSE Maths; others ask for GCSE Maths by name, so check.

Teaching and childcare

Level 3 Early Years Educator and teaching assistant posts, and initial teacher training, ask for Level 2 maths.

Nursing, NHS and public services

Many nursing degrees, NHS support roles and police forces accept Functional Skills Level 2 as the maths requirement; some ask for GCSE Maths by name, so check.

Requirements are set by each employer, university or apprenticeship standard and change; check the one you are applying for. Lift College does not publish salary figures for Functional Skills because the qualification is a requirement, not a role.

What it is

What is Functional Skills Maths Level 2?

Functional Skills Maths Level 2 is a practical maths qualification at Level 2, the same level as GCSE grades 9 to 4 on GOV.UK's list of qualification levels. At Lift College it is the TQUK Functional Skills Qualification in Maths at Level 2 (610/2624/4), awarded by Training Qualifications UK. You sit one exam in two sections in a single sitting: Section A is 30 minutes non calculator and Section B is 90 minutes with a basic calculator, graded pass or fail. Most learners study online with a named UK tutor for 8 to 16 weeks at 6 to 12 hours a week, from £33.99 a month when you start now, with exam entry and one sitting included, or try it free for 7 days first.

The exam is set and marked by TQUK. You sit it onscreen from home with remote invigilation, or at a TQUK approved centre, when your tutor confirms you are ready, and results come in about six working days. Ofqual's rules give 75% of the marks to problem solving and 25% to underpinning skills, and the Department for Education content is written for work, study and life: money and budgeting, percentages, ratio, measures, shape and data.

People take it to meet a "Level 2 maths" requirement for a job, an apprenticeship or further study. Under the 2026 to 2027 apprenticeship funding rules, English and maths are mandatory for apprentices aged 16 to 18, and optional for apprentices aged 19 and over. Many colleges and Access to HE providers accept it, and some universities accept it in place of GCSE Maths while others ask for GCSE by name, so check the course you are applying for. Adults aged 19 or over in England who have not got a GCSE grade 4 or C in English or maths are legally entitled to fully funded English and maths courses up to Level 2 at colleges and training providers that offer them; ask the provider which qualifications it offers, which may include Functional Skills: see Functional Skills Level 2 funding and eligibility. To compare it with GCSE, read what is Level 2 maths?, or see every course in the Functional Skills hub.

How hard is the exam?

It is a Level 2 qualification, the same level as GCSE grades 9 to 4, so it asks for a solid grasp of everyday maths. A quarter of the marks are in Section A, where you cannot use a calculator, and the content includes percentage change, compound interest, area and volume, scale drawings and the probability of combined events. TQUK does not publish a fixed pass mark: there is no pass mark per section, and your combined mark must meet the pass mark set for that paper. If you do not pass, you can resit as many times as you need (a resit fee applies). Lift College recommends Level 1 standard before you start, and your tutor sets a timed mock so you only book the exam when you are ready.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Functional Skills Maths Level 2 equivalent to GCSE maths?

It is a Level 2 qualification, the same level as GCSE grades 9 to 4 on GOV.UK's list of qualification levels, but it is not a GCSE. Employers, colleges and apprenticeship funding rules commonly accept it where a Level 2 in maths is asked for; some universities and courses ask for GCSE Mathematics by name, so check the one you are applying for.

Do universities accept Functional Skills Level 2?

Yes. Some UK universities accept this Ofqual regulated TQUK qualification in place of GCSE Maths, and so do many Access to HE providers, including Lift College. Some courses require GCSE Mathematics specifically. Check the one you are applying for. The qualification number is 610/2624/4. See the acceptance table by university, profession and apprenticeship.

How fast can I complete Functional Skills Maths Level 2?

Most learners take 8 to 16 weeks, studying 6 to 12 hours a week, with a named UK tutor. This Ofqual-regulated TQUK qualification has 55 guided learning hours. You sit one on-screen exam when your tutor confirms you are ready.

Is the exam online or at a test centre?

Both. The on-screen TQUK exam can be taken with remote invigilation from home, or at a TQUK-approved centre. Paper-based entry is available with ten working days' notice. This Ofqual-regulated TQUK qualification is one 120-minute sitting. Pass or fail, with the pass mark set by TQUK.

Is Functional Skills Maths Level 2 Ofqual-regulated?

Yes. The TQUK Functional Skills Qualification in Maths at Level 2 is an Ofqual-regulated TQUK qualification. The qualification number is 610/2624/4. It is on the Ofqual register. Training Qualifications UK sets and marks the exam, and Lift College is a TQUK recognised centre.

Is this the qualification employers ask for?

Functional Skills Maths Level 2 is accepted in place of GCSE Maths grade 4 by many apprenticeships, universities and employers. Some courses require GCSE Mathematics specifically. Check the one you are applying for.

What does the price include?

One price covers the full course: a named UK tutor, marking in 5 to 7 working days, AI Study Support, and exam entry and one sitting of your TQUK exam, booked for you. A resit fee applies only if you need another attempt.

What is Start now?

The default is a free 7-day trial with your first payment on day 8. If you would rather start now, you pay today instead and every payment is 15% lower for life. Your 14-day money-back guarantee still applies: change your mind for any reason within 14 days and we refund the full payment.

What age do I need to be?

You need to be 16 or over. No formal entry requirements. TQUK sets no minimum age; the course is designed for learners 16 and over. Level 1 standard recommended before starting.

What comes after this?

Most people take this because an apprenticeship, a university place or a job asks for Level 2 maths. Functional Skills English Level 2 is the pair to it.

Can I pay annually?

Yes. Start now and save 15% for life: £33.99 a month or £346.79 a year (after a 7-day free trial: £39.99 a month or £407.99 a year). The 7-day free trial and 14-day money back apply either way.
