Is the Understanding Autism Level 3 certificate regulated?
Yes. The TQUK Level 3 Certificate in Understanding Autism (RQF) is on the Ofqual register at Level 3, qualification number 603/3203/7. It is 19 credits, 152 guided learning hours and 190 hours total qualification time. TQUK issues the certificate, and Lift College is a TQUK recognised centre.
How long does it take?
Many learners finish in 4 to 6 months. The qualification is 152 guided learning hours and 190 hours in total once your own reading and writing time is included. There is no timetable and no fixed exam date, so you move on to the next unit as soon as your work is marked.
How is it assessed?
By a portfolio of evidence. For each unit you complete written assignments and workbook questions, your Lift tutor marks them against the TQUK assessment criteria, and TQUK externally quality assures the results. Every learning outcome must be met, and the result is pass or fail. At Level 3 your answers need more explanation and analysis than at Level 2, and your tutor's feedback helps you get there.
Are there any exams?
No. There are no exams and no timed tests. Every unit is assessed through the written work in your portfolio, and if a piece needs more work your tutor tells you what to add and you resubmit.
What are the entry requirements?
You need to be 16 or over. The course and all of the assessments are in English, so you need to be able to read and write in English.
What does it cost?
One price covers the whole qualification: every unit, your named UK tutor, marking and written feedback, AI Study Support, your TQUK registration and your TQUK certificate. You can pay monthly or in full, and the current prices are shown on this page. You can start with a 7-day free trial, and the 14-day money back guarantee applies either way. Paying today, it is £39.99 a month or £359.99 in full. After the 7-day free trial, it is £49.99 a month or £499.99 in full.
Can my employer pay?
Yes. Employers can open an organisation account with Lift College, enrol one or more members of staff and pay by invoice, and organisation accounts get 10% off. If you would rather keep it separate from work, you can pay for yourself and study in your own time. An organisation place is £449.99, 10% off the £499.99 price, paid by invoice.
What can I do after this qualification?
You can use the certificate in the role you have now, or as evidence of your understanding when you apply for senior support, learning support or care roles. TQUK names Level 4 qualifications in adult care, health promotion and occupational health as progression routes, and Level 3 options including the Diploma in Adult Care, the Diploma in Healthcare Support and the Certificate in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care.
Do I need the Level 2 certificate first?
No. You can start Level 3 without it. If you are new to autism, the Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Autism gives you the foundations first and makes Level 3 easier to approach. If you already support autistic people, Level 3 is usually the better fit.
What is the difference between Level 2 and Level 3 Understanding Autism?
Level 2 is four units on what autism is, sensory experience, family and environment, and good practice. Level 3 is five units and 190 hours in total, and adds the history of autism research, formal diagnosis and interventions, your own duty to safeguard, encouraging communication and social interaction, interpreting behaviour, proactive and reactive behaviour support, the media, resilience and the barriers autistic people face. The written work asks for more explanation and analysis.
Does the Level 3 autism course cover positive behaviour support?
Yes, as knowledge. The unit Autism spectrum conditions and behaviour covers how to interpret behaviour and how to support positive behaviour both proactively and reactively. It does not train you in physical intervention; your employer provides any training that your role needs.
Is Level 3 autism useful for teaching assistants?
Yes. Many teaching assistants and learning support assistants take it to support autistic pupils with more confidence, particularly the units on communication, behaviour and barriers. Schools decide what qualifications a post needs, and this certificate sits alongside a teaching assistant qualification rather than replacing one.
Will this course let me diagnose autism?
No. Autism is diagnosed by qualified clinicians after a formal assessment. The course explains the role of formal diagnosis and interventions, so you understand the process and can support someone through it.
