AQA GCSE Biology (specification 8461) is assessed by two written papers, each 1 hour 45 minutes and worth 100 marks (50% each). Paper 1 covers cell biology, organisation, infection and response, and bioenergetics; Paper 2 covers homeostasis and response, inheritance, variation and evolution, and ecology. There are ten required practicals, examined inside the written papers, and you sit both papers at Foundation tier (grades 5 to 1) or Higher tier (grades 9 to 3) in the May/June series. Adults can study AQA 8461 online with Lift College from £39.99 a month and sit the same papers as school candidates at a Tutors & Exams centre.

What is in Paper 1 and Paper 2?

AQA splits the specification into seven topics. Paper 1 examines topics 1 to 4 and Paper 2 examines topics 5 to 7.

What is in Paper 1 and Paper 2?
PaperTopicsWhat you study
Paper 11. Cell biologyCell structure, microscopy, cell division, transport in cells (diffusion, osmosis, active transport)
2. OrganisationTissues and organs, digestion and enzymes, the heart and blood, plant tissues and transpiration
3. Infection and responsePathogens and disease, the immune system, vaccination, antibiotics, monoclonal antibodies (Higher)
4. BioenergeticsPhotosynthesis, respiration, metabolism
Paper 25. Homeostasis and responseThe nervous system, the brain and eye, hormones, blood glucose, reproductive hormones
6. Inheritance, variation and evolutionDNA and genetics, inheritance, variation, evolution, selective breeding, genetic engineering, classification
7. EcologyEcosystems, biodiversity, food chains, cycles, human impact on the environment

Both papers mix multiple choice, structured questions, short closed answers and longer open responses. For a topic-by-topic checklist across every exam board, see our GCSE Biology topics guide.

The ten required practicals

AQA requires ten practicals for GCSE Biology. They are not marked as a separate component: questions in both papers test the methods, results and analysis, so knowing each one well is worth marks on exam day.

The ten required practicals
TopicRequired practical
Cell biologyUsing a light microscope to observe and draw cells
Cell biologyMicrobiology: the effect of antiseptics or antibiotics on bacterial growth
Cell biologyOsmosis in plant tissue
OrganisationFood tests for sugars, starch, lipids and protein
OrganisationThe effect of pH on the rate of reaction of amylase
BioenergeticsThe effect of light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis
Homeostasis and responseReaction time
Homeostasis and responseThe effect of light or gravity on the growth of seedlings
EcologyMeasuring population size with quadrats and transects
EcologyThe effect of temperature on the rate of decay

Three of these (microbiology, plant responses and decay) are only in the separate Biology GCSE, not in Combined Science. If you are weighing the two, our guide to GCSE Combined Science for adults explains the difference.

Foundation or Higher tier?

You choose one tier for both papers. Foundation papers award grades 5 to 1 and Higher papers award grades 9 to 3. Higher includes extra content, for example monoclonal antibodies, and harder questions on topics both tiers share. Most nursing, midwifery and allied health routes ask for grade 4 or above, which is available on either tier, so many adults choose with their tutor once mock results show where they are. Our guide to GCSE grade boundaries shows how raw marks turn into grades.

AQA GCSE Biology past papers

AQA publishes past papers, mark schemes and examiner reports on its website and keeps most of them there for three years. The most recent series is released to the public later: AQA's published dates put the summer 2026 GCSE papers on its public site on 9 July 2027. Until then, the earlier series are the best practice material. Work through full papers under timed conditions (1 hour 45 minutes each), mark them with the mark scheme, then read the examiner report to see where marks were lost.

Can adults take AQA GCSE Biology?

Yes. There is no upper age limit and no entry requirement. Adults usually take it as a private candidate, which means studying independently and sitting the papers at an exam centre that accepts external candidates. Our guide to GCSE private candidates explains the process.

How to prepare for the AQA Biology exams

  1. Learn the content topic by topic, using the specification as your checklist.
  2. Practise the ten required practicals as exam questions: method, variables, results tables and graphs.
  3. Build the maths: percentages, ratios, rates, standard form and reading graphs make up at least 10% of the marks.
  4. Use the command words. "Describe", "explain" and "evaluate" ask for different answers, and the six-mark questions reward a logical sequence.
  5. Sit full past papers in 1 hour 45 minutes, then mark them and read the examiner report.
