What to look for in an online GCSE Sociology course
- GCSE or International GCSE. AQA 8192 is a GCSE; Cambridge International IGCSE Sociology 0495 is an International GCSE, a different qualification. CloudLearn teaches 0495, and Oxbridge Home Learning's page names both. If a sixth form, college or employer asks for "GCSE Sociology", check an International GCSE meets their requirement first.
- The topics you will study. AQA 8192 covers families, education, crime and deviance, and social stratification. Check the course teaches the specification you will sit.
- Marking of extended answers. Sociology rewards developed, evaluated answers, so look for a tutor who marks your practice and explains how to improve.
- Whether exam entry is included. Many course prices exclude exam entry and centre fees, which you pay to a centre yourself.
- Commitment and refunds. Compare a cancellable monthly plan with a fixed price or credit agreement, and check trial or refund terms.

How the exam works for adults
GCSE Sociology cannot be sat online. Adults sit the same written papers as school pupils, in person at an approved centre, as private candidates, for the same certificate.
AQA 8192 is assessed by 2 written papers of 1 hour 45 minutes each, on families, education, crime and deviance, and social stratification. The GCSE is untiered, so every candidate can achieve grades 9 to 1, and there is no coursework: it is 100% examined.
Sociology is examined in the May/June series only. The November series runs only for GCSE Maths and English Language, so plan your study towards a summer exam. Most learners spend 6 to 12 hours a week and finish in 12 to 18 months, or faster with more time each week.
On Lift College's +Exams plan, Lift enters you and books your seat at a Tutors & Exams centre in Birmingham, Bolton, Coventry, Doncaster, High Wycombe, Mitcham, Newcastle, Romford, St Neots or Taunton. To arrange a centre yourself, read how to sit GCSEs as a private candidate.
