Counselling qualifications in the UK run from Level 2 to Level 7, and each level lets you do something different. Level 2 teaches the core helping skills and is the recognised first step; Level 3 deepens the theory; Level 4 is the practitioner diploma that lets you see clients and register with a professional body; degrees and postgraduate routes lead to the same registration by a longer road. At Lift College the first step is the Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills, a TQUK qualification regulated by Ofqual, studied online with a named UK tutor after a 7-day free trial. This guide explains what each level is for, how long it takes and which one to start with.
One thing to settle before the detail: no Level 2 or Level 3 qualification lets you practise as a counsellor. Practising requires Level 4 or higher with supervised placement hours and registration with BACP, the NCPS or UKCP. Everything below Level 4 is training for the route, or for using counselling skills in a job you already have.
Which counselling qualification should I start with?
- You want to try the skills, or use them at work this month. Take the Introduction to Counselling Skills short course: about four hours, five modules with a knowledge check after each and a final test, and a Lift College CPD certificate the day you pass.
- You want a regulated qualification that counts on the route. Take the Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills: four tutor-marked units, portfolio plus recorded skills practice, no exams, no placement, 3 to 6 months, starting with a 7-day free trial.
- You already hold Level 2. Look for a Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Skills or Counselling Studies at a college or specialist provider, then Level 4.
- You already hold Level 3 and want to practise. The Level 4 Diploma in Counselling, with supervised placement hours, is the qualification you need.
- You have A Levels or an Access to HE Diploma and want the university route. A degree in counselling or psychotherapy, or a postgraduate diploma after a degree in any subject.
Both Lift College courses are listed on the counselling courses online hub.

What does each level let you do?
The table sets out the levels as the professional bodies and the Regulated Qualifications Framework describe them. Figures for Level 4 placement hours and pay come from the National Careers Service counsellor profile, checked on 20 October 2026.

| Level | Typical title | What it lets you do | Typical length | Placement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Introduction (CPD) | Introduction to Counselling Skills | Use basic listening and helping skills in your current role; decide whether to go further | About 4 hours | None |
| Level 2 | Certificate in Counselling Skills | Use counselling skills in care, support, housing, education and voluntary roles; the first step on the practitioner route | 3 to 6 months part time | None |
| Level 3 | Certificate in Counselling Skills or Counselling Studies | Deeper skills and theory; the usual entry requirement for Level 4 | About a year part time | None on most courses |
| Level 4 | Diploma in Counselling (or Therapeutic Counselling) | Practise as a counsellor and register with BACP, the NCPS or UKCP | About two years part time | Yes, at least 100 supervised client hours |
| Level 5 and above | Diploma, degree, postgraduate diploma or master's | Specialise, supervise, train others, or meet NHS and employer preferences for a degree | 1 to 3 years | Yes |
Counselling is not regulated by law in the UK, so there is no single compulsory qualification. In practice employers and the professional bodies treat the Level 4 diploma, or a degree, as the minimum for client work.
Level 2: the first step
A Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills teaches the skills every later course assumes you have: attending and active listening, reflecting, paraphrasing and summarising, open questions and silence, boundaries and endings. It also introduces the three main theoretical approaches, covers ethics and diversity, and starts the personal development work that runs through all counselling training.
The Lift College version is the TQUK Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills (RQF), qualification number 601/7815/2 on the Ofqual register, worth 16 credits with 120 guided learning hours. It has four mandatory units, is assessed by a portfolio of written work plus recorded skills practice with a volunteer, has no exams and no placement, and comes with a named UK tutor from enrolment to certificate. Most people finish in 3 to 6 months. It starts with a 7-day free trial, every payment carries a 14-day money-back guarantee, and the certificate is issued by TQUK.
What Level 2 does not do is qualify you to practise. What it does do is give you a regulated qualification that Level 3 and Level 4 providers recognise, and skills you can use at work straight away.
Level 3: deeper skills and theory
Level 3 certificates in counselling skills or counselling studies are offered by further education colleges and specialist providers, usually over an academic year part time. They go further into the counselling relationship, the main theories and self-awareness, and most Level 4 diplomas ask for Level 3, or equivalent experience, before you apply. Lift College does not currently offer a Level 3 counselling course; if you hold Level 2 and are ready for Level 3, your local college is the usual next stop.
Level 4: the practitioner diploma
The Level 4 Diploma in Counselling is the qualification that lets you see clients. It typically takes two years part time and includes a supervised placement of at least 100 client hours, personal therapy on most courses, and an interview to get on. Because the placement is the point, a Level 4 diploma cannot be completed without client work, and courses that are sold as fully online without a placement will not meet the professional bodies' practice requirements on their own.
Price and format vary widely, and some Level 4 courses sold online are endorsed rather than regulated by Ofqual. Colleges offering regulated Level 4 diplomas usually run in person, with placement support built in. When you compare Level 4 courses, check three things: whether the qualification is on the Ofqual register, whether placement hours are arranged or left to you, and whether the professional body you want to join accepts the course for registration.
Degree and postgraduate routes
A degree in counselling or psychotherapy usually needs two to three A Levels, or an Access to Higher Education Diploma, and takes three years full time. A postgraduate diploma or master's follows a degree in any subject and takes one to two years. Both lead to the same professional-body registration as the college route, and some employers, especially in the NHS, prefer them. The full route from a standing start is covered in our guide to how to become a counsellor in the UK.
How long does the whole route take?
From Level 2 with no experience, three to four years part time is realistic: 3 to 6 months for Level 2, about a year for Level 3, then two years for Level 4 including the placement hours. You can work throughout, and most people do. The National Careers Service puts counsellor pay at £25,000 a year starting, rising to £48,000 with experience; many counsellors are self-employed and set their own session fees.
Using counselling skills without becoming a counsellor
Most people who take a Level 2 counselling skills course never become counsellors, and that is not a failure of the course. Care and support workers, teaching assistants, housing and youth workers, managers and volunteers all use the same skills every day. If your interest is mental health at work rather than the counselling route, the Mental Health Awareness Training CPD course sits alongside the counselling courses. If you are worried about your own mental health right now, NHS 111 and Samaritans on 116 123 are there at any hour.
