Functional Skills English Level 2 past papers and answers (official sources)

Official Functional Skills English Level 2 past papers: reading, writing and SLC samples with mark schemes from Open Awards, NCFE, City & Guilds, VTCT.

Free, official Functional Skills English Level 2 past papers come from the awarding bodies as sample assessments with mark schemes, split by component: Open Awards publishes Level 2 reading, writing and speaking, listening and communicating (SLC) samples as separate PDFs; NCFE publishes free Level 2 reading and writing sample papers with mark schemes plus SLC assessor guidance; City & Guilds publishes Level 2 reading and writing example exams online; and VTCT Skills (formerly Skillsfirst) publishes five practice exams each for reading and writing. Lift College's Functional Skills English Level 2 course prepares you for the TQUK qualification (number 610/2625/6), includes one sitting of each component, costs £39.99 a month and starts with a 7-day free trial, nothing charged until day 8. Each source below was checked on 9 October 2026.

Three components, three kinds of practice

You must pass all three parts:

  • Reading: a timed paper (60 minutes with TQUK) on unfamiliar texts, externally marked. Samples include a source booklet, questions and mark scheme.
  • Writing: timed tasks such as a letter, article or email (60 minutes with TQUK), marked for composition and for spelling, punctuation and grammar. Samples come with a marking grid.
  • Speaking, listening and communicating (SLC): a presentation with questions and a group discussion, assessed by the centre and quality assured by the awarding body. There are no SLC past papers, only sample tasks and assessor guidance.

Live papers are rarely released and recent practice papers are often behind a centre login, but sample assessments follow the same Department for Education content whichever awarding body you sit with.

Official sources, awarding body by awarding body

Open Awards. The most complete free set: separate Level 2 PDFs for reading (three texts, 10 questions, 30 marks, 1 hour, with mark scheme), writing (two tasks, 60 marks, 1 hour, with mark scheme) and SLC (a 4 to 7 minute presentation with questions, then a 10 minute group discussion). No login needed.

NCFE. Free sample papers and mark schemes for reading (30 marks, 1 hour, dictionary allowed) and writing (two activities, 1 hour 10 minutes), plus free SLC assessor guidance. Newer practice papers are password protected for centres. Its online practice assessments page lists in-browser Level 2 samples.

City & Guilds. The Functional Skills (4748) page links Level 2 reading and writing example exams plus familiarisation tests. Full sample exams and past papers sit on Open Assess, which needs a centre account.

VTCT Skills (formerly Skillsfirst). Reading Level 2 exams 1 to 5 and Writing Level 2 exams 1 to 5 as downloads, with a zipped folder of mark schemes.

Pearson Edexcel. Publishes the specification; its past papers search showed no Functional Skills papers available on the day we checked.

TQUK. The awarding body for Lift College's course does not publish open sample papers. Lift College learners sit timed mocks inside the course before booking.

Highfield. No openly published Level 2 English sample paper was found, so none is linked.

How to use the papers for each component

Reading. Do a paper timed, then mark it. Most lost marks come from implied meaning, bias and comparing texts.

Writing. Write both tasks under time, then mark yourself against the grid: format, register, paragraphing and word count. Proofread for spelling, punctuation and grammar separately; those marks are a large share of the total. Lift College's named UK tutor marks your writing in 5 to 7 working days.

Speaking, listening and communicating. Read the Open Awards SLC sample and NCFE's assessor guidance for the criteria: relevant contributions, asking and answering questions, adapting to the audience and moving a discussion forward. Lift College runs the SLC assessment online, quality assured by TQUK.

How the TQUK on-screen exam differs from paper

  • Reading and writing are typed on screen in separate 60-minute sittings, under remote invigilation at home (computer, webcam, quiet room) or at a TQUK-approved centre. Practise typing your writing so planning, drafting and proofreading fit the hour.
  • No spelling or grammar aids are available in the writing exam, so turn off the spellchecker when you practise.
  • Use the City & Guilds familiarisation test to learn the on-screen controls.
  • SLC is a live assessed activity, not an on-screen exam.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find free Functional Skills English Level 2 past papers with answers?

Open Awards and NCFE publish free Level 2 reading and writing sample papers with mark schemes, City & Guilds publishes online example exams and VTCT Skills publishes five practice exams per component (links above).

Are there past papers for speaking, listening and communicating?

No. SLC is a live assessed activity, so awarding bodies publish sample tasks and assessor guidance instead; Open Awards and NCFE both do so free of charge.

Do writing papers come with model answers?

Usually not. Writing mark schemes are grids describing what a pass looks like for composition and for spelling, punctuation and grammar; use them to mark your own work, or have a tutor mark it.

Can I use Open Awards or NCFE papers to prepare for a TQUK exam?

Yes. All reformed English Level 2 qualifications follow the same subject content and the same three components, so the practice transfers.

Is the TQUK English Level 2 exam on paper or on screen?

Reading and writing are on screen, under remote invigilation at home or at a TQUK-approved centre. SLC is a live activity run online by Lift College and quality assured by TQUK.
