Quick answer
A teaching assistant apprenticeship is a paid school job with training built in, usually 15 to 18 months at the Level 3 standard, and only possible if a school hires you. An online Level 3 TA course costs from £49.99 a month, is self-paced, and you study while working or volunteering in a school. Apprenticeship if you can get one locally; course if you need to start now.

What is a teaching assistant apprenticeship?
A teaching assistant apprenticeship is employment. A school or academy trust employs you as an apprentice TA, pays you at least the apprentice minimum wage, and releases you for off-the-job training with a college or training provider. You work towards the Level 3 Teaching Assistant apprenticeship standard (ST0454), published by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education, and finish with an end-point assessment that includes a practical observation and a professional discussion.
Typical duration is 15 to 18 months. You are usually employed for at least 30 hours a week, and part of your paid time is set aside for off-the-job training. Entry is set by the employer, but most ask for GCSE English and maths at grade 4 or above, or Level 2 Functional Skills, which you can take alongside the apprenticeship if you do not already hold them.
Vacancies are advertised on the government's Find an Apprenticeship service. Because each post is a real job, the number available depends entirely on local school budgets, which is why "teaching assistant apprenticeship near me" is one of the most searched phrases on the topic.
What is an online Level 3 teaching assistant course?
An online course is a qualification, not a job. You enrol with a distance learning provider, study the units online at your own pace, and complete a placement in a school to evidence the practical criteria. Lift College's Ofqual-regulated TQUK Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (QAN 601/2731/4) and the Level 3 Diploma (QAN 601/4423/3) are both Level 3 qualifications on the Regulated Qualifications Framework, the same level as the apprenticeship.
Study is from £49.99 a month for the Certificate and £59.99 a month for the Diploma, with a free 7-day trial and a 14-day money-back guarantee on every payment. The Certificate typically takes 6 to 9 months and the Diploma 12 to 15 months. You also need to be working or volunteering in a school while you study: at least 12 hours a week for the Certificate, and enough classroom time to complete the observed units for the Diploma. Many schools are happy to take volunteers.

How much does a teaching assistant apprentice earn?
The apprentice rate of the National Minimum Wage applies if you are under 19, or if you are 19 or over and in the first year of your apprenticeship. After that you must be paid at least the National Minimum Wage for your age. Some schools pay more and place apprentice TAs on the NJC support staff scale, where point 3 is £25,614 full-time equivalent under the 2026/27 award. Our guide to how much a teaching assistant earns in the UK explains the pay points and term-time-only pro rata.
Is an apprenticeship better than a course for becoming a TA?
Neither is better; they fit different situations.
Choose the apprenticeship if you are 16 to 24, can work full-time in a school, and there is a vacancy within reach. You will be paid, you will have daily classroom experience, and you will finish with a standard that every school recognises.
Choose the online course if you are already working or caring for children, cannot find a vacancy, want to be qualified before you apply for jobs, or want to qualify faster (the Certificate typically takes 6 to 9 months). Schools recruiting TAs look for a Level 3 qualification plus evidence of time in a classroom, which your time in school while you study provides. See how to become a teaching assistant in the UK for the job-hunting side.
Many people also combine the two: they take the online Level 3 course first, use it to win a paid TA job, then let the school fund HLTA Level 4 later.
Can you do the apprenticeship if you already have a Level 3 qualification?
Sometimes, but not always. Apprenticeship funding rules only allow an apprenticeship at the same level as a qualification you already hold if it will teach you substantial new skills, so an employer may look at a higher level instead. If you already have a Level 3 TA qualification, the usual next step is the HLTA Level 4 qualification. Our teaching assistant levels explained guide shows how Levels 2, 3 and 4 fit together.
Which online Level 3 should you pick: Certificate or Diploma?
The Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools is the shorter qualification (32 credits, typically 6 to 9 months), suited to anyone starting out or moving up from a Level 2. The Level 3 Diploma is larger (44 credits, typically 12 to 15 months) and adds units such as planning and delivering learning activities under the direction of a teacher, supporting children and young people through transitions, and promoting wellbeing and resilience. Both are Ofqual-regulated TQUK qualifications. The school decides which qualification a post needs, so check the job advert.
