About this course

DSE Assessor Training

You can do DSE assessor training online in the UK with Lift College's DSE Assessor Training course. It is 3 hours of learning in 6 short modules, covering what the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 require of employers, who counts as a user, the DSE assessor's role and competence, how to plan and carry out a workstation assessment using the HSE checklist, the ergonomics of chairs, screens, desks, lighting and the room, assessing laptop, home, hot-desk and mobile workers, recognising posture problems and health complaints, making adjustments and referrals, and recording, actioning and reviewing assessments. It costs £19.99, pay once, and your CPD certificate issued by Lift College is ready the same day you pass. Lift College recommends a refresh every 3 years, and the refresher is free.

This is the course above DSE user training. A user course teaches someone to set up their own desk. This course is for the person who carries out and records assessments for other people, decides what needs to change and makes sure it happens. The DSE Regulations require every employer to analyse the workstations of its users, reduce the risks found and give users training, and HSE's guidance L26 says the person doing the assessment must be competent to do it. Musculoskeletal problems in the neck, back, shoulders, wrists and hands, together with eye strain, headaches and fatigue, remain among the most common work-related health complaints among people who work at screens, and most of them come down to a workstation nobody had looked at properly, especially since home and hybrid working became normal.

This course covers what a DSE assessor needs to know and do. You learn the law and who it applies to, how to plan an assessment programme, how to use the HSE workstation checklist to observe, question and measure, how a chair, screen, keyboard, mouse, desk, lighting and environment should be set up and what to do when they are not, how to assess people working on laptops, at home, at hot desks or on the move, how to spot posture problems and health complaints and when to refer them on, and how to record findings, agree actions, follow them up and review. It is written for anyone nominated as a DSE assessor in a UK workplace, whether that is their main job or an addition to a health and safety, HR, facilities or office role.

By the end you can
  • Explain what the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 require of employers and who counts as a DSE user
  • Describe the role, responsibilities and limits of a DSE assessor and what competence means under the Management Regulations
  • Plan a DSE assessment programme covering new starters, changes of workstation, home and hybrid workers and reported problems
  • Carry out a workstation assessment for a colleague using the HSE checklist, by observing, questioning and measuring
  • Identify faults in the set-up of chairs, screens, keyboards, mice, desks, lighting and the working environment and recommend the fix
  • Apply the assessment to laptops, home workstations, hot desks, shared desks and mobile working
  • Recognise posture problems and health complaints linked to screen work, make reasonable adjustments and know when to refer to occupational health or a manager
  • Record assessments, agree and track actions, arrange eye tests and user training, and review when a workstation or user changes

The law

The law this course supports

Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992

Applies in Great Britain. Employers must carry out a suitable and sufficient analysis of the workstations of users, reduce the risks found to the lowest extent reasonably practicable, make sure workstations meet the Schedule of minimum requirements, plan breaks or changes of activity, provide eye tests and any special glasses needed for screen work, and give users training and information. Northern Ireland has the same duties in its own Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations.

HSE L26: Work with display screen equipment, guidance on the Regulations

HSE's guidance on how employers meet each regulation. It explains who counts as a user, what a suitable and sufficient assessment covers, that the person carrying out assessments should be trained and competent to do so, and how to apply the Regulations to home, laptop and mobile workers. It is guidance, not law, but following it is the accepted way of complying.

HSE DSE workstation checklist (CK1)

HSE's free checklist for workstation assessments, covering the keyboard, mouse, display screen, software, furniture and the environment, with a column for the action taken. This course teaches you to use it, and you can use it as your organisation's assessment form or adapt it.

Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, regulation 3: risk assessment

Applies in Great Britain. Every employer must make a suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks to its employees and others, review it when it may no longer be valid, and record the significant findings if it has five or more employees. The DSE assessment is one part of this wider duty, and the Regulations expect the people who do assessments to be competent. Northern Ireland has the same duties in the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2000.

What our learners say

Stories from Lift College learners on our qualifications, in their own words.

“I had been a care assistant for four years without a formal qualification. Lift College made the whole process straightforward, my assessor visited regularly and I completed my Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care in just over a year. I was promoted to senior care worker the month after I qualified.”

“My employer was clear, I needed GCSE English to move into a supervisory role. Lift College helped me find the right exam board and an exam centre five minutes from home. Passed grade 4. Got the promotion.”

“My employer needed me to have Level 2 maths before they could register me on the Level 3 apprenticeship programme. Lift College was fast, the tutor was brilliant, and I resit my maths once after a near-miss and passed the second time. The whole thing took twelve weeks.”

FAQ

Questions about DSE Assessor Training

What is the difference between DSE training and DSE assessor training?

DSE user training teaches a screen user to set up their own workstation, take breaks and ask for an eye test. DSE assessor training is the level above: it is for the person who carries out and records workstation assessments for other people, decides what needs to change, follows it up and keeps the records the Regulations expect. If you only need to look after your own desk, Lift College's Display Screen Equipment (DSE) Training is the right course.

Is online DSE assessor training enough to make me a competent assessor?

The DSE Regulations do not name a qualification. HSE's guidance L26 says whoever assesses workstations should be trained and competent, and your employer decides what that means for your workplace. This course gives you the knowledge: the law, the HSE checklist, ergonomics and the recording and review process. Your employer may also want you to carry out some assessments alongside an experienced assessor or health and safety adviser before you work alone, and complex cases involving injury or disability should still go to occupational health.

How often should DSE assessments be carried out?

An assessment is needed when a new user starts, when a workstation, software or the way it is used changes substantially, when a user moves to home or hybrid working, and when a user reports a problem. There is no fixed interval in the Regulations, but many employers review every one to two years as good practice. Lift College recommends assessors refresh this course every 3 years, and the refresher is free.

What does this course not cover?

It does not cover clinical diagnosis or treatment of musculoskeletal conditions, specialist assessment for people with a significant disability or injury, or designing an office from scratch. It teaches you to recognise when a case is beyond a workplace assessment and to refer it to occupational health, an ergonomist or the person's GP. It is also not a course on general risk assessment; Lift College's Risk Assessment Training covers that.

How do I assess a home worker's workstation?

Module 4 covers this in detail. You ask the user to complete the HSE checklist as a self-assessment, then review it with them by video call, asking for photos of them seated at the desk from the side and the front. You check chair, screen height, laptop set-up, lighting and space, agree the changes, confirm what equipment the employer will provide, and record and follow up in the same way as an office assessment.

How long do I keep access?

You keep your access for as long as Lift College offers the course, and never less than 3 years from the day you buy. Your certificate PDF is yours to keep.

What is the free refresher?

Lift College recommends refreshing this course every 3 years. When your date comes round, you can retake the latest version free and get a new certificate. We email you 30 days before.
