About this course

Display Screen Equipment (DSE) Training

Hours at a screen can lead to pain in your neck, shoulders, back, arms, wrists and hands, as well as fatigue and eye strain. Most of it can be prevented with a well set-up workstation and regular breaks.

This course covers what the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 expect screen users to know. You learn how to set up your chair, screen, keyboard and mouse, how to work well on a laptop and how to plan breaks. You also learn how workstation assessments work and your right to an eye test.

By the end you can
  • Explain the health risks linked to display screen work
  • Set up your chair, screen, keyboard and mouse correctly
  • Adapt your set-up for laptops, hot-desking and working from home
  • Plan short, frequent breaks or changes of activity
  • Take part in a DSE workstation assessment
  • Know when to ask your employer for an eye test

FAQ

Questions about Display Screen Equipment (DSE) Training

Who needs DSE training?

HSE explains the regulations cover workers who use screens daily as a regular part of their job. They do not apply to people who use screens infrequently or only for a short time.

Does DSE training cover working from home?

Yes. HSE explains the regulations extend to home workers. The course shows you how to set up a safe workstation at home, including with a laptop.

Will my employer pay for an eye test?

HSE says an employer must provide and pay for an eye test if a DSE user asks for one. Employers only pay for glasses if you need special glasses for screen distance.

How often should I take a break from the screen?

HSE advises short breaks often rather than longer ones less often. For example, 5 to 10 minutes every hour is better than 20 minutes every 2 hours.

Is online DSE training valid?

Your employer decides what training you need. This course covers what the DSE Regulations expect screen users to know, and prepares you for your workstation assessment.

How long do I keep access?

You keep your access for as long as Lift College offers the course, and never less than 3 years from the day you buy. Your certificate PDF is yours to keep.
