Facilities Management Course
You can do a facilities management course online in the UK with Lift College's Facilities Management Course. It is 4 hours of learning in 7 short modules, covering what facilities management is and what the role carries, the health and safety law that applies to buildings, fire safety and emergency planning, the statutory inspections and checks a building needs, managing services and contractors, space, energy and waste, and looking after people, budgets and records. It costs £19.99, pay once, and your CPD certificate issued by Lift College is ready the same day you pass. Lift College recommends a refresh every 3 years, and the refresher is free.
Every building that people work in has somebody responsible for it, whether they are called a facilities manager, office manager, premises officer or caretaker. That person carries real legal duties: the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 makes them the responsible person for fire, the Workplace Regulations set standards for temperature, lighting, ventilation, toilets and maintenance, the Control of Asbestos Regulations give a duty to manage asbestos in non-domestic premises, and HSE's Approved Code of Practice L8 expects legionella to be assessed and controlled. When those duties are missed the results are fires, asbestos exposure, outbreaks of Legionnaires' disease, prosecutions and buildings nobody wants to work in. Most failures come down to the same thing: nobody knew the check was theirs to make.
This course covers the whole job. You learn what facilities management is and how hard and soft services fit together, the law that applies to the building and the people in it, how to run fire safety and emergency arrangements, which inspections and tests the building needs and how often, how to manage cleaning, security, maintenance and other contractors safely, how to plan space, cut energy use and dispose of waste lawfully, and how to manage a helpdesk, a planned maintenance programme, a budget and the records an inspector or insurer will ask for. It is written for people new to facilities management, people who have been given building responsibilities alongside another job, and anyone who wants to move into the role, across the UK.
- Explain what facilities management is, the difference between hard and soft services and what the facilities role is responsible for
- Describe the duties on employers and those in control of premises under the Health and Safety at Work Act and the Workplace Regulations
- Identify the duties of the responsible person for fire safety and the parts of a fire risk assessment and emergency plan
- Plan the statutory inspections and checks a building needs, including asbestos, legionella, gas, electrical, lifting equipment and fire systems
- Describe how to select, brief, monitor and control contractors, including permits to work and sharing information on asbestos and other hazards
- Apply good practice to space planning, energy use and waste, including the duty of care for waste
- Recognise the role of a helpdesk, planned preventive maintenance and a maintenance budget in keeping a building running
- Keep the records a facilities manager needs for inspectors, insurers and the organisation

liftcollege.co.uk/verify/LC-CPD-000000The law this course supports
Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974
Applies in England, Wales and Scotland. Employers must ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare of their employees, and those in control of premises owe a duty to people who are not their employees but use the building. Northern Ireland has the same duties in the Health and Safety at Work (Northern Ireland) Order 1978.
Read the legislation →Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005
Applies in England and Wales. The responsible person, usually the employer, owner or whoever controls the premises, must carry out and keep up to date a fire risk assessment, put in place fire precautions, plan for emergencies and give staff information and training. Scotland has similar duties under the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Fire Safety (Scotland) Regulations 2006, and Northern Ireland under the Fire and Rescue Services (Northern Ireland) Order 2006.
Read the legislation →Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992
Applies in Great Britain. The workplace and its equipment must be maintained in good repair, with reasonable temperature, enough ventilation, lighting and space, safe floors and traffic routes, clean conditions and suitable toilets, washing, drinking water, rest and changing facilities. Northern Ireland has equivalent Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations.
Read the legislation →Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, regulation 4: duty to manage asbestos in non-domestic premises
Applies in Great Britain. Whoever has responsibility for maintaining or repairing non-domestic premises must find out whether asbestos is present, record where it is and its condition, assess the risk, prepare and act on a management plan and give the information to anyone who might disturb it, such as contractors. Northern Ireland has the same duty in its own Control of Asbestos Regulations.
Read the legislation →HSE Approved Code of Practice L8: Legionnaires' disease, the control of legionella bacteria in water systems
The Approved Code of Practice sets out how duty holders meet their legal duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act and COSHH: identify and assess the risk from legionella in hot and cold water systems and other plant, appoint a responsible person, prevent or control the risk, keep records and review. Following it is not compulsory but it has special legal status.
Read the legislation →Environmental Protection Act 1990, section 34: duty of care for waste
Applies in England, Wales and Scotland. Anyone who produces, keeps or disposes of business waste must store it safely, hand it only to a registered carrier or licensed site and keep a waste transfer note describing what was handed over, for at least two years. Northern Ireland has the same duty in the Waste and Contaminated Land (Northern Ireland) Order 1997.

What our learners say
Stories from Lift College learners on our qualifications, in their own words.
“I had been a care assistant for four years without a formal qualification. Lift College made the whole process straightforward, my assessor visited regularly and I completed my Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care in just over a year. I was promoted to senior care worker the month after I qualified.”
“My employer was clear, I needed GCSE English to move into a supervisory role. Lift College helped me find the right exam board and an exam centre five minutes from home. Passed grade 4. Got the promotion.”
“My employer needed me to have Level 2 maths before they could register me on the Level 3 apprenticeship programme. Lift College was fast, the tutor was brilliant, and I resit my maths once after a near-miss and passed the second time. The whole thing took twelve weeks.”
Questions about Facilities Management Course
Is an online facilities management course valid?
Your employer decides what training the role needs. This course gives the knowledge a facilities manager needs across health and safety, fire, statutory compliance, contractors, space, waste and budgets, with a CPD certificate issued by Lift College. It is not a regulated qualification or a professional membership grade; if your employer wants either, this course is sound groundwork for them.
Who needs facilities management training?
Anyone responsible for a building and the people in it, whatever their job title. That includes new facilities managers, office managers, premises officers, caretakers and site managers, people named as the responsible person for fire, asbestos or legionella, and owners of small businesses who run their own premises.
How often should facilities management training be refreshed?
There is no legal interval for the course itself, although many of the checks it covers have fixed intervals, from monthly legionella temperature readings to yearly gas safety checks and fire alarm servicing. The law and guidance change, so Lift College recommends a refresh every 3 years, and the refresher is free.
What does this course not cover?
It does not make you a competent person to carry out specialist work such as asbestos surveys, legionella risk assessments of complex systems, gas work, fixed electrical testing or fire risk assessments of high-risk buildings. It teaches you what each of those is, how often it is needed and how to appoint and check the specialist who does it. Your employer decides what further training your role needs.
How do I set up a compliance calendar for a building?
Module 4 walks you through it. You list every statutory and recommended check the building needs, such as the asbestos register review, legionella checks, gas safety, fixed wiring and portable appliance testing, lift examinations, fire alarm, emergency lighting and extinguisher servicing, record the interval and the last date for each, assign an owner, and set reminders ahead of each due date. You then keep the certificates and reports together so an inspector or insurer can see them.
How long do I keep access?
You keep your access for as long as Lift College offers the course, and never less than 3 years from the day you buy. Your certificate PDF is yours to keep.
What is the free refresher?
Lift College recommends refreshing this course every 3 years. When your date comes round, you can retake the latest version free and get a new certificate. We email you 30 days before.
