About this course

Fire Marshal Training

You can do fire marshal training online in the UK with Lift College's Fire Marshal Training course. It is 2 hours of learning in 6 short modules, covering how fire behaves, the fire marshal's proactive checks, fire safety signs and equipment, your reactive duties when the alarm sounds, sweeping and assisting people, and when it is safe to use an extinguisher. It costs £19.99, pay once, and your CPD certificate issued by Lift College is ready the same day you pass. Lift College recommends a refresh every 3 years, and the refresher is free.

Fire safety law expects the responsible person to nominate competent people to help with evacuation and fire fighting equipment. A fire marshal is the person colleagues look to when the alarm sounds, and the person who spots the propped fire door before it matters. Marshals need training that goes beyond general fire awareness.

This course covers the role in full. You learn how fire starts and spreads, the daily and weekly checks that prevent it, what the signs and equipment in your building mean, how to sweep your area and help people who need assistance, how to run a roll call, and how to decide whether to tackle a small fire or leave it. It is written for workplaces across the UK, with the fire safety law for each nation explained.

By the end you can
  • Describe the fire marshal's role and where it fits in your workplace fire plan
  • Explain how fire starts and spreads and the common causes at work
  • Carry out proactive checks on escape routes, fire doors, signage and equipment
  • Act on the alarm: sweep your area, close doors and guide people to the assembly point
  • Assist people who need help to evacuate, including Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans
  • Run a roll call and report to the fire and rescue service on arrival
  • Choose the right extinguisher for a fire and know when not to fight it
  • Record checks, drills and faults and report shortcomings

What learners say about Lift College

FAQ

Questions about Fire Marshal Training

Is online fire marshal training valid?

Your employer decides what training your fire risk assessment calls for. This course covers the knowledge a nominated fire marshal needs under fire safety law. Your employer will also walk you through the layout, alarm and assembly point for your own building, and many add a practical extinguisher session.

How often should fire marshal training be done?

The law says training must be repeated periodically where appropriate. Lift College recommends refreshing every 3 years, with a drill at least once a year in between, and the refresher is free.

What is the difference between a fire marshal and a fire warden?

In practice the titles are used interchangeably. Some workplaces use warden for routine checks and marshal for evacuation duties, but the law simply asks for a sufficient number of competent nominated persons.

How many fire marshals does a workplace need?

Enough to cover every floor or area on every shift, with cover for holidays and sickness. The fire risk assessment sets the number. Low risk offices often work on one marshal per 20 to 50 people per floor; higher risk premises need more.

Should a fire marshal fight a fire?

Only if it is small, you have the right extinguisher, you are trained to use it and your exit is behind you. If in any doubt, leave it, close the door and get out. Raising the alarm and evacuating people always comes first.

How long do I keep access?

You keep your access for as long as Lift College offers the course, and never less than 3 years from the day you buy. Your certificate PDF is yours to keep.

What is the free refresher?

Lift College recommends refreshing this course every 3 years. When your date comes round, you can retake the latest version free and get a new certificate. We email you 30 days before.

Does it count towards my CPD?

Yes. Your receipt shows the course, the date and the amount paid, and you can pass it to your employer. Buying for a team? Ask about team enrolment and the team will help.
