About this course

Legionella Awareness Training

You can do legionella awareness training online in the UK with Lift College's Legionella Awareness Training course. It is 1 hour of learning in 4 short modules, covering what legionella is and the disease it causes, where the bacteria grow in water systems, who is most at risk, the legal duties of duty holders and responsible persons, the legionella risk assessment, temperature checks, flushing of little used outlets, cleaning showerheads and keeping records. It costs £19.99, pay once, and your CPD certificate issued by Lift College is ready the same day you pass. Lift College recommends a refresh every 12 months, and the refresher is free.

Legionnaires' disease is a serious form of pneumonia caught by breathing in water droplets containing legionella bacteria. The bacteria grow in warm, stagnant water, which means hot and cold water systems, showers, spa pools and cooling towers in ordinary workplaces and rented homes. Most outbreaks trace back to a system nobody was checking.

This course covers what the Approved Code of Practice expects of anyone who looks after a water system. You learn what legionella is and how people catch it, where it grows and the conditions it needs, who is responsible under the law, what a legionella risk assessment covers, the routine controls of temperature checks, flushing, descaling and cleaning, and how to keep the records an inspector will ask for. It is written for premises across the UK.

By the end you can
  • Explain what legionella is, how Legionnaires' disease is caught and who is most at risk
  • Identify where legionella grows in hot and cold water systems and other plant
  • Describe the duties of duty holders, responsible persons and employees under the law and L8
  • Explain what a legionella risk assessment covers and when it should be reviewed
  • Carry out routine controls: temperature checks, flushing little used outlets and cleaning showerheads
  • Keep the records the Approved Code of Practice expects
  • Recognise when to call in a competent water treatment specialist

Which online legionella awareness certificate do employers accept?

Your employer, or your own position as a duty holder, decides what legionella training you need. The Health and Safety at Work Act and COSHH put the duty to assess and control the risk on employers, landlords and those in control of premises, and the Approved Code of Practice L8 expects anyone with legionella duties to be competent. A good certificate records the course, hours, completion date and refresh date, and can be verified. An awareness course covers what legionella is, where it grows, the control measures in HSG274 and your part in checks and records; it does not replace the training a nominated competent person needs.

Lift College's certificate does each of these: it names Legionella Awareness Training, shows 1 hour of learning, your completion date and a refresh date 12 months on, with a unique number and verification link. The refresher is free.

What learners say about Lift College

FAQ

Questions about Legionella Awareness Training

Is online legionella awareness training valid?

Your employer or your own position as duty holder decides what training you need. L8 expects people with legionella duties to be competent and trained. This course gives the awareness level knowledge; designing a written scheme or treating a complex system is specialist work.

How often should legionella awareness training be done?

L8 does not fix an interval but expects competence to be maintained and the risk assessment to be reviewed regularly. Lift College recommends refreshing every 12 months, and the refresher is free.

Do landlords need a legionella risk assessment?

Yes. Landlords of residential premises have a duty to assess and control the risk from legionella in the water systems they provide. For most domestic properties this is a simple assessment that the landlord or agent can do with awareness training like this course.

What temperatures stop legionella?

The bacteria grow between 20 and 45 degrees Celsius. Hot water should be stored at 60 degrees and reach outlets at 50 degrees within a minute; cold water should stay below 20 degrees. Monthly checks confirm this.

What records should I keep?

The risk assessment, the written scheme of control, who is responsible, the results of temperature checks, flushing and cleaning, any remedial work and the dates of review. Keep them for at least five years.

How long do I keep access?

You keep your access for as long as Lift College offers the course, and never less than 3 years from the day you buy. Your certificate PDF is yours to keep.

What is the free refresher?

Lift College recommends refreshing this course every 12 months. When your date comes round, you can retake the latest version free and get a new certificate. We email you 30 days before.

Does it count towards my CPD?

Yes. The course is 1 hour of learning, shown on your CPD certificate issued by Lift College, so you can log the hours in your CPD record.

Can I get my money back?

Yes. Ask within 14 days of paying and we refund you in full.

Can my employer pay?

Yes. Your receipt shows the course, the date and the amount paid, and you can pass it to your employer. Buying for a team? Ask about team enrolment and the team will help.
