About this course

LOLER Training

You can do LOLER training online in the UK with Lift College's LOLER Training course. It is 2 hours of learning in 5 short modules, covering what the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 are and the equipment they apply to, who carries the duties, risk assessment for lifting operations, selecting lifting equipment and accessories that are strong, stable and marked with their safe working load, thorough examination by a competent person and the inspection, maintenance and storage between examinations, and how to plan, supervise and carry out a lifting operation safely. It costs £19.99, pay once, and your CPD certificate issued by Lift College is ready the same day you pass. Lift College recommends a refresh every 3 years, and the refresher is free.

Lifting equipment is everywhere at work: forklift trucks, cranes, vehicle lifts, passenger and goods lifts, telehandlers, excavators used for lifting, chain blocks, slings and shackles, and patient hoists in care homes and hospitals. When a lift goes wrong the load falls, the equipment overturns or someone is struck or crushed, and the injuries are usually serious. HSE's investigations into lifting incidents keep finding the same causes: equipment that was never examined, accessories past their safe working load, lifts that nobody planned and operators who were never told what the regulations expect of them.

This course covers what LOLER and the Approved Code of Practice L113 ask of employers, the self-employed and anyone who has control of lifting equipment or the way it is used. You learn which equipment and accessories the regulations cover, what strong, stable, positioned and marked means in practice, the extra rules for equipment that lifts people, how often thorough examination is due and what the report must say, what to do when a defect is found, and how a lifting operation is planned by a competent person, supervised and carried out. It is written for workplaces across the UK, with a note on the parallel regulations in Northern Ireland.

By the end you can
  • Explain what LOLER covers, which equipment and accessories count as lifting equipment and who carries the duties
  • Describe the hazards of lifting operations and how a risk assessment identifies the load, the route, the people and the environment
  • Identify lifting equipment and accessories that are suitable for the task, of adequate strength and stability, correctly positioned and marked with their safe working load
  • Recognise the extra requirements for lifting equipment used to lift people, including hoists in care settings
  • Explain when thorough examination is due, who may carry it out, what the report contains and what happens when a defect is found
  • Carry out the pre-use checks, inspection, maintenance and storage that keep equipment safe between thorough examinations
  • Plan a lifting operation with a competent person, including the lift plan, exclusion zone, communication and supervision

The law

The law this course supports

Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998

Applies in England, Wales and Scotland to employers, the self-employed and anyone who controls lifting equipment or the way it is used. Lifting equipment must be strong and stable, positioned and installed safely and marked with its safe working load, every lifting operation must be planned by a competent person, supervised and carried out safely, and equipment must be thoroughly examined at set intervals with the reports kept. Northern Ireland has the parallel Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1999.

Read the legislation →

HSE Approved Code of Practice L113: Safe use of lifting equipment

The Approved Code of Practice and guidance on LOLER. It explains what counts as lifting equipment, how to plan a lifting operation, what thorough examination involves and what the report must contain. Following it is not compulsory, but it has special legal status: if you are prosecuted and did not follow it, you must show you complied with the law in another way.

Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998

PUWER applies to all work equipment, including lifting equipment, and sits alongside LOLER. It requires equipment to be suitable for its use, maintained in a safe condition, inspected where deterioration could lead to danger, and used only by people who have received adequate information, instruction and training. Northern Ireland has its own PUWER (Northern Ireland) 1999.

Read the legislation →

Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974

Applies in England, Wales and Scotland. Employers must provide the information, instruction, training and supervision needed to keep employees safe, so far as is reasonably practicable (section 2), including for lifting work. Northern Ireland has the same duty in the Health and Safety at Work (Northern Ireland) Order 1978.

What our learners say

Stories from Lift College learners on our qualifications, in their own words.

“I had been a care assistant for four years without a formal qualification. Lift College made the whole process straightforward, my assessor visited regularly and I completed my Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care in just over a year. I was promoted to senior care worker the month after I qualified.”

“My employer was clear, I needed GCSE English to move into a supervisory role. Lift College helped me find the right exam board and an exam centre five minutes from home. Passed grade 4. Got the promotion.”

“My employer needed me to have Level 2 maths before they could register me on the Level 3 apprenticeship programme. Lift College was fast, the tutor was brilliant, and I resit my maths once after a near-miss and passed the second time. The whole thing took twelve weeks.”

FAQ

Questions about LOLER Training

Is online LOLER training valid?

Your employer decides what training each role needs. LOLER and PUWER expect anyone who plans, supervises or uses lifting equipment to have adequate information, instruction and training, and the Approved Code of Practice L113 expects lifting operations to be planned by a competent person. This course gives the knowledge of the regulations; practical operator training on a specific machine, such as a forklift or crane, and the competence to carry out thorough examinations are separate and your employer decides what else you need.

Who needs LOLER training?

Anyone who owns, controls, plans, supervises or uses lifting equipment at work: site and warehouse managers, supervisors, forklift and crane operators, slingers and signallers, fitters and maintenance staff, plant hire staff, and care and health staff who use hoists to move people. Health and safety representatives who check lifting arrangements also benefit.

How often does lifting equipment need a thorough examination?

Under LOLER, lifting accessories and equipment used to lift people must be thoroughly examined at least every 6 months, and other lifting equipment at least every 12 months, unless a competent person has drawn up a written examination scheme with different intervals. Equipment also needs examination before first use in some cases, after installation or assembly at a new site, and after anything exceptional that could affect its safety, such as damage or a long period out of use.

What does this course not cover?

It does not teach you to operate any particular machine, qualify you as a slinger signaller or appointed person, or make you a competent person for thorough examination. Those need practical training and assessment on site or with the equipment. The course gives you the knowledge of what LOLER requires so you can plan, supervise and check lifting work and know when to call in a specialist.

How do I plan a lifting operation under LOLER?

A competent person assesses the load, the equipment, the route, the ground, the weather and the people involved, chooses equipment and accessories within their safe working load, and writes a lift plan or method statement setting out roles, communication, the exclusion zone and what to do if conditions change. The lift is then supervised by someone with the authority to stop it. The course walks through each step, from a simple routine lift to a lift that needs a detailed plan.

How long do I keep access?

You keep your access for as long as Lift College offers the course, and never less than 3 years from the day you buy. Your certificate PDF is yours to keep.
