About this course

Working at Height Training

You can do working at height training online in the UK with Lift College's Working at Height Training course. It is 1.5 hours of learning in 5 short modules, covering what counts as work at height, why falls kill, the hierarchy of avoid, prevent and minimise, planning and risk assessment, weather and fragile surfaces, choosing and inspecting ladders and stepladders, mobile towers and mobile elevating work platforms, fall arrest and restraint, falling objects and rescue. It costs £19.99, pay once, and your CPD certificate issued by Lift College is ready the same day you pass. Lift College recommends a refresh every 3 years, and the refresher is free.

Falls from height are the single biggest cause of workplace deaths in Great Britain, and most of them are from less than head height: a stepladder, a van roof, a mezzanine edge. The Work at Height Regulations expect every job at height to be planned, supervised and carried out by competent people using the right equipment.

This course covers what the regulations expect of everyone who works at height. You learn what counts as height, how to apply the hierarchy of avoid, prevent and minimise, how to plan a task and read a risk assessment, how to choose, inspect and use ladders, stepladders, towers and platforms, when fall arrest or restraint is needed and what a rescue plan is for. It is written for workplaces across the UK.

By the end you can
  • Explain what counts as work at height and why short falls still kill
  • Apply the hierarchy: avoid work at height, prevent falls, minimise distance and consequences
  • Describe what the regulations expect of employers and of you
  • Plan a task at height, including weather, fragile surfaces and emergencies
  • Choose, inspect and use ladders and stepladders correctly for short duration work
  • Describe the safe use of mobile towers and mobile elevating work platforms
  • Explain when fall arrest or restraint is needed and why rescue must be planned
  • Prevent falling objects and protect people below

FAQ

Questions about Working at Height Training

Is online working at height training valid?

Your employer decides what training you need. This course covers the knowledge the regulations expect of anyone who plans or does work at height. Specific equipment, such as a mobile elevating work platform or a harness, needs practical training on that equipment as well.

How often should working at height training be done?

The regulations do not fix an interval, but competence must be maintained and refreshed when equipment or tasks change. Lift College recommends refreshing every 3 years, sooner for high risk work, and the refresher is free.

Is there a minimum height for work at height?

No. Work at height is any place where a person could fall a distance liable to cause injury, so a stepladder, a loading bay edge or a hole in the floor all count. There is no two metre rule.

Are ladders banned at work?

No. Ladders are allowed for low risk, short duration work, typically under 30 minutes, where a safer option is not reasonably practicable. They must be the right ladder, in good condition, secured and used with three points of contact.

What is the difference between fall arrest and fall restraint?

Restraint stops you reaching a point where you could fall. Arrest catches you after a fall and needs enough clearance and a rescue plan. Restraint is always preferred where it can be used.

How long do I keep access?

You keep your access for as long as Lift College offers the course, and never less than 3 years from the day you buy. Your certificate PDF is yours to keep.

What is the free refresher?

Lift College recommends refreshing this course every 3 years. When your date comes round, you can retake the latest version free and get a new certificate. We email you 30 days before.

Does it count towards my CPD?

Yes. The course is 1.5 hours of learning, shown on your CPD certificate issued by Lift College, so you can log the hours in your CPD record.

Can I get my money back?

Yes. Ask within 14 days of paying and we refund you in full.

Can my employer pay?

Yes. Your receipt shows the course, the date and the amount paid, and you can pass it to your employer. Buying for a team? Ask about team enrolment and the team will help.
