You can do medication awareness training online in the UK with Lift College's Medication Awareness Training course. It is 2 hours of learning in 6 short modules, covering types of medicine and how they are taken, consent and choice, the checks before giving a medicine, recording on a medicines administration record, safe storage and disposal, when required (PRN) medicines, controlled drugs, and how to report and learn from errors. It costs £19.99, pay once, and your CPD certificate issued by Lift College is ready the same day you pass. Lift College recommends a refresh every 12 months, and the refresher is free.

Medicines errors in care are common and can cause serious harm. Care providers must manage medicines properly and safely, and staff who help with medicines need training and must be assessed as competent by their employer before they give them.

This course covers the knowledge every care worker who supports people with medicines needs: types of medicine and how they are taken, consent and choice, the checks before giving a medicine, recording on a medicines administration record, safe storage and disposal, when required (PRN) medicines, controlled drugs, and how to report and learn from errors. It is knowledge training: your employer still assesses your competence in your own setting.

By the end you can
  • Explain the main types of medicine and the routes they are taken by
  • Describe the checks to make before supporting someone with a medicine
  • Record medicines accurately on a medicines administration record (MAR)
  • Store, handle and dispose of medicines safely, including controlled drugs
  • Explain consent, choice and what to do when someone refuses a medicine
  • Use when required (PRN) and homely remedy protocols correctly
  • Recognise, report and learn from medicine errors and near misses

Which online medication awareness certificate do employers accept?

Your employer decides what medicines training you need, based on your role and its medicines policy. In England, regulation 12 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014 requires providers to manage medicines properly and safely and to make sure staff are competent to do so, and NICE guidelines SC1 and NG67 expect care workers who give medicines support to be trained and assessed as competent. A good certificate records the course, hours, completion date and refresh date, and can be verified. The content should cover the levels of medicines support, consent and capacity, the checks before giving a medicine, the MAR chart, storage and controlled drugs, and what to do after an error.

Lift College's certificate does each of these: it names Medication Awareness Training, shows 2 hours of learning, your completion date and a refresh date 12 months on, with a unique number and verification link. The refresher is free.

Is online medication training valid?

Your employer decides what training you need. This course covers the knowledge care workers need about medicines. Before you give medicines, your employer must also check you are competent in your own setting, usually by observing you.

How often should medication training be done?
