CPD guide

You can do medication awareness training online in the UK with Lift College. Medication Awareness Training is 2 hours of learning in 6 short modules, written for care and support workers who help people with their medicines in care homes, supported living and people's own homes, with the law and the NICE guidance explained. It costs £19.99 pay once, gives you a CPD certificate issued by Lift College the same day you pass, and comes with a free refresher every 12 months. Employers and inspectors look for a certificate that records the course, hours, completion date and refresh date, and Lift College's certificate shows each of these.

What employers look for in an online medication awareness certificate

Your employer decides what medicines training you need, based on your role and its medicines policy. In England, regulation 12 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014 requires providers to manage medicines properly and safely and to make sure staff have the competence to do so. NICE guidelines SC1 and NG67 say staff who give medicines support should be trained and assessed as competent. When an employer checks a certificate, they usually look for:

  • Content that follows the current law and guidance. Regulation 12 in England, the Human Medicines Regulations 2012 across the UK, and NICE SC1 for care homes or NG67 for care in the community.
  • A clear, verifiable record. The course name, hours of learning and completion date, with a way to confirm the certificate.
  • The essentials every care worker needs. The levels of medicines support, consent and capacity, the checks before giving a medicine, the MAR chart, storage and controlled drugs, and what to do after an error.
  • A refresh date. NICE expects competence to be reviewed, and most care providers refresh medicines training every year, so a refresh date matters.

Lift College's certificate does each of these. It records Medication Awareness Training, 2 hours of learning, your completion date and a recommended refresh date 12 months on, with a unique certificate number and a verification link. Online awareness training gives you the knowledge. Your employer will also observe you giving medicines and sign off your competence before you do it unsupervised, and the course prepares you for that assessment.

What the Lift College course covers

There are 6 short modules, each with a knowledge check, then a multiple choice final test with an 80% pass mark and unlimited free retakes.

  1. Medicines and how they are taken. Prescription, over the counter and controlled drugs, the forms medicines come in and the routes they are given by, and the levels of support from prompting to giving.
  2. Consent, choice and capacity. The person's right to decide, what to do when someone refuses, and why covert medication needs a best interests decision and advice from the pharmacist.
  3. Before you give a medicine. The checks of right person, medicine, dose, time, route and record, and checking for allergies and recent changes.
  4. Recording. Completing the MAR chart, the codes for a medicine not given, handwritten entries and why gaps are dangerous.
  5. Storage, PRN and controlled drugs. Safe storage and temperatures, when required protocols, homely remedies, controlled drugs storage and recording, and disposal.
  6. When things go wrong. Side effects and reactions, errors and near misses, what to do straight away, reporting and learning from it.

By the end you can describe the levels of medicines support, carry out the checks before giving a medicine, complete a MAR chart correctly, store medicines and controlled drugs safely, and know what to do after an error or a reaction.

The law and guidance it is written around

Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own care regulators and standards, and the Human Medicines Regulations apply across the UK. The safe practice in the course applies wherever you work.

Who it suits

Medication Awareness Training is for care and support workers who help people with their medicines, in a care home, supported living or someone's own home. It is for you if:

  • you support people with their medicines in a care home or in their own home
  • you are new to care and medicines are part of your induction
  • your employer has asked you to refresh your medicines training
  • you are a senior carer who checks MAR charts
  • you support a family member at home and want to understand safe medicines practice

The course does not replace the competency assessment your employer must carry out before you give medicines unsupervised. It gives you the knowledge that assessment tests.

Consent and capacity come up every day in medicines support: see our Mental Capacity Act guide. Many of the people you support live with dementia, covered in our dementia awareness guide, and the hygiene around medicines rounds is in our infection control guide. New to care? Frequently asked questions

Which online medication awareness certificate do UK employers accept?
Your employer decides, based on its medicines policy and, in England, regulation 12 of the 2014 Regulations. Look for a certificate that records the course, hours, completion date and refresh date and can be verified. Lift College's certificate shows all of these, with a unique number and a verification link your employer or inspector can use.
Is online medication training enough to give medicines?
It gives you the knowledge. NICE guidelines SC1 and NG67 say care workers should also be assessed as competent before they give medicines unsupervised, usually by a senior colleague watching you do it. This course covers the checks, the MAR chart, storage and errors, so you go into that assessment prepared and your employer has a record of your training.
How often should medication training be refreshed?
The law does not set a fixed interval. NICE expects competence to be reviewed, and most care providers refresh medicines training every year as part of their mandatory training cycle. Lift College recommends refreshing every 12 months, and the refresher is free. Refresh sooner if your role changes or you move to a service that uses controlled drugs or different systems.
What is the difference between prompting, assisting and administering?
Prompting is reminding someone to take a medicine they manage themselves. Assisting is helping with a step, such as opening a bottle or reading a label, while the person stays in control. Administering is giving the medicine, choosing the dose and time, and recording it. The course explains each level and the records and training each one needs.
What is a MAR chart and why does it matter?
The medication administration record lists each medicine, dose and time, and you sign it when you give the medicine or record a code when you do not. It is the evidence that the person received the right medicine at the right time. Gaps and mistakes on the MAR are among the most common findings in inspections, and the course shows you how to complete it correctly.
Does the course cover controlled drugs?
Yes. It covers what controlled drugs are, how they must be stored and recorded, the register, two person checks where your employer requires them, and disposal. It does not make you a controlled drugs lead, and your employer's policy sets the exact procedure in your service, but you will understand why each step exists and what to do if a count does not match.
Does Lift College's certificate count towards my CPD?
Yes. The course is 2 hours of learning and the certificate records the hours, the completion date and a recommended refresh date 12 months on. It is a CPD certificate issued by Lift College, with a unique number and a verification link. You can log the hours in your CPD record and show the certificate at your supervision or inspection.
