About this course

Modern Slavery Training

You can do modern slavery training online in the UK with Lift College's Modern Slavery Training course. It is 1 hour of learning in 4 short modules, covering what modern slavery is and the forms it takes, the signs that someone is being exploited, the Modern Slavery Act 2015 and what section 54 asks of larger organisations, and how to report a concern safely through your organisation, the Modern Slavery Helpline, the police and the National Referral Mechanism. It costs £19.99, pay once, and your CPD certificate issued by Lift College is ready the same day you pass. Lift College recommends a refresh every 12 months, and the refresher is free.

Modern slavery is not rare and it is not far away. People are held in forced labour on farms, building sites and in food factories, car washes, nail bars, hotels and care settings across the UK. Others are trafficked for sexual exploitation, forced into crime such as drug running and cannabis cultivation, or kept as domestic servants in private homes. In 2024 more than 19,000 potential victims were referred to the National Referral Mechanism, the most since it began in 2009. Victims rarely come forward: their documents are held, they owe a debt they can never repay, they fear the police or deportation, and someone else always speaks for them. The people most likely to notice are colleagues, supervisors, recruiters, buyers and front line staff who know what to look for.

This course covers what every member of staff needs to know. You learn the difference between slavery, servitude, forced labour and human trafficking, the types of exploitation seen in the UK, the physical, behavioural and workplace signs, what the Modern Slavery Act 2015 and the Scottish and Northern Irish Acts require, what a section 54 transparency statement is and who must publish one, how to check recruitment agencies and suppliers, and exactly what to do and who to call if you suspect someone is a victim. It is written for staff and managers in organisations of every size across the UK.

By the end you can
  • Explain what modern slavery is and describe slavery, servitude, forced or compulsory labour and human trafficking
  • Identify the types of exploitation found in the UK, including labour, sexual and criminal exploitation and domestic servitude
  • Recognise the physical, behavioural and workplace signs that a person may be a victim
  • Describe the main offences in the Modern Slavery Act 2015 and the equivalent Scottish and Northern Irish laws
  • Explain what a section 54 transparency in supply chains statement is and which organisations must publish one
  • Apply the checks that reduce the risk of exploitation in recruitment, agency labour and the supply chain
  • Carry out the right steps when you suspect modern slavery, including when to call 999, 101 or the Modern Slavery Helpline on 08000 121 700
  • Describe how the National Referral Mechanism supports victims and who can refer into it

Modern Slavery Act 2015, section 54: transparency in supply chains

Commercial organisations that supply goods or services in the UK and have a total annual turnover of £36 million or more must publish a slavery and human trafficking statement every financial year. The statement sets out the steps taken to make sure slavery and trafficking are not taking place in the business or its supply chains, must be signed off by the board and signed by a director, and must be linked from the organisation's homepage.

Transparency in supply chains: a practical guide (Home Office statutory guidance)

Government guidance on how to meet section 54. It explains who is caught by the duty and what a good statement covers: the organisation's structure and supply chains, its policies, due diligence, risk assessment, effectiveness measures and the training it gives staff on modern slavery.

Human Trafficking and Exploitation (Scotland) Act 2015 and the Human Trafficking and Exploitation (Criminal Justice and Support for Victims) Act (Northern Ireland) 2015

Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own Acts of 2015 that create the equivalent offences of human trafficking, slavery, servitude and forced or compulsory labour and set out support for victims. The section 54 statement duty under the UK Act applies to qualifying organisations wherever in the UK they operate.

National Referral Mechanism: referral and assessment forms

The National Referral Mechanism is the UK framework for identifying and supporting victims of modern slavery. Only designated first responders, such as the police, local authorities, the Home Office and certain charities, can make a referral, and adults must consent. Anyone else reports a concern to the police or the Modern Slavery Helpline on 08000 121 700, who pass it on.

FAQ

Questions about Modern Slavery Training

Is online modern slavery training valid?

Yes. There is no law that sets a format for modern slavery training. Section 54 statements are expected to describe the training an organisation gives its staff, and public bodies, customers and auditors increasingly ask suppliers for proof of it. Your employer decides what training each role needs; this course gives the awareness every member of staff should have and a certificate for your records.

Who needs modern slavery training?

Every member of staff benefits, because victims are most often noticed by the people who work next to them or serve them. It matters most for managers and supervisors of agency or migrant workers, HR and recruitment, procurement and supply chain staff, and front line public sector workers in housing, health, social care and enforcement. Organisations that publish a section 54 statement usually train all staff and report on it.

How often should modern slavery training be done?

The law does not fix an interval. Organisations that publish a section 54 statement report each year on the training they have given, so most refresh annually and train new starters at induction. Lift College recommends refreshing every 12 months, and the refresher is free.

What does this course not cover?

It does not write your organisation's section 54 statement, supplier audit programme or safeguarding policy, and it does not make you a first responder for the National Referral Mechanism. It gives staff and managers the knowledge to recognise modern slavery and report it safely. Your organisation decides what further training procurement, HR or safeguarding leads need.

How do I report suspected modern slavery?

If someone is in immediate danger call 999. Otherwise call the police on 101 or the Modern Slavery Helpline on 08000 121 700, which is open 24 hours a day and lets you report anonymously, and tell your manager or safeguarding lead following your organisation's procedure. Do not confront the suspected exploiter and do not question the person in front of others, because that can put them at greater risk. Write down what you saw, where and when, and any vehicle or address details.

How long do I keep access?

You keep your access for as long as Lift College offers the course, and never less than 3 years from the day you buy. Your certificate PDF is yours to keep.

What is the free refresher?

Lift College recommends refreshing this course every 12 months. When your date comes round, you can retake the latest version free and get a new certificate. We email you 30 days before.

Does it count towards my CPD?

Can I get my money back?

Yes. Ask within 14 days of paying and we refund you in full.

Can my employer pay?

Yes. Your receipt shows the course, the date and the amount paid, and you can pass it to your employer. Buying for a team? Open a free organisation account: every course is £16.99, and you can pay by card or invoice with your PO.

Can my team do this course in another language?

Yes, on an organisation account with 10 or more places. Your team can study Modern Slavery Training in Polish, Romanian, Punjabi, Urdu or Welsh, prepared within 1 working day of your order. The final test and the certificate stay in the English course name, so the certificate is the one every employer recognises. Tell us the languages you need when you order or ask for a quote.
