Questions about Equality and Diversity Training
What are the nine protected characteristics?
Age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation. They are set out in section 4 of the Equality Act 2010.
What is the difference between direct and indirect discrimination?
Direct discrimination is treating someone less favourably because of a protected characteristic. Indirect discrimination is when a rule applies to everyone but puts people with a protected characteristic at a disadvantage.
What is a reasonable adjustment?
A change an employer makes to remove or reduce a disadvantage linked to someone's disability. Examples include flexible hours, specialist equipment or documents in another format. The employer pays, not the disabled person.
Does the Equality Act 2010 apply in Northern Ireland?
Mostly no. The Act covers England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland has its own equality laws. This course is written around the Equality Act 2010.
Why should my employer care what I do?
