GCSE maths and English can be retaken in the November and summer examination series. Online study allows you to prepare at your own pace before sitting exams at an approved centre. Grade 4 (a standard pass) is the benchmark required for most employment and further study pathways.
GCSE maths and English retakes are sat as a private candidate at an Ofqual-approved exam centre. AQA, Edexcel and OCR all run November and summer series, with summer being the main intake.
Once these are booked, the rest is study time.

A grade 4 (standard pass) or above in GCSE English Language and GCSE maths is a requirement for a wide range of employment, vocational qualifications, and further education pathways in the UK. Many employers list GCSE maths and English as minimum entry criteria, and universities generally require both for degree entry regardless of other qualifications held.
If you did not achieve grade 4 when you first sat your GCSEs, or if you sat them many years ago and want to upgrade your grade, a GCSE retake provides the opportunity to obtain the qualification that meets current standards.
GCSE maths and English Language are the only GCSE subjects available in both the November and summer examination series. According to JCQ and AQA exam administration information, the November series for GCSE maths and English Language typically takes place in the first two weeks of November. The summer series runs in May and June.
All other GCSE subjects are available in the summer series only. If you want to retake a science, history, geography, or language GCSE, you will need to plan for a summer sitting.
The main exam boards offering GCSE maths and English Language in England are:
For private candidates and distance learners, AQA and Pearson Edexcel are the most accessible options. Your online study provider should confirm which awarding body specification your course follows.
For adults aged 19 and over without a grade 4 in GCSE English or maths, the cheapest route is free: the Adult Skills Fund covers full tuition and exam entry at any approved further-education provider. There is no cap on age or attempts, but you can only fund one attempt at each subject per funding year. This is the cheapest option in every case where you qualify.
If you do not qualify (already hold a grade 4, live outside England, or need to sit faster than the college's next intake) the cheapest paid route is usually a fully online GCSE with tuition and past-paper support at around £395 per subject, with private-candidate exam fees of £150 to £300 added on top. That is £545 to £695 all in per subject. Some providers list a headline course fee under £250 but do not include tutor support, so budget the full figure before booking.
If a grade 4 equivalent is acceptable (most vocational courses and NHS entry roles accept it), Functional Skills Level 2 in English or maths is the cheapest paid option: around £199 per subject including on-demand exam entry, no separate private-candidate fee, and results in 10 to 15 working days. It is not accepted for A-Levels, most nursing degrees, or teacher-training routes, so check the specific course requirement before choosing this route.
Cheapest first: check Adult Skills Fund eligibility on the National Careers Service website. If eligible, go free through a local college. If not, choose Functional Skills where accepted; choose an online GCSE only where the specific end-course or employer requires the GCSE badge.
Online GCSE courses give you access to course materials, practice assessments, and tutor support through a virtual learning environment. This is particularly useful for adult learners who are working or have family commitments and cannot attend classes in person.
A typical online GCSE programme includes:
Study time required varies depending on your existing knowledge. Learners starting with limited prior knowledge of the subject should allow at least six months of consistent study. Those with a partial foundation may be ready in a shorter period.
As a distance learner, you will need to register with an approved examination centre to sit your GCSE papers. Many colleges, independent schools, and specialist exam centres accept private candidates. Fees vary by centre and subject, and entry deadlines apply, typically several weeks before the examination window opens.
Once you have a confirmed grade 4 or above in GCSE maths and English Language, you open access to a wide range of vocational qualifications at Level 2 and Level 3, including the Access to HE Diploma, as well as employment pathways that list GCSE qualifications as a minimum requirement.
