How do GCSE courses work for adults in the UK?

How the course itself works

Online adult GCSE courses cover the same specification as a school GCSE, taught in structured modules with reading, video lessons, practice questions and tutor-marked assignments. You are not part of a class or a fixed cohort. You log in when it suits you, work through the material in order, and submit assignments as you go. Your tutor gives written feedback on each one and is available for questions throughout your enrolment.

How you sit the exam (private candidate)

Adults studying online sit their GCSEs as private candidates. You are entered at an approved exam centre and sit the same papers as school pupils on the national exam dates. On Lift College's +Exams plan we enter you and book your seat at one of 10 Tutors & Exams centres approved for GCSEs (Birmingham, Bolton, Coventry, Doncaster, High Wycombe, Mitcham, Newcastle, Romford, St Neots and Taunton), with exam entry and centre fees included. GCSEs are timetabled every summer (results in August). For GCSE Maths and English Language only, there is an additional November resit series (results in mid-January).

Not every school takes private candidates. The reliable options are fee-paying schools, independent tuition centres and dedicated private exam centres, and availability varies by region and by subject. If you book a centre yourself, do it early: entries usually close in February for the summer series and in early October for the November series, and you cannot sit exams retrospectively. How long the whole route takes

At Lift College most learners spend 6 to 12 hours a week and finish in 12 to 18 months per subject (Combined Science: 8 to 12 hours a week over 12 to 24 months), faster if you can put in more time or already have prior knowledge. The bigger factor is exam timing. If you enrol in September you can realistically target the following summer sitting. If you need GCSE Maths or English Language quickly for work or a course application, the November series, open to candidates aged 16 or over at the start of the academic year, is often the fastest route: enrol in the spring, be ready by mid-October and receive results in mid-January.

How you pay for it

Monthly +Exams has a 9-month expected term because exam fees are built in: you can cancel any time with no exit fee, but unused exam credit is forfeited. GCSE Maths and English are free at your local FE college through the government-funded English and Maths entitlement if you are 19 or over and do not already hold a grade 4 (or old grade C). That route is classroom-based and follows a fixed college timetable. Online adult courses are a paid alternative for people who need to study around a job, cannot commit to a fixed timetable, or want a faster route to the November resit series.
