Studying A Level Mathematics online as an adult

Yes. Adults of any age can study AQA 7357 online with Lift College and sit the same papers as school candidates (three 2-hour papers of 100 marks each, equally weighted, calculator allowed throughout), as a private candidate at a Tutors & Exams centre. The course is open to anyone aged 14 or over (under 18s enrol with a parent or guardian's permission and support) and there are no formal entry qualifications. The recommended starting point is GCSE Mathematics at grade 6 or above, or a confident working knowledge of GCSE algebra; this is recommended, not required. Most learners spend 8 to 12 hours a week and finish in 12 to 18 months, or faster if they study more each week. On +Exams we enter you before AQA's deadline and book your seat at one of ten Tutors & Exams centres in England; exam entry is only on +Exams. About this A Level

What is A Level Mathematics?

A Level Mathematics is a Level 3 qualification in the study of pure mathematics, mechanics and statistics, usually studied over two years at school or college. On AQA 7357 you sit three papers of 2 hours, each worth 100 marks, with a calculator allowed in all three. Grades run from A* to E, worth 56 to 16 UCAS tariff points. Lift College teaches the full AQA 7357 course online from £49.99 a month when you pay today, save up to 17% for life, with a named UK tutor, or you can try it free for 7 days first.

Learners take A Level Mathematics for degrees such as engineering, computing, economics, medicine or a science, or for a degree apprenticeship that asks for it, and adults take it to resit, change career or apply to university.

Is A Level Mathematics hard?

In summer 2026, 42.5% of the 115,380 UK entries in A Level Mathematics were graded A* or A, and 96.4% achieved A* to E, against 28.5% and 97.5% across all A Levels (JCQ, published 13 August 2026). The pure content builds on itself, and Papers 2 and 3 can test anything from Paper 1 alongside mechanics or statistics, so gaps need closing early.

Who this is for

This course is for you if

  • You need A Level Mathematics for engineering, computing, economics, medicine or a science degree, or a degree apprenticeship that asks for it.
  • You are resitting or returning to study and want the same A Level, from the same awarding body, that is sat in UK schools and colleges, with UCAS points on results day.
  • You are a strong GCSE mathematician who wants to keep going with pure maths, mechanics and statistics at your own pace.
  • You are an adult returning to study who wants a recognised A Level at your own pace, with a tutor who marks your work and a clear route to the exam.
What you will need

Entry requirements

  • Open to anyone aged 14 or over. Under 18s enrol with a parent or guardian's permission and support. There are no formal entry qualifications.
  • Recommended starting point: GCSE Mathematics at grade 6 or above, or a confident working knowledge of GCSE algebra. This is recommended, not required, and the first unit revises the algebra the course builds on.
  • A computer, tablet or phone with internet access, a scientific or graphical calculator with statistical functions (allowed in all three papers), a ruler, pencil and squared paper.
  • The ability to attend a Tutors & Exams centre in England for your written papers.

There is no minimum study time. Most learners spend 8 to 12 hours a week and finish in 12 to 18 months, or faster if you study more each week. Assignments are for feedback and do not count towards your grade; the qualification is 100% examined.

What you'll study

Every topic in the AQA 7357 specification, in one course

The AQA 7357 specification has 19 lettered content areas: pure mathematics (A to J), statistics (K to O) and mechanics (P to S), plus the overarching themes and the large data set used in statistics. Taking a second maths A Level alongside it? Read Further Maths: how it works. Open each topic to see what it covers.

Three equally weighted papers, 2 hours and 100 marks each

1Pure mathematics: proof, algebra and functions
Sections A to C · all three papers
  • A: Proof, including proof by deduction, exhaustion and contradiction
  • B: Algebra and functions, indices, surds, quadratics, polynomials, partial fractions and transformations
  • C: Coordinate geometry in the (x, y) plane, straight lines, circles and parametric equations
2Pure mathematics: sequences, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms
Sections D to F · all three papers
  • D: Sequences and series, binomial expansion, arithmetic and geometric sequences
  • E: Trigonometry, radians, identities, reciprocal and inverse functions
  • F: Exponentials and logarithms, modelling growth and decay
3Pure mathematics: calculus, numerical methods and vectors
Sections G to I · all three papers; J (Vectors) · Paper 2
  • G: Differentiation, including the chain, product and quotient rules and implicit differentiation
  • H: Integration, including by substitution, by parts and differential equations
  • I: Numerical methods, including the Newton-Raphson method and the trapezium rule
  • J: Vectors in two and three dimensions
4Statistics
Sections K to O · Paper 3
  • K: Statistical sampling
  • L: Data presentation and interpretation, using the large data set
  • M: Probability, including conditional probability
  • N: Statistical distributions, binomial and normal
  • O: Statistical hypothesis testing
5Mechanics
Sections P to S · Paper 2
  • P: Quantities and units in mechanics
  • Q: Kinematics, including calculus and projectiles
  • R: Forces and Newton's laws, including friction
  • S: Moments
Step 1Build the pure maths first

Pure mathematics is two thirds of the marks and underpins mechanics and statistics, so the course front-loads algebra, trigonometry and calculus.

Step 2Practise under exam conditions

Every unit ends with marked, exam style questions. Before entry you sit full timed mock papers with written feedback returned within 5 to 7 working days.

Step 3Sit all three papers in one series

On +Exams your entry and your seat at a Tutors & Exams centre are booked for you and the fees are included.

Are these A levels accepted by UK universities?

Yes. Our A Levels are awarded by AQA (WJEC Eduqas for Film Studies) and are identical to those taught in UK schools and colleges. UK universities assess the grade and subject on your certificate, not where you studied, and the grades earn the same UCAS points (up to 56 per A Level at A*). Check the entry requirements of the course you want.

How long does an A level take?

You typically study one A level in 12 to 18 months. Many learners take two or three A levels alongside each other across two years to apply for university the following autumn.

Is there a non calculator paper in A Level Maths?

No. On AQA 7357 a calculator is allowed in all three papers, each 2 hours and worth 100 marks, so there is no non calculator paper.
