Yes. Adults of any age can study AQA GCSE Mathematics 8300 online with Lift College and sit the same three papers as school candidates, as a private candidate at a Tutors & Exams centre. There are no formal entry qualifications and no upper age limit. Maths is one of only two GCSEs with a November series as well as May/June. November is open to candidates aged 16 or over at the start of the academic year, so adults get two chances a year to sit. You choose Foundation or Higher tier with your tutor once your mock results show where you are, then sit all three papers in the same series. Most adults study 6 to 12 hours a week and finish in 12 to 18 months, or sooner if they can give more time. On +Exams we enter you before the AQA deadline and book your seat; exam entry is only on +Exams. Our guide on sitting GCSEs as a private candidate explains the process.

Is GCSE Mathematics the same as the school version?
Yes, exactly the same. Our GCSE Mathematics is awarded by AQA under specification 8300 and uses the identical grading and exam papers as the GCSE taken in UK schools. It is regulated by Ofqual, qualification number 601/4608/4.
How old do I need to be?
Open to anyone aged 14 or over. Under 18s enrol with a parent or guardian's permission and support. There are no formal entry qualifications.
Should I sit Foundation or Higher tier for GCSE Maths?
Foundation tier is graded 1 to 5 and covers the core content. Higher tier is graded 4 to 9, with a safety-net grade 3 for candidates who just miss a 4, and includes harder topics on top of the Foundation content. Ofqual guidance is that a learner expecting grade 4 or 5 should sit Foundation, and a grade 4 or 5 on Foundation is worth exactly the same as a grade 4 or 5 on Higher. Your Lift College tutor will help you pick your tier before we book you in for exams.
How many exam papers are there, and are they calculator or non-calculator?
GCSE Maths (AQA 8300) is assessed by three equally weighted written papers, each 1 hour 30 minutes and out of 80 marks (240 marks in total). Paper 1 is non-calculator. Paper 2 and Paper 3 are calculator papers. You must sit all three papers in the same series and at the same tier.
When can I sit the GCSE Mathematics exams?
AQA GCSE Mathematics 8300 is examined in May/June each year, with a second full series in November open to candidates aged 16 or over at the start of the academic year. All three papers are sat in the same series and at the same tier. On +Exams we enter you and book your seat at a Tutors & Exams centre for the series you are ready for.
Where will I sit the exams?
At one of the ten Tutors & Exams centres across England: Birmingham, Bolton, Coventry, Doncaster, High Wycombe, Mitcham, Newcastle, Romford, St Neots and Taunton. Use the centre finder on this page to see your nearest. Exams are always sat in person at an approved centre; GCSE Mathematics cannot be sat online.
How does paying work?
You pay monthly by subscription, or annually up front at the price shown in the plan card. You can pay today and save up to 17% on every payment, with your price fixed for life, or start with a 7-day free trial and pay nothing until day 8. On +Exams the AQA entry fee and the Tutors & Exams centre fee are included in the price.
What does the Study option include?
The full course, your named UK tutor, marked practice in every unit, mock papers and AI Study Support.
What if I stop paying?
You simply stop studying. There is no contract, no credit agreement and no debt. You can cancel from your account at any time and there is 14-day money back on every payment.
Can I resit GCSE Maths as an adult or private candidate?
Yes. Adults sit GCSE Maths every year as private candidates, either as a first attempt or as a resit. You do not need to be attached to a school or college. With Lift College, you study AQA 8300 fully online and we help you book a seat as a private candidate at one of our 10 approved exam centres. The main June series runs each May and June, and a November resit series is available for GCSE Maths and English Language.
Which online GCSE Maths course should I choose to resit as an adult?
Lift College's GCSE Mathematics suits adults resitting: it is AQA 8300, with a named UK tutor and marked practice back in 5 to 7 working days, and on +Exams Lift College enters you and books your seat at a Tutors & Exams centre. Whichever course you choose, check it teaches the specification you will sit. GCSE Maths also has a November series, open to candidates aged 16 or over at the start of the academic year, so adults can sit twice a year. Study, without exam entry, is £39.99 a month when you pay today.
What percentage do I need for a grade 4 or grade 5 in GCSE Maths?
Boundaries move slightly each year, but AQA's published grade boundaries for the June 2026 series (out of 240 marks in total) are a useful guide. On Higher tier, grade 4 needed 63 marks (roughly 26%) and grade 5 needed 97 marks (roughly 40%). On Foundation tier, grade 4 needed 154 marks (roughly 64%) and grade 5 needed 187 marks (roughly 78%). Higher tier assesses harder material, so a lower share of the total marks earns the same grade.
Do I need GCSE Maths for nursing, teaching or university?
In most cases yes. Nursing and midwifery degrees typically require GCSE Maths at grade 4 (grade C) or above alongside English and often a science. Primary and secondary teacher training in England requires GCSE Maths, English and (for primary) a science at grade 4 or above. Universities routinely list GCSE Maths at grade 4 as a standard entry requirement across many subjects. Always check the exact grade and any tier requirements on the course page you are applying to.
Can you go to university without maths GCSE?
Sometimes, but most courses ask for it. Universities routinely list GCSE Maths at grade 4 as a standard entry requirement, and nursing, midwifery and teacher training require it. Some courses accept an equivalent such as Functional Skills Maths Level 2, so check yours. Lift College teaches AQA GCSE Mathematics 8300 online from £39.99 a month when you pay today.
Are there GCSE maths and English courses online?
Yes. Lift College runs GCSE maths and English courses online: GCSE Mathematics (AQA 8300) and GCSE English Language (AQA 8700), each £359.99 a year or £39.99 a month when you pay today, with a named UK tutor. Taking 2 courses together gives 5% off. Both have a November exam series as well as May and June.
Can you do GCSE Maths online at home?
Yes. Lift College delivers AQA 8300 GCSE Mathematics fully online from home.
